We had more storm threats during the night and were afraid that we would have a rainy day. That fear almost came through...Tom was once again camp chef. He prepared what he calls Mountain Man Breakfast as he once again used his handy dandy fire pit Dutch oven. This delectable concoction consisted of eggs, sausage, cheese, potatoes, and I am not sure what else. The end result looked like a quiche and was beyond delicious. As it happened, about ten seconds after we all sat down at the picnic table to partake of this treat, the rain once again started to fall. It is amazing how fast you can move when your food is threatened for sure! Within what felt like was 30 seconds, we all had our plates, drinks and silverware picked up and placed inside their 5th wheel at their table. Whew! A pretty heavy storm passed through as we ate. After our meal—with the rain still coming down—we played a little Mexican Train. I won’t talk about who won...but I am STILL Mexican Train Champion. I will add that there were a few sore losers. Just saying... John did make the statement that there are two ways to
be recognized...high score and low score...
After the rain stopped, we could tell that the sun seemed to be trying to peek between the clouds. After lunch we all got once again in the Big Blue Bus and headed (wait for it!) camper’s Mecca, Walmart. As it happened, the closest Walmart was about 20 miles away. Tom wanted to get fuel and John wanted a replacement band for his FitBit. I think he was getting a little anxious about falling behind in the fitness challenge between Kim and Mike. His FitBit has been in my purse since yesterday and he frets that Kim especially will beat him. It is a done deal that Mike will as he beats everyone.
After our foray into civilization, Tom drove us to Mt. Nemo State Park to check it out for possible later camping trips. The views from there were outstanding but the road going up to the park can give you whip lash and vertigo for sure! It was recommended that nothing longer than a 24’ trailer go up and we could see why. There was an 18% grade in some places which is steeper
than the road from Jackson Hole, WY over into Idaho. However, once you reach the top, the views are unsurpassed. It was a small campground—maybe 40 sites total—and some of the sites would be challenging to get into. There was even a swimming pool right on the edge of the overlook. Amazing!
Laura wanted to drive to both Sunset and Sunrise Points to see the views from there, and both were well worth the drive. I took a few pictures that will give you a small idea of how vast the views are.
After touring Mt. Nemo, we headed back to Petit Jean. As I write this, John is cleaning up our outdoor rug and preparing it to put it away in preparation for our pulling out of camp tomorrow. Tom (bless his heart) is once again cooking everyone’s supper in the ever versatile Dutch oven. Laura did all of us a favor giving him that for Christmas for sure! I have decided that when your daughter suggests a camping trip (especially if Tom’s gourmet meals are included) you just say “yes” and go with the flow. It always works! We are
not sure yet (at least I haven’t been informed) where we are going as we head out tomorrow. It will be sad to leave our kids, but will also be nice to get on the road once again. With any luck, we will have adequate wifi as we travel forward for the next little while, and you won’t be bombarded with several blog posts all in one day. Stay tuned!
