Saturday May 26, 2012 As a kid back in the 70’s, I would listen to the radio as I fell asleep at night. I had found a radio station that would play the old radio shows on Sunday nights. One of my favorites was the Lum and Abner show. The show took place in Pine Ridge Arkansas. The characters were storekeepers at the Jot’em Down Store. Visiting the Jot’em Down Store in Pine Ridge has been on my list of things to do for a long time. Every time I was in the area there was always a reason why I couldn’t do it. It has been a while since I have been able to take a trip. Driving relaxes me and I needed a trip, so Friday night I decided to take a daytrip the ... read more
Left at 10am in Uma and Maanoj's car for the Museum called Crystal Bridges. (http://crystalbridges.org/) This is a free Museum, owned and funded by Walmart. The art pieces in the Museum are the private collections of Sam Walton's wife and daughter. They have colonial art collections and also contemporary pieces. The Museum Halls and Restaurant are all sitting on a natural creek, beautifully designed and well maintained. They also maintain beautiful trails called Orchard Trails for nature lovers. This place was suggested by Maanoj. Many people travel from distant places to come here. Uma was seeing this for the first time although she is living so close to this place. We spent an hour in the Museum, half hour on the trail, had lunch. After a few rounds of 56 at home left Uma's place at ... read more
M came and picked us up at 7am. Reached Uma's house after a 5 hour drive. Uma showed us her house. It was time for lunch. So, without even sitting down left for lunch. Had lunch at an Indian restaurant called Indian Orchard..only buffet lunch...was good. Also ordered a couple of side dishes for the night. Then Uma took us to Walmart Stores. The Batmobile was being exhibited there until 3pm. Quite a number of people had come there to see it. While driving around saw Bogle Park. Next stop was 5 and 10..called five and dime, where Sam Walton of Walmart fame started his first shop. This shop has been converted into a Museum about the history of Sam Walton and Walmart. Then Uma took us to her office. From there went to Maanoj's office ... read more
We are on the road again, this time heading west for the Pacific Coast. We drove as far as Hot Springs, Arkansas and are camped for the night in the Gulpha Gorge Campground in the Hot Springs National Park. Kerry is thrilled to get half price camping in the national parks with his oldtimer’s pass. This is the only national park that is in a city. We have been to the Visitor Center which is in one of the old bath houses. We toured the Fordyce Bathhouse and walked along Bathhouse Row where folks have been coming to partake of the healing waters for 200 years or longer. Several of the old bathhouses are still in use and you can enjoy the baths, get a massage, or just drink the waters, which are available to fill ... read more
September 16—Another NOMAD project under my belt, I take off to discover Arkansas. I stopped for the night at a camp site at the Buffalo National River. This river, located in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas, was designated a national river by Congress in 1972. The residents of the area petitioned that to happen to avoid having the river dammed by the Corps of Engineers. It's preservation as a “natural” river has enhanced the area as a wildlife refuge and preserved many prehistoric native American sites as well as 18th century farm buildings. The buffalo which originally roamed the area and after which the river is named, were hunted out long ago. I don't know how many other national rivers there are in the U.S., but the Buffalo is certainly worth a visit. It is an ... read more

Published: February 8th 2012North America » United States » Arkansas » Little RockThe joke on the way was that we have a high chance of getting fellatio if we go to Arkansas, the home of Bill Clinton (a different term used at the time). We wondered if that was just a past time in the area - since not only Bill and Monica Lewinsky - but now we had the 50 year old with that ‘irresistible’ tongue back in Clarksdale revealing so (read previous blog before drawing conclusions.) With the prospect of getting fellatio we realised we hadn’t done a Hooters yet and that was a requirement of our road trip - To go to not only as many fast food joints but sit down restaurants which exploit female assets. World famous Hooters I have to say is the worst of America’s offerings. On Mondays during the football ... read more
Road trip through southern Missouri and northern Arkansas
Published: October 27th 2011North America » United States » ArkansasLast year we decided we wanted to do something a little different than we usually do. We planned a three day, two night run through northern Arkansas. We drove down on a Thursday evening and arrived at out hotel in Bentonville at about 8:30pm. The room we had reserved was not the room we got but we were tired from the four hour drive down so we just decided to grin and bear it and get some sleep. The following morning my wife said she found hair in the tub and after seeing the room in the sunlight we realized what a mess we had slept in. Despite the hotel problems the next day started pretty decent. On our way to Pea Ridge National Military Park we came across the Roger’s Municipal-Carter Field Airport where we ... read more
Hi all, well it is not long now before I will be heading home and looking forward to Aotearoa. Alot has happened since we last blogged mostly unexpected events. We left Washington DC and headed too Chicago to catch a connecting flight to Memphis only to find that our flight had been cancelled and the next one won't be until the following day, all good. They just put everyone up in a hotel with complementary food vouchers, so we got to spend a night in chicago. Caught our flight the next day where Jono dad and his aunty met us she is a hoot (Linda) so we have been spending our time with her. Linda lives an hour drive from Memphis in the rural sector, all flat land where she is surrounded by bean crops. Linda ... read more

Published: September 9th 2011North America » United States » Arkansas » JonesboroHaving filled my tank before I checked into the motel last night, I was ready to roll at sunup. Except that my route took me straight into the blinding morning sun. I felt completely disoriented as I merged with traffic on eastbound I-44 and fumbled my way to U.S. 65 south to U.S. 60 east. I stopped for a McDonald's breakfast at Mountain Grove, about an hour down the road, and was chagrined to find the Wifi wasn't working. I gassed again at Thayer and rode into my garage about 12:30.... read more

Published: August 26th 2011North America » United States » Arkansas » JonesboroThe UPS truck never showed up yesterday, so they put it out for delivery today. I saw around all day - mowed the grass, reinstalled Firefox on the VAIO laptop, did all kinds of busy work to occupy myself - planning to hit the road as soon as the package with my Kathmandu pants arrived. I finally gave up at 5 p.m. and sent emails to Rich Nathan and Maria to that effect. Naturally, the UPS truck arrived at 5:15 p.m. with my package. So I had a quiet evening at home, finishing up my packing, rather than a frenzied dash to some motel in central Illinois. I hope to be on the road shortly after 6 a.m. tomorrow. The Citgo station's pay-at-the-pump system was working today, so I topped off the tank and also updated ... read more
