Vacay is going great. Mostly. I thought Ed was going to get into a fist fight in the movie theatre. The show is about to start and some guy is talking. The guy really thinks he is cool. His jokes are lame, the people with him laugh. He’s a loud talker, center of attention. The show starts and is showing credits and he is still talking. I just know this isn’t going to go well. I figure they will stop talking once the movie has dialogue. Ed doesn’t like to wait. So he turns to them and says, really loud, Hey, could you shut up? Sigh. They make some comments back, that fortunately Ed can’t hear. It does get really quiet in the theatre. About ¾ of the way thru the movie the guy starts snoring. ... read more

Time to head back to PS. This has been the never ending winter. April 11th, still snowing. But it isn’t time for my holiday to start yet. Ed however, is going a week before me, to golf. I cannot for the life of me remember why I would have agreed to this???? So he gets an extra week in the sun and I stay home and work. And shovel. Not once or twice, pretty much every day I am shovelling. I must have been delirious in February when we booked this trip and agreed to come a week behind, so that he could golf? A few days before I leave my driveway is so full of snow that I can’t get my car out. And there is another big storm coming, so I decide to leave ... read more

Here we are at Rancho Las Palmas Resort. We have been here for a couple of days. Palm Springs is beautiful and the weather has been very comfortable, although a little chilly in the evenings. We are here with a group, and when I called to make the reservation I asked about getting an upgraded room, but the reservation specialist assured me all rooms in this resort were the same. Now that we have arrived I find that is not the case. So as much as I like to pay the upgrade and get a nicer room, apparently this hotel isn't big on that type of thing. Regarding the room, it is a very standard room - you know.... bed, desk, TV, closet, bathroom. The rooms don't have mini-fridges or microwaves, but there is a coffee ... read more

no photos for3-30 & 31-2013 They were going to Madera Canyon to shoot migrating birds before heading back to San Diego airport, and Barb and I left this part up to spontaneity. Did I mention that Jakub brought seed to leave outside his window overnight to attract quail for early morning bird shots? You gotta love a guy like that; he pays his models well. When originally setting our plans, Barb and I weren’t sure yet where to spend this last night. Barb wanted to stay in Palm Springs from where we would fly on Easter Monday, and enjoy the town; I suggested we leave the Joshua Tree option in the mix in case there were places we missed or must revisit for better light; or we could stay the extra night in Tucson for similar ... read more

Geo: 33.8233, -116.512Palm SpringsOur stay in Borrego Springs can to an end and it was time for Antony to return to Paris. We drove back to San Diego and spent the day in Balboa Park and its museums before sadly saying "au revoir" to our Third Musketeer at the airport. From there we had a three-hour drive to Palm Springs and arrived just after dark. Eventually we found the Canyon Club, our B&B at 960 Palm Canyon Drive. Why do Americans have to have such long roads with thousands of numbers? Very confusing. Anyway the B&B had a nice pool, comfy rooms and was situated on the resort's main street within walking distance of Downtown.Palm Springs must once have been like Borrego Springs, a gritty little town in the desert. But now it is all boutiques ... read more

Loving Palm Springs so much, decided to stay another 3 nights! On Sunday the bikers all left town and everyhing quietened down quite a bit but the place was still busy and had a great feel about it, went to a store which was closing down and selling some amazing Americana, bought as much as we could get away with packing in our luggage and had a good rummage around, ate at a couple more really great restaurants and continued my theme of brightly coloured cocktails before dinner! Spent two relaxing afternoons in the glorious sunshine around the wonderful pool area, topping up the tan and having a well earned rest after the thousands of miles we have driven over the past 3 weeks. Could stay here forever...... read more

Well the time had come to leave "sin city" Vegas had been kind to us and we weren' t leaving out of pocket from the casino. Sad to leave but a huge AIDS convention was in town and the room price were trebled for the next few days. Had planned to go down to San Diego but again prices were high and as we had already been there before, decided to try something new and head for the oasis in the desert - playground of the rich, Palm Springs California. Another fairly unspectacular 4 hour drive apart from a few pretty mountain ranges, temperatures rising to over 100 degrees farenheit we eventually drove into town to find the biggest Biker Festival taking place over the weekend, downtown the roads were closed and many of the hotels ... read more

We spent today doing not very much, which I have to say was a welcome and much needed break. The morning saw a leisurely start to the day, followed by 4 hours poolside, swimming with the kids and relaxing in loungers as we saw fit. Visited the shops in the afternoon for a few hours, before stopping for a look at the 8 metre Marilyn Munroe, and returning to the pool. Palm Springs is quite a neat town. The main shopping area looks like something out of the 60s with a hint of mexican influence. Many of the streets are named after famour stars, like Bob Hope Drive, Ginger Roger Drive, Frank Sinarta Drive. A great stop for a relaxing break.... read more

After breakfast we hit the road again , but not before a quick stop at a sporting goods shop that we saw having a big sale. Managed to pick up a few bargains to add to our suitcase, with Brett being the main winner today! We didn't take the most direct route to Palm Springs as we wanted to stop and see a bit of The Joshua Tree National Park along the way. Made it there by around 2pm and stopped in at the visitors information centre to grab some maps etc. The ranger was fantastic and gave the kids a book each to fill out on things they observed and complete various activities. Kids love it and earned themselves a junior ranger badge when we left the park three hours later. Joshua Tree National Park ... read more

Where do I even begin? I could bitch about LA traffic but who can even remember such a trivial nonevent when compared to handsdown, the best first day of vacation that I can remember? Palm Springs - definitely an oasis in the middle of the dry, hot desert. An oasis on so many more levels as well. Is it possible that we have discovered such a gem of a place to stay that I hesitate to even share its name on this blog for fear that it will be over run and not available next time we visit? Hotel California is a boutique hotel on the far end of the strip. Beautifully manicured cactus and succulent landscape matched with lush, tropical banana plants. We were welcomed by name by the hotelier Lucy, daugher of the property's ... read more
