It's a long day when you are travelling from Salt Lake City via San Francisco to Los Angeles and then onto Brisbane, Australia. And there is that pesky issue of eight hours to kill in Los Angeles. Aside from the mandatory time spent cooling your heels and passing through more and more security at the airports, we are still left with about six hours to fill in, so we hop in a cab and head to Del Amo fashion centre in Torrance. It is apparently a great place to shop (the Aussie dollar has continued to improve against the greenback) and there is also a restaurant there called Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ. Michael has been on a mission to find the boys a great place to try Pork Ribs American style, and this could be just the ... read more

We are sitting in an airport hotel room in Salt Lake City, Utah, waiting for a pizza delivery. (Sigh!) We should still be in our lovely log cabin on Powder Mountain but we fly home tomorrow and it is blizzarding in the mountains. We, and the neighbours who were responsible for getting us and our belongings on and off the mountain by snowmobile got a bit nervous about our planned 7.45am shuttle pick up, in a snow storm. So today we had to bid an early adieu to our home of a week on Powder Mountain. When we arrived in Utah 8 days ago, everyone was complaining about the lousy winter and lack of snow. They aren't complaining anymore. Powder Mountain has had several feet of fresh powder snow fall over the last few days and ... read more

Our taxi picked us up at 4.30am from our New York duplex to go to the airport and not surprisingly there was not a lot of enthusiasm amongst the troops for our twelve hours of travelling and two flights to get to Boise, Idaho. Idaho made it on to the itinerary largely due to a request from my Aunt to visit her and it also had the added bonus of a place to get a bit more skiing in before we reach our main skiing destination of Powder Mountain, Utah. None of us were too sure what we would find - but we were very pleasantly surprised. Boise is a low set city of about 300,000 people in a pretty sparsely populated state. In January the landscape is mostly brown, but it is not difficult to ... read more

New York is such an imposing, intense, pulsing city, it was no surprise that arrving there on the back of two weeks of beachside relaxation and snorkeling in Roatan, the contrast would seem even more dramatic. New York very soon overwrote everything in our memories as we roamed the city and took in the sights that have been made famous in so many TV shows, movies and stories. Our first day was New Years Eve and we overdid it by walking through the East Village, then around the edge of the river past Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and up through Wall Street and Battery Park, before we finally limped wearily to the subway for the F train ride back to our cool, renovated synagogue duplex in the East Village. Our landlord Haim had wisely suggested ... read more

Our arrival at the La Ceiba ferry terminal was a little rushed and difficult to manage as this time we had our four suitcases plus two very heavy, awkwardly sized, enormous boxes of groceries, fruit and vegetables and four grocery bags full of food as well. So it is not surprising that in the process of checking in our luggage and the boxes and carrying all our extra bags through the terminal, we forgot to to swallow our sea sickness tablets! Big Mistake! We purchased first class tickets on the ferry - not sure if it was worth the extra money or not, but when things start to get rough, we are very thankful. The upper, first class deck was fairly empty for our 4.30pm departure, and once ensconced with some snacks and a complimentary soft ... read more

Arriving in the dark after a much longer than expected drive from Cusuco National Park back to San Pedro Sula and then on to Tela, we have no sense of what the place will look like in daylight. But we are getting a little feel of the Caribbean flavour. There are elaborate Christmas lights near what seems to be the beachfront and we pass an enormous fenced compound which we learn is the Telamar resort - a massive all inclusive resort where the planeloads from North America, Canada and beyond descend upon. Any locals we spot are distinctly darker than their city cousins, being descendents of the Caribes, who escaped the slave ships in the late 1700's. Juan Carlos is a little unsure of where our hotel, the Maya Vista is located, so after a couple ... read more

We knew it coming in - it's no secret that San Pedro Sula is a big Honduran city with not a lot going for it. As we are driven along the main road from the bus terminal, the Coca Cola and Pepsi billboards both lay claim to Santa Claus and attempt to dominate the crowded skyline. San Pedro Sulan's main hobby must be shopping as large malls are a feature every few kilometres and American fast food chains and Power Chicken outlets drown out any independant and local food offerings. Not surprisingly a lot of the people are very overweight. To us, it is like the worst of America jammed into one location. Thankfully we are not staying to here to see San Pedro Sula. It is a logical base for a couple of 1 and ... read more

We expected to be picked up for the 45 minute drive from Copan Ruinas to Finca El Cisne, the coffee plantation we would be staying on for the next 2 days, in a pick up truck, which was a little concerning considering the light rain that was falling. So when a mini van arrived, we thought this is good, at least we will stay dry. That thought dissipated very quickly when we were sliding precariously along extremely muddy, steep roads not far from town. Alex was a very skilled driver but when your van with no seatbelts, full of 4 Australians, 3 Americans, 2 French Canadians and 2 Hondurans is sliding sideways, just inches from the edge of a very steep embankment, you start to get very nervous. There were several times where we called out ... read more

As we crossed the border into Honduras on our Hedman Alas bus trip, we were hit up for 40 Quetzales, departure tax from the Guatemalan official. We had not noticed anyone else having to pay when they handed over their passports and customs declarations, nor had we read of any fees payable to leave the country on land. But it is hard to argue with someone who is holding your passports, so despite having spent all our Quetzales (they kindly agreed to take US$) we paid up and walked across the road to Honduras and their officials. While waiting there for the rest of the bus passengers to clear customs we spotted a unique take on a no smoking sign on the window. The English translation is "Smoking is suicidal. Please go commit suicide somewhere else."Don't ... read more

Yesterday we spent most of the day sitting and waiting as we travelled to Copan Ruinas from Antigua. And again it reminded me of how the worst part of travelling is the travel. Why does even a straightforward trip of a few hours end up taking all day? And why is the travel component so unpleasant? Maybe it is just me? I tend to feel just a little bit queasy travelling by bus - just on the edge of motion sickness - and even luxury recliner seats do not seem to dissipate that completely. I also have a pathological hatred of being cooped up in any vehicle for too long - planes, trains, ships or automobiles. What is the psychological thing about not being able to get off -that really makes you want to get off? ... read more
