Sunday 22nd December 2013 We slipped into our berth next to the battleship Iowa at the LA cruise terminal on a gorgeous, sunny morning. We stayed on-board until mid-morning. As we were staying in a suite we had preferential escort service from our concierge when we were ready to disembark. Shaun and Max headed off to pick up the rental car from Budget, 6 miles away in Long Beach while Jen and Di enjoyed relaxing in the lounge until they received the notification text that the boys were on their way back. They returned about an hour later with a nice new VW Passat, whose maximum luggage carrying capacity was tested to its limit, with 4 bods on board, 5 large suitcases and 4 cabin bags, not to mention the food and drink bag. We also ... read more

We're now on the floor in sleeping bags counting the last few days before departure. After three months of selling all possesions, our home of fifteen years now echoes of emptiness as we ready ourselves for our around the world adventure. We kicked off preparations three months ago with a humongous yard sale, followed by trashing, donating and really just ridding ourselves of everything we owned. The challenge of total house cleaning is more emotional than physical. Try disposing of your kids collection of soccer, piano or academic trophies. But with years of road travel ahead, something has to give. Now the mail has been forwarded, bills made paperless, neighbors and friends bid farewell to and our house rented, the countdown has begun. Amei and I have always held a wish to woldwide wandering, dreaming and ... read more

It's a long day when you are travelling from Salt Lake City via San Francisco to Los Angeles and then onto Brisbane, Australia. And there is that pesky issue of eight hours to kill in Los Angeles. Aside from the mandatory time spent cooling your heels and passing through more and more security at the airports, we are still left with about six hours to fill in, so we hop in a cab and head to Del Amo fashion centre in Torrance. It is apparently a great place to shop (the Aussie dollar has continued to improve against the greenback) and there is also a restaurant there called Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ. Michael has been on a mission to find the boys a great place to try Pork Ribs American style, and this could be just the ... read more

So I made it home! The last few days in Botswana, time nearly stood still. I did not get as much time with the children at Heidi's, but I did see them and I also spent another day at the Baylor clinic. This time at Baylor it was only me with about an average of 6 children at a time. The children and I did some art, I showed them some play doh and I read a few stories. One little girl was with me in there for about 3 hours awaiting her appointment, she was very educated, spoke wonderful English and was maybe 10 years old. She was frail and had a lesion on her face, she told me she forgot her bandage that day but hoped the Dr. would cover it for her as ... read more

The final stages of my summer trip are in the works. 4 more days and I will be boarding my first flight headed to Botswana. I can not even truly express my gratitude for this experience. None of this would have been possible without Rebecca making it so and I am so thankful to her whole family that this is going to happen. Africa has always been a dream to me, not the first place on my list to travel around alone but a very big dream to get there. There are soooo many places in Africa that I would like to visit and hopefully in the future that will all come to fruition, however Botswana is such a great start. From what I have been learning it is a very stable country in terms of ... read more

Flew into San Diego on Thursday after a hellishly long 20hour of lonely travel. Got a lift up to LA on Friday with a guy called John, and met Luke (woo!) for some good times fun. And was it fun times? It really really was. Haha. Been to various beaches, eaten a repulsive amount of food, and hung out with a bunch of excitable Americans. All good times, really. :)... read more

Unexpected blessings It is hard to believe that the two weeks in New York has already come to an end. It is sad really to say good bye to the East Coast, Lisa and I were really getting used to our life in the big city. People always think of Los Angeles as a chaotic big city, but we have come to believe that LA is a calm and comfortable place in comparison. Neither of us would choose to live in NYC, however we have adjusted to it and learned to love what we have experienced. We are both bummed that we were not able to experience a real autumn season ... turbulence break... The chill of the fall was such a wonderful feeling, to slightly bundle up and have fresh air to breathe rather than ... read more

So anyhow, the majority of this is not intended to be about my trip tomorrow so you will have to click on this link to go see what I wanted to share today: http://butterflyerin.blogspot.com/ The bottom line is that I want to get my head straight and start to deal with my medical condition. I would love to not be so fat and so I am looking into my options. HCG Diet seems to be one of them. You will have to read my blog first. Tomorrow I go to Zihuatanejo with Cindy, Craig, Aiden, the twins and a few friends. http://www.tideszihuatanejo.com/ I am excited to go somewhere tropical after a concrete jungle summer. My summer has been great so far and this will be the icing on the cake. This fat girl is going to ... read more
