N - 20.68378degrees W - 088.56870 degrees Elevation - 138 ft. This, my friends is a bit of a long story! The story begins at the airport in Cancun. I think we flew in about 8 or 9 in the evening. It was of course after 10 by the time we got through customs. We needed transport and weren’t sure what our best option was going to be so we struck up a conversation with some “wonderful” transportation representatives. They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. “Do a 1.5 hour tour of a timeshare resort in Playa del Carmen and get a free breakfast and free bus-ride and tickets to Chichen Itza. We thought perfect we get a nice breakfast for our first day in Playa and we get our trip to Chichen sorted ... read more

Today we sent off for Chichen Itza. One word: overrated. They stopped allowing tourists to walk up the main pyramid a few years ago so there wasn't a lot of walking up steps at this one. It's the most complete city we've seen and the ball court was impressive. But the amount of tourists (many of them Amecians dressed in bikini tops, denim micro shorts and cowboy boots) made it busy and less enjoyable. So far my favourites have been Teotihuacan for its size and ability to walk up the stairs and Palenque for the beauty and craftsmanship of the carvings. After Chichen Itza we headed for Cancun. Our hotel is 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone, where the five star hotels and nightlife is located. But it's also only a 15 minute bus trip to ... read more

Free day in Merida, another beautiful colonial city. I spent my free time shopping, sightseeing and finding a beautician to prepare myself for three sunfilled days in Cancun! It's the little things like haircuts and waxing appointments that help give me some routine.... read more

We left Campeche for Uxmal, another Mayan ruin. This site was different to the others, the most beautiful so far in terms of architecture. Afterwards we stopped into to see a Mayan family who made hammocks and grew a lot of their own vegetables and herbs. We arrived in Merida in the late afternoon to more rain. We have a free day tomorrow, hopefully it won't rain. I'm just looking forward to sleeping in.... read more

hope your all well and that the autumn is not too cold. spent the mexico day of independence in Tulum. This consists of the whole nation sinking gallons of tiqula (which I have never liked and wont go near) but its a carnival in every street with the most awful out of tune brass bands on the planet. An ex public school brigaderes son from Chelsea 'Tom (whom i call master Henshaw) and i where looking for a bar in a jungly part of the coast where we stumbled across a massive film crew filming Bulgarian Temptation Island - we nearly got in stating we where the mystery gay couple and that an email from our agent had been sent. We knew our fib would not work when 5 security guards with guns came for us. ... read more

Today I went on a trip organised by my hostel to see some Cenotes (sen-oh-tays) which are sink holes that are found in loads of places on the Yucatan Peninsular. The guide only spoke in Spanish, but I think he said that they were created years ago (maybe 2000? maybe not!) when there was a meteor crash. However, this may be completely wrong! The cenotes were beautiful. They are kind of like underground caves with only light coming through in a few places. The water was clear and cool and there were lots of underwater stalagmites and stalactites. The first one we visited was 25m deep in places! There were tree roots which had broken through the cave roof and dangled down into the water. The snorkelling was wonderful, it was like being in another world. ... read more

I arrived in Merida on the 16th of Sept, and although I only planned on staying a night or 2 I´ve actually ended up staying for 5 nights as the hostel is really nice and I´ve met some really nice people. The dorm I´m staying in is really spacious with hammocks that you can lounge around in and nice communal areas. There is free breakfast, but I wasn´t particularly impressed with the dodgy coffee and toast with jam. I have no idea how they manage it, but every single piece of bread in the loaf is a crust. Hmmmm.... what can you expect for less than 4 pounds a night I suppose! They also give free salsa lessons every night which is really good fun, but I quickly realised that I was the special needs student ... read more

Another early morning to try and get to visit a temple ruin before the world and his dog arrive! Chichen Itza is one of the most famous and most visited temple ruins in Mexico. Apparently someone recently made a list of ´the new 7 wonders of the world´and Chichen Itza was on it. I just like the name, it reminds me of ´chicken pizza´!!!! It´s a really nice site, but unfortunately you aren´t allowed to climb any of the structures anymore which is a shame. Won´t bore you with any of the historical info, but I had a really nice morning there and left just as the coachloads of American and Japanese tourists started to pour in! ps Haven´t seen any rain for over a week- yey! (touch wood)... read more

This a a posting to get everyone on board about our latest travel plans. We will be departing for the Yucatan peninsula on September 27. First we will head strait to Merida and then to the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. Around the Equinox the pyramid at the ruins gets hit just right with the light and looks like a serpent going up the corner of the pyramid or something along those lines. I haven't read about it lately so correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, we should be there by the 30th to celebrate my 30th birthday with the ancients as it were. Beyond that we will begin an extended journey for which we have no set itinerary. We are going to visit Natalie's uncle in Cancun for a short while and then continue ... read more
