Flew into San Diego on Thursday after a hellishly long 20hour of lonely travel. Got a lift up to LA on Friday with a guy called John, and met Luke (woo!) for some good times fun. **Edited to add photos from Pisco, Peru to Uyuni, Bolivia** Caught a bus from Lima to Pisco, and was shocked (but not as much as I would have been had I not been told the day before that Peru is 30% desert or somethig like that) to open my eyes at one point to see sand stretching out for miiiiiles. We booked ourselves on a day tour to the Balletas Islands, commonly known as the "Poor Man´s Galapagos". It really was poor, but hilarious all the same! Loads of birds..... thousands and thousands of birds. A couple of penguins.... many sea lions. We visited Paracas national park in the afternoon and got to see loads of pickled things in jars, and 5 flamingos way in the distance. 5 pink specs, I should say. Relaxed in Pisco´s ... read more
After 5 days of travelling from Nosy Be in Madagascar to get to Peru, we finally arrived at Lima on the 24th of June!! Peru was a lot colder than I´d expected.... and a lot more so than Madagascar. Lima is cold, cloudy and grey, and thick with pollution. The buses are wicked, however, and have conductors who yell out the destinations with the same enthusiasm as fruit´n´veg stall holders in UK markets. We spent the first 8 days hanging around various parts of Lima (firstly at the Point hostel in Barranco, then onto HI in Miraflores, and lastly Kusillus hostel in the centre of Miraflores). We visited the San Fransisco museum, catacombs, cathedral, saw the changing of the guards in Lima central´s Plaza de Armas. (Also got our pictures taken by some random school children ... read more
Um cant really think of what specifically to talk about in this little postie as I am so mindnumbingly bored having sat here for the last 45 mins waiting for this and my hotmail to load. Camp life is awesome!! My home is in a little hut (i say hut but really I mean some bits of wood with a tin roof and tarp walls... and comfy comfy coral and rocks for a floor. Mmmhmm! Couldnt think of anything better ;). Spent the first couple of weeks getting into the swing of camp life, doing various lectures on the sea creaturese etc that live in the Bay, and doing our dive training. Food is delicious... aha... pancakese for breakfast, bread at 9, and rice n beans for the last two meals. we have the same thing...every ... read more
We spent the first day hiding in our hotel becquse tana is scary and busy and loads of people ask you in French for money and we didnt understand... :P We cqaught a flight from Tana to Diego at 6am on the 30th/31st (I forget which) and met a girl from the forest group called Rosanna. We met a coupàle more guys from frontier in Diego and hung out all day, saw the market etc. The power went out thqt night tho so we were at a restaurant with no lights and had to try and get ho,e in the dark but it was pretty cool cause there was live music and people were dancing and hving fun hehe. Yesterday and today we went to a fancy hotel in town and hung out by the pool ... read more
We finally made it!!! We got to our hotel at about 1o'clock this morning after about 35 hours travelling. Our flight from Heathrow was delqyed for a couple of hours so we got to hqng out in a stuffy non-airconditioned departure gqte thing for ages before the plane was fixed qnd we could go. The flight was alright and we got to Mauritius (which is absolutely stunning!!) at 8 in the morning; so pip and I were hqppy thqt our 9 hour or so wait for the flight was now under 8. Through our long day wait we watcxhed ppl come and go while we sat on a bench tired qnd hungry and bored. At 3 our plane hadnt arrived yet even tho we were supposed to be boarding soon and we got told our seat ... read more
