Greetings from Arkansas - the Natural State It is so great to see green trees and green grass again! We came to Eureka Springs because a friend of Marc's lives nearby and told us what a great town it is. He did not tell us that we would have to drive the 40 foot Motorcoach up a narrow, winding mountain road with very few guard rails. This was for at least 10 miles! It is lovely though! Last night we took a taxi into town because the trolley stopped running at 6. We strolled around the hilly streets and admired the limestone structures and early 20th century architecture. The town is filled with restaurants, shops, B&Bs and old buildings. We ate at a great restaurant called The Grotto. It is in the basement of an old ... read more

Geo: 35.3846, -94.4213This morning, we toured Graceland before hitting the road again. It took us just less than three hours to wait in line, go through the self-guided tour, have a break for a cold drink, and visit the gift shops. I had purchased the tickets ahead of time to pick up at the will-call window. As it turned out, that was the longest line when we were there, and it didn't help us to get any priority to take the tour. After getting our tickets, I noticed that the clerk had moved us up for a tour thirty minutes earlier than requested so we went straight to get in line for the shuttle to the mansion. That line lasted forty-five minutes or so, but finally we were given headphones and iPads to use during the ... read more

Geo: 36.0632, -94.1579After some much needed relaxation at the Weaver Inn in Mansfield, it was time to head out en route to new sites and a new state! Breakfast on Sunday did not start until 8 so I did not get on the road until 8:30. My total trip today was projected at 162 miles so I had plenty of time to stop along the way as needed. My first stop today was Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. This is a national park site and is located just outside the town of Republic MO. It took me a little under an hour to drive to the park and it was easy to find, which I always appreciate. The exhibits in the museum are free, however there is an entrance fee for the tour road. The fee is $15 ... read more

We made two speed runs on the open prairie stopping at Sioux Falls, SD and Peculiar, MO for one night each. That brought us here to Viola, Arkansas and the home of my Aunt and Uncle, Judy and Tom Frank. It also brought us to the hot humid weather of the southern states. We have had a great visit in Viola with my cousins, their children and of course catching up with my Uncle Tom. I was 15 when Tom Frank came into our family, marrying my father's sister Bonnie. When we lost Bonnie 14 years ago Tom found Judy and that was perfect fit for him here in Arkansas. Tom and I were very close as I trudged through high school spending summers working on cars and winters hunting together in the Sierra Nevada's. It ... read more

Jim and Don were going home today to Fayetteville. They got on the road for home around 11:00 AM. We said our goodbyes at the top of the drive down to the cabin. Jim and Don headed north and Jim Hunt, Mike and I headed south. We were going to Searcy, AR to go to a Yamaha dealer to check into a problem Mike has been having. Mike has a Yamaha Roadliner and has been getting buffeting in his head at highway speeds. We were going to see if they had some kind of answer to the problem possibly with the windshield. Unfortunately, the Yamaha dealer in Searcy was closed on Monday. Our next destination was the Harley Davidson dealer in Conway, AR, the Toad Suck Harley Shop. We went there specifically to get Jim to ... read more

Today Jim Hunt and Mike were going to go trout fishing on the Little Red River, while Jim Kribs, Don and I were going to do some local riding. We took off for a place called Fairview Bay, thinking it would be a bay on the big lake and we could find a restaurant on the water to have lunch, but nooooo, there was no place on water and no place open other than a Mexican place called El Poblano. We ate a rather mediocre lunch there, before doing some grocery shopping and heading back to the cabin. Jim and Mike had better luck. They went fishing on the Little Red River with a guide out of Pangburn, AR. The little Red River is a world class trout fishing river and they caught somewhere between 35 ... read more

We got a relatively early start from the Chase Hotel, which is on the west side of St. Louis. In order to get out of the big city, we took I-55 for about 35 miles to the town of Festus, MO where we got on US 67 southbound. 67 is a four lane road and the further south we rode the less traffic there was. It became a very enjoyable road winding through the southern Missouri Ozarks. We rode 67 into Arkansas and then took US 62 west to the town of Pocahontas, where we took a lengthy break to cool down and rehydrate for the next leg of the trip. Since Heber Springs is in a dry county, we stopped at a Walmart in Poplar Bluff to pick up some beer and liquor for ... read more

Even though it was not quite where we expected to be, our stay in the Coushatta Casino RV Park was very pleasant in several ways. Not only was it a 5* park but we got a “Good Sam” offer of 2 nights for one. This should have made it $20 a night but somehow the total bill was $77 for 6 nights, not a bad result, and yes I did query it but they insisted it was correct, so what can you do? Also we were given $10 each to spend in the casino, I ended up with $24, not a great profit but not a loss and it provided a couple of evening’s entertainment & free cocktails, which were not short in the alcohol content. There was a free concert at the pool side where ... read more

Next stop Charlotte North Carolina for the night. Tomorrow my flight for Madrid leaves at 4:30 p.m. eastern time and arrives at 7 a.m. on the 19th May. One interesting thing about this blog entry is that I am not typing this rather using voice activation with my cell phone. I noticed that there are a bunnch of misspelled words or maybe I'm not speaking clearly? Anyway .if you see a misplled word or two its the machine not me :).
