DYESS COLONY An Arkansas cotton planter named William Reynolds Dyess was director of the Arkansas Emergency Relief Administration during the Great Depression. He came up with a notion to use undeveloped land on the floodplain of the Mississippi River in northwest Arkansas to provide an opportunity for destitute tenant farmers and sharecroppers to acquire ownership of subsistence farms. The acreage in question was cut over forest and swampland but it had good deep topsoil that was perfect for growing cotton. Dyess pitched his idea to the feds and it was approved by the Roosevelt Administration in February of 1934. The land was purchased by the government for what was owed in back taxes. The Dyess Colony, as it came to be known, was populated by farmers from throughout the State of Arkansas. Thousands of applicants applied ... read more

Typical routine...up, dressed, breakfast, and pack the car. We’re headed home to WEST VIRGINIA!! Now it is no secret that I love to travel but I really love going home!! We only had one thing planned fir the day. I saw a video on my Facebook about a giant ice cream cone. I studied the video over and over until I could see part of the name. I researched and discovered the place was on our way home....sort of!! It would take us about an hour out of our way but we were all game to try it!!! So off we went to Garfield, Arkansas and the ShortStop Grill. Garfield was about 3.5 hours away so that would be perfect fir a bathroom/lunch stop! When we hit there I told the gal st the counter that ... read more

We decided to rent a cabin at Devils Den State Park for a little Rest and Relaxation. Our cabin, number 16, is really a studio with bed, couch, kitchen and bath. It is equipped with a nice TV with cable and a wood burning fireplace, which they provide a bundle of wood for each day there. It really is nice and cozy for two. After we checked in and got settled in cabin, we walked around by the other cabins. This is a Sunday and nice weather, so there were a lot of people doing day hikes. In the evening, DH build a fire and we relaxed, watching a bit of TV. Tomorrow we will do a day hike. I had a very restful night, sleeping over 8 hours. Next morning, after breakfast, we sat outside ... read more

Our leisurely Hot Springs day was planned. We'd be driving back into town, I'd drop Cathy off for her spa appointment, and I'd head out to find a few bits and pieces I needed for repairs. Warning -- boring technical paragraphs ahead -- The previous night I had taken the opportunity to try our new fridge without plugging in the onboard converter. Sure enough, just as the service guy at Camping World said, it worked fine on gas. Next I tried it on 115AC, with the converter unplugged -- again, fine. So then I plugged in the converter, and yup, the dreaded "ERROR" light came on, and it shut right down. So I checked the converter output voltage -- 15.5V -- way too high. With no place nearby to get a new converter, I decided to ... read more

We got back on the road after our service visit at Camping World. It was our intention to head into Arkansas next, to visit Hot Springs. The fastest and most direct route would be to head down through Nashville and Memphis, then out I40 towards Little Rock. We had a terrible time driving through Nashville last year though, so we decided to plot out an alternative course. We headed straight west from Bowling Green for a bit, then angled down into Tennessee on some nice rural two lane roads. Our route took us through Clarksville, and at one point we reached an intersection with a big arrow calling for a left turn towards that town. At that moment both Cathy and I started singing "Take the Left Turn to Clarksville" simultaneously. It was a strange coincidence ... read more

We had a short and easy run after our loud night in that I40 rest area. West past Little Rock, and onto a nice new four lane US70 into Hot Springs. We got a great site in the National Park campground, $15/n with power and water, half off regular price by virtue of our US Seniors (Old Farts) Pass. Cathy immediately recognized the campground as the same one she had stayed in on a previous coast to coast trip 38 years ago. That would be in a time before Tom. The only thing to keep us awake there would be the babbling stream we were set up next to, ear plugs not needed. The sky began to clear as we set up, and we decided to stretch our driving-atrophied legs with a hike over the hill ... read more

We got up and drove all day to get to San Antonio. We stopped off at Little Rock to eat the Purple Cow. The boys remembered the restaurant from several years ago and really wanted to visit the place again. It was just as good as we remembered it with purple milkshakes. Then we drove to Hot Springs, Arkansas to see the National Park there. The old majestic bath houses are preserved and open for tours. We continued our drive through Dallas and Austin then ended up at San Antonio at 1:00 am.... read more

We had more storm threats during the night and were afraid that we would have a rainy day. That fear almost came through...Tom was once again camp chef. He prepared what he calls Mountain Man Breakfast as he once again used his handy dandy fire pit Dutch oven. This delectable concoction consisted of eggs, sausage, cheese, potatoes, and I am not sure what else. The end result looked like a quiche and was beyond delicious. As it happened, about ten seconds after we all sat down at the picnic table to partake of this treat, the rain once again started to fall. It is amazing how fast you can move when your food is threatened for sure! Within what felt like was 30 seconds, we all had our plates, drinks and silverware picked up and placed ... read more

We actually were awakened around 4:00 this morning to a horrific thunderstorm. It must have been really close because the lightening would light up inside the motor home. However, we were snug and safe inside our little cocoon! By the time we were up and about and ready to start our day, the rain had stopped and the air was much cooler than yesterday evening. Our plan this morning was to hitch a ride in the Big Blue Truck and go to the Petit Jean Mountain overlook and the historical site of Petit Jean’s gravesite. The view from the top of the bluff looking out over the Arkansas River was almost 180 degrees. It was magnificent. There we saw once again some of the huge rocks that make up Petit Jean Mountain. I hope the pictures ... read more

For those of you who live in Wilson County...we can no longer say that we have most of the rock in the world. That title HAS to belong to the area in Arkansas known as Petit Jean State Park. We have never seen the beat. Rocks, and I mean BIG rocks, comprise a big part of this park. We met up with “the kids” at 8:45 and headed out in their big blue truck to the trail head for Cedar Creek Trail. I think they were trying to kill us. Kim—if this is their time to check and see if we are still competent and yours and Mike’s is the next time—you can check with your sister and get what should be a good report on us. We kept up (with only a little help hauling ... read more
