A few words about California is a strange way to begin a blog about a trip to the Canadian maritime provinces and New England. But Joe and I have decided that our late summer adventure starts here at the Pacific Ocean and if all goes as planned will take us to the Atlantic. We are taking a few days to repack in Prescott. We were in San Diego staying at Joe's mom's little beach house for ten days. The days here follow a pleasant pattern. Joe takes long bike rides in the morning and boogie boards in the afternoon. I take walks in the morning and sometimes I bike with Joe. My afternoons are spent reading on the beach or exploring the nearby shops. In the evenings we walk to a restaurant to eat seafood or ... read more

December 6 My last full day in San Diego I started with a ride on the Old Town Trolley Tour, with stops in the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, San Diego harbor , seaport village , the convention center, Horton Plaza shopping center, Gas Lamp Quarter, bayfront, Coronado ferry landing, Balboa park and the San Diego Zoo, and Little Italy. It was a good way to see the area and provided me with incentive to take the ferry to Coronado . I got off in Coronado and had lunch there. The view across the bay to the city of San Diego is beautiful . I went back to the hotel and had dinner there.... read more

December 7 My flight was early, leaving at 7:20 AM. With the time zone change, I got back to Tampa at 6:00 PM after transferring in Detroit. The flights were uneventful and all on time. I got my car which I had left in the long-term parking. It only took me an hour to get from the airport to home . It was a very good, but short, trip.... read more

December 5 Another great day but a little cloudy . The hotel had a shuttle for patrons of the hotel to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo . The Zoo is located in Balboa Park. It is very large and is home to several different museums and attractions. I didn’t have time to take advantage of all the opportunities but I did get to the Zoo. The 100 acre zoo is home to more than 4,500 animals including giant pandas river hippos and gorillas. I started with a 35 minute guided double decker bus tour. The 3 mile ride took us through the zoo grounds. Then I was better able to select the areas I wanted to spend more time in. I had lunch at the fine dining restaurant in the zoo , a restaurant ... read more

December 4 When I woke up I saw the beauty of my location. The name of the hotel, Holiday Inn on the Bay, was very accurate. Across the street was a cruise ship pier, the Maritime Museum, the USS Midway Museum, the Coronado ferry, dinner cruise boats and the beautiful views! It was a beautiful day. I had breakfast in the hotel restaurant. After breakfast, I walked outside and went to the Maritime Museum just across the street. The Star of India was the featured ship at the museum but there were many interesting ships on display. The Star of India, which is one of the oldest active sailing ships in the world, was my favorite, the Berkeley, a historic steam ferry, the Medea, a steam yacht, a Soviet submarine, the USS Dolphin, another submarine, and ... read more

December 3 I hadn’t been to San Diego since 1975. It was one of my favorite cities because of its natural beauty and friendly people. I love cities on the water with lots of things to do. Would a visit 37 years later leave me with the same feeling ? I left Tampa in the afternoon and transferred in Atlanta for a direct flight to San Diego. I didn’t get in the hotel until 1030 PM after I took the super shuttle to my hotel, the Holiday Inn on the Bay . I found out later that my hotel had a complimentary shuttle to the Airport. Next time I’ll check before buying the shuttle. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel restaurant was a pub. The Elephant & Castle. I had a couple of ... read more

All that fresh air must have had some weird homeopathic affect on our AC Unit because the minute we departed Yosemite National Park it all but lost its mojo. Even though we would be selling the car within a month, we only seriously pondered the option of living without AC for about five minutes before we were once again beholden to civilizations accesses and had it repaired; meaning we were able to retain the essence of Yosemite’s breeze whilst charging though the scorching heat of southern California. Jennifer took it to a mechanic in Merced who topped it up with Freon™, which for those of you who aren’t in the business, or nerdy enough to have researched it, is the long time brand name of something called chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). Meanwhile, whilst this flagrant act of wanton ... read more
