So having been home for a few weeks it is now time to start major planning on our upcoming road trip as we leave on Sat. Talk about putting things off until the last minute. Last year on our way home from Alaska a wheel bearing burned up and Dale patched it enough to make it home. We took the RV into the shop finally and found that all 4 wheels needed repairs, the fridge vent cover was falling apart and needed to be replaced and that a board was out on the water heater. Dale wanted to do the repairs but the shop came down in price so that it was easier to let them do the work. Now the RV is still in the shop so I’m now wondering how I will clean and ... read more

After planning for the past 11 months, researching concerts, hotels and so on, we are finally on our way to Europe. I was really so proud of myself yesterday; I had cleaned up the house, finally putting away all of the painting supplies and sorting through all of the piles that had collected during the partial remodel, cleaned the kitchen floor. Clothes and our trip stuff were starting to be collected. Gosh, for the 1st time in my life I was going to actually get packed in plenty of time and get a decent night’s sleep. Dale and I had decided that we would only try to carry only carry-on’s but we soon realized that we would also need his backpacking pack. This was all great but then reality set in about 9 pm. 1st, our ... read more

Before we go to Prague we will go to Salzburg then Vienna, all this after visiting friends but that is another blog. I found a dinner concert at the St. Peters Abby which looks good but touristy. It takes place in one of the oldest restaurants in Europe with music of Mozart. I still haven’t bought tickets just because I’m not sure it is what we want to do. The books say it is in the famous Baroque Hall but I can’t find any information about this hall and why it is famous. There is also the same type, dinner/concert in Vienna and I’d thought that it would be fun to attend in the castle where Mozart actually played but now I’m afraid that it will just be too touristy. We did pick up tickets for ... read more

About 20 years ago we took our 3 pre-teen boys to Dorothy Chandler, The Music Center, to hear Vivaldi’s “The 4 Seasons”. We went to the lecture before the concert where the conductor played music which had actually been recorded at a historic music hall. I don’t remember which hall the music was recorded at any more but I do remember that my middle son and I looked at each other and said that we needed to go to Europe to hear the music. I’ve been to Prague a couple of times during the winter traveling with some of our German friends, staying in a B&B outside of the old city and doing fun stuff but there was so much music to hear. After our last trip I told my husband, Dale that I really wanted ... read more

On the road for a week; my gosh.... Hello from Bakersfield, CA; Since my last post, we have stayed in Red Bluff and Turlock, CA. Both nights were spent at the Moose club; $10 a night charge to park and use their power and water. People have been very nice. In fact , in Red Bluff, a man named Ron went back to his house, printed us out some maps, and brought them to us the next morning. I hope we are as friendly at our lodge when out of towners come in!! Coming over the Siskyous was fine; no snow; in mountain passes until well after Shasta; Ate up the fuel; Curt is a good 4 -5 hour driver; we usually leave around 10 and park around 3. California roads are all what you have ... read more

Here we go again! Yes, the dynamic duo – Den and Em with their trusty sidekick – KC are off on a new adventure. They are in a new trailer in hopes of reducing some of the challenges of Em's 19 footer. You may think challenges is a bit mild, however it was not the difficulty or the stress and strain they caused, but rather the number of them. Of course we will not be challenge free, but in this new 28 footer with a rear living area, a center dining room and a separate bedroom (curtains count as walls) they should be reduced. A solar unit was added to minimize battery problems and we will no longer be living out of coolers, plastic containers, duffel bags, or pickup storage. This unit has mucho storage that ... read more

This day began with Saket and I going back to SFO airport to pick up our rental car. We rented a Chevy Suburban which is a pretty big SUV, and we were excited to get our hands on this beast. We picked up Santosh, Abhishek and Rama from the hotel, and headed towards the biggest attraction of SFO - The Golden Gate Bridge! Rama and I were experimenting with our DSLR cameras, and hopefully we would have clicked a few decent pictures. As we moved towards downtown, we came across the popular sloped streets of SFO. It was quite a roller coaster ride, at 10 mph though. Next, we went to the crookedest street in SFO, which is Lombard street. It's a very steep, twisted road and cars can barely manage to get down without scraping ... read more

Getting off to Alaska was more chaotic than any trip I can remember. I've been so busy with building some new farmers markets that the trip was put on back burner. Then, suddenly we had only two days to prepare but the workers for our markets couldn't make it so I had to work. Yesterday I finally had to start getting ready for this 3 week trip. Early in the morning I went to get a bowl of cereal and found the milk from the fridge warm, not a good sign. As the morning went on I found that other items were not as cold as they should be and by afternoon found the fridge temp to be 81°. I got the fridge cleaned out and a few items into a neighbors fridge to keep. After ... read more

I think that I’m more excited about anyone else over our upcoming Alaska trip, but then the grandkids don’t know about all of the plans yet. As I’ve written before, we have been to Alaska 2 times with our kids so now we have it down on the best route and places to visit. We like to start in Anchorage, go down to the Kenai and then up to Denali. In the Kenai we like to take a wildlife cruise with a National Park Ranger along. The rangers give talks along the way. Then we like to camp inside of Denali National Park at Teklanika campground about 30 miles inside the park. Once inside it is fun to take the National Park shuttle bus back into the backcountry. The drivers keep contact with each other stopping ... read more
