Sometimes referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world”, this rotating gondola tramway is the largest of its kind anywhere, and the only one in the Western Hemisphere. Starting at the foot of Mount San Jacinto it travels 2 ½ miles through the Chino Canyon nearly to the mountain’s top, two miles above sea level. Thus it gives access to the 273,000 acre (425+ sq. mi.) Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument, with its 54 miles (90+ km) of hiking trails, and to the smaller San Jacinto California State Park. This trip is relatively inexpensive and Margo and I consider it an absolute “must” when visiting anywhere within the Coachella Valley. First planned in 1935, its construction had to wait until after WWII, but it was completed in 1963 at no cost to the ... read more

The Valley Station is where we start.
We will travel almost 2 ½ miles (4 km), and will pass through climate zones the equivalent of a trip from Mexico to Canada.

Escaping from the Canadian Winter, Margo and I spent a month in southern California, mostly in Palm Springs and the surrounding area which forms the Coachella Valley. An extension of the Sonoran Desert, about 15 miles (24 km) wide and 45 miles (72 km) long, it is bounded by mountains on both sides, some as high as 11,000 feet (3,400 m). Palm Springs at the northern end of the Valley is about 120 miles (200 km) southeast of Los Angeles, and about 140 miles (230 km) northeast of San Diego. It’s far enough away that the frenzy of “Big City” life doesn’t impinge upon its tranquil lifestyle. For a very complete overview, go to http://en.wikipedia/wiki.org/Coachella_Valley The Valley is blessed with a multitude of hot springs, and there is ample irrigation from the Colorado River (think golf ... read more

So I have been sitting in Palm Springs by myself for the last 3 days. I know what you're thinking: "What could there be to do in Palm Springs in the middle of July in the heat". Funny you should ask. First of all the golf courses are all open and they are cheap!!!! I have played at least 27 holes everyday. The most I have paid was 25.00 and that came with 2 beers and a bottle of water. Since I was riding the motorcycle to and from the golf course I had to trade down to a couple of bottles of Gatorade (and a bottle of water.) Now it's time to ask, "How did you get the golf clubs to and from the golf course on your motorcycle?" I am glad you asked. DUCT ... read more

I’M TELLING YA, DON’T COME HOME! Who was it that told me emphatically “Don’t Come Home”? It wasn’t just one of you. Silly me for making plans to do so to service a handful of clients for whom I was unable to provide relief coverage. Once I had committed, well I couldn’t back out, and I couldn’t get my points back on my airfare in any event. So suck it up, it won’t be that bad, just 4 hectic days of a schedule packed tighter than sardines in a can, put my head down, get it done, just do it (my favourite mantra, thanks Nike), and then I will be back on that plane to Palm Springs and back on my beloved bike. Easy peasy. I’m into it less than two days now. Let’s rethink all ... read more

Heat of the Night!!!!! Time to get caught up again. The word of the day is HOT HOT HOT! To start with we are now in Palm Springs where I will be for the next 8 or nine days. Helli is flying home for 5 days to take care of work issues (sorry Hellli, rather you were staying). Before we left on this trip we knew it was going to be extremely hot in the south and it is. There is a heat wave here and even the locals are complaining. Since we are not locals we are dying. We left Vegas yesterday morning early. Up at 4:15, had toast and coffee. Packed the bikes and on the road by 5:30. At 5:30 it 36 degrees. The good thing is it stayed like that for almost ... read more

Thursday - had a little sleep in, boys did their own thing and I walked to the local shopping centre and had a mani and pedi which was a real treat, until I went to pay and they didn't take credit card, handed in watch and walked 20 minutes back to the villa to get some cash off Mark, then John drove me back to pay. Have had a bit of trouble with our passport cash card getting money transferred onto it! John was on the blower that night at 11.30p.m. trying to get things organised. Later in the arvo went around the main pool at the resort and had a cold beer at their bar, few laughs and fun, then drove down to Palm Springs for their Thursday night street market, where they close off ... read more

I'm off again to teach first graders in China. I did it two years ago in 2012 in Nanjing. This year I'll be in Sozhou. I'll be joining 14 other teachers from all over the country. We'll be doing a little sight-seeing before and after the school program. Before heading over the Pacific, I'll be spending a few days in Palm Springs, CA, to bask in the 105 degree sun... but it's a dry heat. After4 days I'll meet up with the group to fly to Shanghai, China, via Hong Kong. We'll spend a few days in Shanghai, then travel to Huangzhou, eventually arriving in Suzhou to teach at the Suzhou International Foreign Language School. After the 2 weeks of teaching is over, I'll be leaving the group, which will be traveling north to Xian and ... read more

We are now in Los Angeles until the end of our trip and before we board the Southwest Chief train save for a two-night stay in Palm Springs. Travel tip: Many museums in LA are open on different days- some are open on Monday such as the Huntingdon and Norton Simon. Others are open from Tuesday. It is also helpful to plan visits for those in the same area. The Huntingdon with its fabulous gardens and galleries is in Pasadena as is the Norton Simon- home of 20th century European and American art, 17th-19th century European art and Asian galleries. It pays to go on free docent tours that some of the museums provide. We travelled Route 10 towards Palm Springs and very soon the landscape and vegetation changed signaling that we were in the desert. ... read more

Los Angeles to Palm Springs Not surprisingly we woke quite early and were showered, dressed and having breakfast by 7.15 nicely in time to meeting the Tropical Sky rep. at 8 am in the lobby. Marc appeared complete with maps, a useful guide to our tour and all our hotel vouchers. He took us quickly through the trip and left us to get on and enjoy it. Having checked out we went straight back to Dollar Car Rentals as Marc had been quite clear that we really needed a navigation system and we had not got one. He was right ! Armed with our Garmin we decided to head for Hollywood via Sunset Boulevard. One wrong turn later and we found ourselves heading up through an area of rather expensive looking houses to the hills with ... read more

Here it is May 7th and we have not been home yet. We left LaPenita on March 20th. It was the first time we left on our own. No reason other then there always seems to be people leaving everyday. First night was Mazatlan, then San Carlos then Rio Rico. We have met some new people in Mexico so we spent a couple of days with Sid. Maria was away babysitting for a week so we missed her. Rio Rico is just a few minutes from Nogales, Az and it is a gorgeous area. So nice to see a town with a local. Our beautiful double door fridge/freezer had died a few weeks before we left Mexico so we had a very small electric fridge. We were anticipating spending a fortune to either buy a new ... read more
