Monday, August 20, 2007, 3:45 p.m Meriday, Yucatan, Mexico time The National Hurricane Center has issued Hurricane Dean advisory #31, http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/202032.shtml. This was at 5 p.m. EDT. Hurricane Dean is still predicted to come in on a more southern course than thought two days ago. Belize appears to be in the main path. According to the advisory, the storm is currently 270 miles from land, moving on a western path at 20 mph. It is expected to take a more west by northwest path in 24 hours. That would be after landfall I am assuming as 270 miles divided by 20 mph (should he not get in a bigger hurry) would put landfall at approximately 1 a.m. in the coming morning. This huge storm is expected, they say, to dump 5 to 20 inches in areas. ... read more

Day 5 Anticipating Dean Monday, August 20, 2007, 7:45 a.m. Dean has changed predicted route once more. Still time to do so again. At the moment the storm is thought to enter below Cancun and travel below Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Of course the storm has an outreach of 60 miles as far as hurricane force winds are concerned and 205 miles of tropical wind reach. That information was as of last night. I also researched a little and think the Yucatan is about 300 miles deep (north to south). One degree in longitude equals 69 miles from what I read on worldatlas.com. Now, of course, this was very late last night and I was very tired. Was waiting to hear that Grant made it to Beaumont and he did. http://www.yucatan.com.mx/ Diario de Yucatan Papers this morning ... read more

Preparations around the area include the trimming of vegetation that could cause unneeded damage during an intense storm. My apartment manager is constantly trimming in the complex and he was steady trimming and dragging limbs to the street all yesterday. The garbage truck made it’s second visit to this neighbor in three days. This is sound preparation in my thinking. At 6:15 p.m. last evening I received a text message on my Telcel (Mexico cell) phone. It advised that the state of Yucatan’s alert level had been raised to yellow (still orange then red to go - my words, not theirs). This message was sent on behalf of the Civil Protection department and Telcel, Mexico’s largest cell phone provider. I was impressed. Afterward, I walked several blocks to the ATM and traffic and population milling around ... read more

Son, Grant, left Dallas around noon today via bus for Beaumont. It's 11:19 pm and Nancy just called to say Gabriel was on the way to the bus station to pick him up. He'll be with Nancy and Gabriel for a couple of days and they plan to put him to work helping Sofia and John move in to their new house. That is the only reason I'm still awake. Waiting to make sure he did, in fact, get to Beaumont. Tomorrow is going to be one busy day. The tracking on Dean shows coming in below Merida now, but anything can still happen. It is reported that hurricane winds of 145 mph now reach 60 miles outward. I would be on the right (not!) side of the storm even if below me. Right side, I ... read more

Saturday, August 18, 2007 I have now gone shopping and stocked up on things I feel I might need if we have to go for a week with no power in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. There is an abundance of canned and fresh food choices as well as those in cartons that do not need refrigeration until opened. There is no panic in stores for that last package of batteries or gallon of water. Dean, the hurricane, has strengthened. I am anxious for myself, Yucatecos, and all who may end up in his path. Being a newcomer and visitor to the area, a friend pointed out to me that the relative sense of calm I am observing in the wake of a massive hurricane threat is not simply a way of life and culture to these kind ... read more

Friday, August 17, 2007 Today I will go shopping for supplies for the impending storm and probable lack of services that it may cause. I have doubts that Merida, Yucatan, Mexico will let a hurricane impede their life like we do in the United States. I thought about this a lot last night. We, in the states, expect immediate service. Not so here. My experience in the Yucatan began in March, 2007. The following observations are limited to the city of Merida. 80% of the population under age 50 seem to have cell phones. Most are the pay by the minute cards rather than a service plan. My Mexican cell phone is on a pay card service. It does not appear that many have phones or computers in their homes. Washing machines and driers are not ... read more

We said goodbye to San Christobal at some ungodly hour of the morning, and set off for Palenque, the first of our Mayan ruins. The road was hilly, windy and full of speed bumps on the strangest stretches of road. Beside each was a group of children that would jump up and try to sell us coconuts, fruit, chewing gum etc. We stopped off for a swim at Agua Azul, and admired the waterfall at Misol-ha before arriving at the ruins at about 2pm. We decided to get a guide in order to understand the place a bit better. I´m not sure what we received was the standard speel or not, but it was interesting nonetheless. Our guide had a theory that the Mayans were really a mix of lots of different cultures - Chinese, Phoenecians, ... read more

It's very late for me but I've been on a mission. And not a good one. Both the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News have run stories today about the fact that Erin may be the first hurricane / system to hit Texas since 2003. Like Rita NEVER HAPPENED ! I'm pissed and have been emailing like crazy! Contact that I've used for Dallas is rabshire@dallasnews.com. Have to go to the Chronicle and just post a note to the SciGuy that wrote the article. They don't post email addresses. Gee, wonder why? And I've copied all the other local publications so that they could be just as furious as I am. What are we? Forgotten is what! Hope that everyone has gotten over the damage we suffered. These falsehoods just blows my mind though. And ... read more

and quit sending things to your email. But at least it's not cute (or not) jokes or chain type things..... Well, I've worked past my bedtime to download pictures from some emails sent to me and try to resize them. I don't really think it's the Spanish that inhibited the process this time, just complications. And after exhausting myself on that, I turned to see what YucatanLiving had going on. Read it please. Thank you, Khaki, for all the great info! http://yucatanliving.com/ is the website. In re-reading some articles, this one brought a smile to my face about driving around here. The Working Gringos write articles for the publication and this is one of theirs http:// www.yucatanliving.com/ yucatan-survivor/driving-in-yucatan.htm And in working on this little $%$^##^ computer to resize the pictures from my friend's new store (pictures ... read more

Keep an eye on Tropical Depression Four for your sakes and mine. Don't worry about me. We're in basically the same location across the same body of water. According to Wikipedia, Orange, Texas is located at latitude 30.6 N, longitude 93.4 W and Merida is 20.5 N, 89.3 W. Wikipedia didn't say, but I'm guessing that Orange is about 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico as a crow flies. Merida is 22 miles from the Gulf. Both are roughly 30 ft above sea level (though Wikipedia says the Golden Triangle rarely gets to that height). Merida doesn't have the large trees that Texas has, the homes and buildings (including my little apartment complex) here are built with steel and concrete, the city is sitting on limestone so water doesn't stand for long and I'm on ... read more
