Well.... how on earth do I describe San Francisco?...amazing, unique, cosmopolitan, vibrant... there are not enough words to describe Ben and I's favourite city so far! I actually drew the short straw with it being my turn to do the San Fran blog as there is just so much to write about. As soon as we arrived in San Francisco (despite being bleary eyed having just endured an 18 hour overnight train journey!) we loved the place. There is an exciting buzz about San Fran which is difficult to describe. As a result, we dumped our bags in the hotel and despite being shattered, threw ourselves onto the streets of San Fran for an explore. The great thing about the city is that you can walk pretty much everywhere which is always our preference. We did ... read more

Day 2 in San Fran started once again by getting on a cable car to a little farmers market on Fisherman's wharf. A inexpensive way to eat breakfast and the food was high quality. There was a very good variety and there was something for everyone. I had fried potatoes, scrambled eggs and green beans which were very flavoursome. It was a typical market and many stalls sold homemade goods. We then walked up to the Cable Car museum. Inside the building were the wires and mechanisms which controlled the cable cars throughout the city. A small museum but it told the history of the cable cars and also of the city. Very interesting and a nice way to spend an hour or so. We then made our way back down to Fisherman's wharf and ate at ... read more

There were two san Francisco half marathon the first one that was full took you over the bridge so Philip has decided today to walk that route so he will have cover all 26.2 miles in two days and seen a large part of the city without sitting on open top bus maybe this could be our new career running tours of cities taking people on guided runs oh to dream. We deviate slightly from the route to walk along the stunning coastal walk in the golden gate prom past lands end and along the beach which involves some pretty daunting coastal steps not what you need the day after a run. But the views of the bay are stunning and its pretty quiet up here as everyone is no doubt at Fisherman’s wharf buying tacky ... read more

Liam's request first today: The Aquarium On The Bay. We caught the line 47 bus from two blocks up from the Phoenix and found our way to Pier 39. At 10am there weren't many people around. We went straight in to see the nice collection of fish, jellyfish, sharks etc in tanks and two walking tunnels. They specialised in local fish so not much of corals and tropicals, but lots of sea anemones with other fish. I'd say compared to AQWA they had the same range but different types, and AQWA has larger sharks and rays. We exited to find Pier 39 filling up with people. We collected tickets for the 12:15 on the Blue and Yellow Fleet 1 hour bay cruise., then with an hour to kill went back to Pier 39. Its loaded with ... read more

So I had to head back to Vancouver from Seattle to catch my flight onwards to San Francisco. I was surprised because the bus from Seattle was packed. Then i realised its because today is the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. The bus over the border took quite a bit longer but the real problem lied in getting into the city. Loads of streets were closed off and full of pedestrians with their Canadian flags out. I managed to find my hostel just round the corner from the BC Stadium and I got in contact with a girl called Brittany who is the best friend of my Canadian friend from Liverpool, Tiffany. She was really lovely and took me to a bar with her friends where we watched the opening ceremony on TV. Naturally there ... read more

After breakfast we walked to pier 33 ready fro the ferry to 'THE ROCK'(Alcatraz, Devil's Island). Sun was shinning again, not so much to miss about Pontnewydd when the weather is so fine!! The ferry journey was great and the views were even better, we had a good look of The Golden Gate, and approach to Alcatraz was chilling. Once docked we had a briefing, then set off. First port was a projection show, then the tour of the Prison, with a personal headset the tour was really detailed and a laugh, saw where all the bad guys (Al Capone, Robert "Birdman" Stroud) did all sorts of bad stuff; trying to get into character!! After the tour we saw a guy called Darwin Coon, he was an inmate on Alcatraz, old now but still looked a ... read more

Day 2 and rearing to go, we set out for Embarcadero, the coast where we could buy our tickets for Alcatraz. It was a really nice walk in the sun and head through China Town which had loads of cool buildings, shops, markets, and food!! Along the way we came across a place called Vital Tea Leaf, a Tea store with free Tea testing, the man at the Tea counter said on our appearance to the door, "sit down and drink my Tea or Uncle with beat you", so we sat down!! We sampled loads of random Tea's which Uncle tried saying was actually "rat shit", and if we did not drink it "he would feed us to his dog downstairs who has not been fed for 2 day". He was so funny!! We continued through ... read more

Our first day we took it easy and planned our next leg- VEGAS BABY!! Early afternoon we head out to the local shops, then went to a deli and bought a Ib of fresh King Prawns for 7 buck's, bargain!! Bought some other bits and bobs and head back to fry up some nice tea. Later that night we went fishing for a watering hole and came across a place called, 'Lefty O'Douls', we sat at the bar with some cold one's, had some banter with the bar man, then listened to some jazz piano, we requested ' Joker', and really enjoyed the night, this was really what we had been searching for since day 1!!... read more

After a hour long bus to DC airport, followed by a 5 1/2 hour flight we finally arrived in San Francisco. We took the bart subway to central and began our late night hostel hunt(Globetrotters Inn)! Ellis street was our destination and on proximity came across a ghetto, heading to the heart we realised we had gone to far and were not actually staying in this hell, what a relief. Found out that all the homeless hang out about 3 blocks away ready for the early morning soup kitchens!! After checking in we went to a local Diner 'Lori's', where we had chilli cheese hotdogs, fries, and ice cold Bud's!!... read more
