Just a quick update. Yesterday we queued for a couple of hours to get tickets to the Petronas Towers trip and skybridge. It's a bit nuts and really noisy. I took a book and lots of people take cameras. I don't see the point in taking photos of tourists queueing. We get tickets for the last tour of the day at 6.30pm and head back to the hotel for breakfast. We then venture to Bukit Bitang. It's more shopping, more malls, more insanity. We get lost and in a good way find the Pavillion. Yet another huge mall with gigantic food court and shops, shops and more shops. We find a skybridge link back to the convention centre and our hotel, so that's another easy way to get around and have a rest before heading out ... read more
Right, now we've got the internet working a quick update. The A380 is fabulous and I only ever want to fly on Singapore Airlines. Huge seats, fantastic service and brilliant entertainment system. We did however nearly miss our flight to KL and got the golf cart treatment over to our connecting flight, shame the luggage didn't make it. We arrive at KL, no luggage but we know it's coming. Our taxi pick up isn't here. We enquire but are told that it's not coming to pick us up, we can get a taxi though, it's over 100km and will cost 250 malaysian ringits, that's about £45. We decide to get the rapid train and then the monorail. Two hours and lost of sweating later we arrive at our hotel. The concierge informs me that he told ... read more
These are the mornings I look forward to least on Holiday. Up at 5.30am to get ready for a trip up to "Flight of the Gibbon" essentially a treetop trek with zip lines through the tree canopies with some rope bridges and abseiling thrown in. Our pickup is bang on time which means no Brekkie for us so we are glad that we have snaffled the fruit bowl from our room and got an ice cold bottle of water and some cans of iced coffee for the 55km trip. We arrive sometime after 9am having had to endure the Chiang Mai rush hour and then some of the nastiest hairpin bends we have ever seen. Our driver beeps his horn at every one which is actually quite reassuring as the Thais do seem to have a ... read more
We get up late and head down for breakfast, it's already hot and we planned for a walk this morning. We head off for a walk around the moat and I get lost looking for a particular street. We're accosted by several friendly locals, offering trips to assorted factories! We deciline and finally find ourselves back at Tha Pae Gate. We stop for coffee and then more walkies. I've taken to using an umbrella for shade, shame it's black and sparkly. Kev has been talking about booking a trip to Chiang Rai and the Goldern Triangle, so we pick one of many tour companies and book ourselves in for Thursday. We retire back to the hotel when it gets too hot to walk anymore and prepare for the 'walking street' market that happens every Sunday night. ... read more
Gonna cover 7th & 8th in one hit. We are heading to Chaing Mai this evening on the overnight train so today is mainly spent scoping out the local area around our Hotel in Bangkok for our return next week. This translates to Scarlet wanting to visit all the shops and shopping centres within a 5 miles radius to make sure she wont miss anything. The morning in Bangkok is hot already at 8am is is steadily getting hotter. A threat of rain in the air never materialises All in all fairly ineventful day as we make our way to the railway station in readiness for our trip Northwards. We arrive ridiculously early and end up waiting 2 hours for our train. We eagerly head toward our First Class cabin looking forward to the luxuries you ... read more
I cannot believe no one has ever used that as a title to their blog........! We arrive in Thailand Suvarnabhumi airport just after 9pm, having been delayed in Bahrain for over 3 hours. This somewhat puts a spanner in the works for our first evening, bearing in mind we have now been travelling for well over 18 hours surviving on the luxuries of aircraft food. We are both holding out well and things are looking up, we disembark, get through immigration, through customs and are looking for a cab within 45 minutes! We hail a metered cab, having done the Limo before (1000 bhat) knowing that a normal Cab has got to be cheaper..... OK, so our driver speaks No English (why should he?) and our combined Thai language skills amount to saying Hello, Thank you, ... read more
I thought today would be our huge shopping day, but after trawling a couple of Malls, Wal-Mart and the biggest Cowboy Boot Store I've ever seen I leave disappointed. Vegas has changed quite a bit since we were last here and it's not the shopping Mecca it once was. I'm actually looking forward to leaving Vegas tomorrow and heading back to LA, never thought I'd say that. I'm not sure when we'll be back and there's nothing for me to miss. Vegas has become a very expensive stop over and I feel like I'm being squeezed for every dollar. Tipping 18% is considered normal and anything less is frowned upon, this isn't just restaurants it's bars, donut stores, everything. Time to pack now, I'll update tomorrow in LA. Oh I nearly forgot, here are some ... read more
We get up late at 9.30 as we're not driving anywhere today. There are craps lessons in the casino at 11 and we plan to make the most of them. Craps is probably the only game we've not played as we don't understand it but, hopefully after our lesson today we'll at least be able to play, if not win. The Pit Boss, Jimmy is a quick talker. He explains the rules, there are many and then the odds, also many. The Craps table is full of numbers, dice, chips, etc and it's all very confusing. Having watched it lots I still don't think I understand it completely. After an hour of explantion we wander over to a table where a guy who resembles a young Val Kilmer seems to be doing quite well. After watching ... read more
We plan to have a rest today. No driving, no maps, no McDonalds/Burger King/Wendy's (and we complain about motorway service stations!). After checking out the local cinema and planning to see Grindhouse we take a walk along the strip to kill time. We're approached by a guy who want's to give us a 'free gift'. At this point alarm bells should be ringing, but we stupidly follow him off the strip and into an office, he passes us onto another guy who chats a bit and then launches into his timeshare speech. We try to duck out but he's having none of it and I feel quite intimidated so we sign up for a tour later this afternoon and hand over a $40 refundable deposit. As we walk away Kev is obviously distracted and pissed off. ... read more
Ok, it's been a couple of days, but we needed the rest from all the driving. We left you in Reno for our drive to Vegas. The weather changed miraculously as we left Reno, it went from being wet and cloudy to a horrific storm just outside Tonopah (another weird town!) and then to fabulous blue skies and sunshine as we approached Vegas. We took a diversion onto the Extraterrestrial Highway and stopped for photos at Rachel in NV. Apparently there have been the most UFO sightings here, although I suspect that it's actually aircraft that the US Airforce have in development at the nearby Nellis Base. There doesn't look like there's much around Rachel and it's surrounding areas, but if you look really carefully there are huge bunkers everywhere and lots of rail road ... read more
