hi all having a great time, weather fabulous. saw our first topless sunbathers yesterday and Steve don´t want to leave now. Renting a golf cart to wander all over the island. Our hotel is overlooking the beach and is wonderful. There was Carnivale in the streets and on the beach all day and into the night yesterday, very rowdy and lots of music. These brown people know how to party. Drinking lots of margarita´s and eating everything in site. Gotta keep walking or I´ll get gordita.... read more

I know it says this is about Chichén Itzá, but it´s also about Merida, so don´t feel like it got left out. So yesterday remember how I was supposed to go to that tamale party with the kids in my class? Yeah. Well, they didn´t show up to where we were supposed to meet. So I hung out with this girl Rachel instead. Oh, and a little Mayan man who first tried to sell me cigars and then noticed my necklace and talked to me for like an hour and a half about his traditions and being a mayan and stuff. It was basically awesome. I think what he does for a living is sell his Mayan experience to interested tourists, because he kept offering to take me to sites to do rituals together and stuff. ... read more

Do you guys know that? Wanna know WHY I love Bard? Because even though I´m in Mexico, I still have access to JSTOR and all the other wonderful things the Bard library offers. Why is that wonderful, you may ask? Because I don´t have to deal with the world´s most confusing library and I can do all my research online. Even in Spanish, because JSTOR has everything. Hallelujah! So I´m supposed to be doing researcht this weekend about the Tzotzil Maya of Chiapas, and (did I tell this story yet? Sorry if it´s a repeat.) I went to the library. First of all, they still use card catalogues, but whatever, I can deal. Secondly, they have this big, beautiful, gigantic library (see photo on my second entry), but only the first floor has books, there is ... read more

So, besides the copying thing which we already went over, classes here are weird. So, take the three classes I´ve been to so far. This is how they grade us: Contemporary Mayan Literature: You have to do a presentation and at the end, because the teacher doesn´t want to read 25 essays, you do a group essay that´s 7 pages. (What? Who does a GROUP ESSAY? How do you even grade that? Hmm....I think that Silvia deserves a B and Samantha deserves a C? Or does everyone get the same grade regardless of how much work they do? Or what? What is that?) Postclassic Mayan Archeology: Tests. Ok, no so weird. You still have to do a presentation on a reading. Half the readings for this class are in English. Guess what. For some reason, I, ... read more

I apologize if I don't get all the information in. I'm just writing this before class which is in 15 minutes. (Today is the second day of classes. Hopefully it goes better than the first.) So I got to my first class at 8 am yesterday morning. Of course everyone knew each other (they all take all their classes together, and they're in their last year, so they're all like best friends.) I was a little surprised at how small the class was--24 students. We all introduced ourselves and the teacher went over the syllabus. Since it's a 4 hour class, we also started working on some material. What surprised me the most was that all the students were talking to each other and playing on their cell phones and reading while the teacher was talking. ... read more

Hey...San Miguel was just what I needed . I was on overload for a bit ,so I spent my time there just hanging out.I confess I even left the Lonely Planet at the hostel when I went out !!I lucked out with the hostel I was staying in . Not only did I have an apartment but I had a BATHTUB! I also had a great owner who was happy to share information and help with travel arrangements . San Miguel de Allende has been a gringo enclave for many decades, since after the WW2 .. It is a pleasant town of cobbled streets and a zocolo jardin flanked by a church ,(the Paraquoia photo was in the last blog) and the homes of the silver barons of the 17th century. I am learning the history ... read more
