Ok, so just for the point of concluding this blog, I'd first like to tell anyone who doesn't already know that I didn't actually go to Guatemala. I lied about it because I was coming home early to surprise people. Anyway, being back in the states was pretty weird at first, what with getting used to English and everything. It was really strange to talk to people who worked places and hear English. The weirdest moment, though, was on the airplane back when the movie that was in English didn't have subtitles. I about died. Anyway, I miss Merida because it was beautiful and calm and simple. One thing I think I definitely learned from this trip is that you can't let your entire life be work. Work is meant to be there to support your ... read more

So, as you all know, Merida is hot. Yesterday was the hottest it´s been in 10 years and today was even hotter than that. Like, seriously, woah. Anyway, I´m going to Guatemala on Sunday! I´m SO excited! It´s gonna be totally awesome. I´m spending a week there. I´m leaving Sunday and coming back Friday, which gives me just enough time to pack and say goodbye to everyone before leaving again on Sunday. It should be totally awesome, because I´ll get to see a bunch of classic ruins and Tikal! Yay!!! It´s basically the most awesomest thing I´ve done in a while. Anyway, lately I´ve mostly been trying to get away from the heat. I spent yesterday in a cafe studying for a test and today I went to see Narnia. Really good. I want to marry ... read more

Ok, so the hottest it has EVER been in Merida (as rumor has it) is 44 degrees Celcius. Rumor also has it that yesterday it was 43 degrees. Do you know how hot that is? That´s ALMOST 110 F. Woah. Seriously. So given just that, I might have to argue that global warming is real. Cause, honestly, how can it be practically the hottest day Merida has ever had. I mean, it could obviously be a fluke hot streak, but no one seems to think so. I mean, I am just going based on rumor here. Though, since rumor has a PhD in zooarchaeology, I think I might be inclined to believe him. (Cause he´s smart, not cause he´s a meteorologist). Anyway, my expedition to the mall didn´t go as awesomely as planned. We got there ... read more

I swear. I´m like dying of sweating so much. Right now, it´s like 10 at night and 95 degrees with 52% humidity. SO HOT! Plus May is the hottest month. Anyway, tomorrow the high is 105.8. My friends and I decided to beat the heat by going shopping and spending the whole day in the (air-conditioned) mall and watching a movie and whatnot. It should be good. Anyway, things are going pretty good here, other than the heat. I only have two class sessions left. At some point we´re going to go to the beach again, also to beat the heat. Actually, I had a fairly bad day today, what with getting yelled at for crying, which of course made me cry more. No more on that story. Yesterday was the goodbye party at our director´s ... read more

They might be screwing me over again. Since I´m abroad they were supposed to send me an email about my housing preferences so that I could get a proxy for room draw. They never sent me such an email, so I realized I might need to just email them. I told Salena this, and she said that according to her packet, the last day to sign up for a proxy was Friday. Why do they INSIST on screwing me over? What am I supposed to do if I can´t get a room? What are my friends supposed to do if they can´t get a suite because I can´t participate in room draw? I´m really quite upset about this.... read more

Xpujil (pronounces Shpuheel) is the name of a town, not exactly that I was in the whole weekend (not exactly weekend, as it´s over and it´s only Saturday night. Yes, we came back way early, I´ll get to that), I stayed there last night, but mostly we were there to see Calakmul. That´s just not a choice on the list. Why not? I have no idea, cause it´s one of the four most important Classic Mayan sites. Probably because it´s in the middle of a nature reserve and 60 miles from the closest highway. Ridiculous. Taxi drivers in Xpujil are probably the best paid guys in town. Again, I´ll get to that. So, we left Merida on Wednesday evening and headed off to the city of Campeche, which I´ve already been to (remember, pedestrians have right ... read more

So on Friday I didn´t have class (Student´s day or something), so my teacher took us scuba diving (finally) inside a cenote. So we´re supposed to meet Memo at 8, but he doesn´t show up until 8:40. We weren´t really surprised, cause he´s always late, just more annoyed. Anyway, We drove for like an hour and a half to this town where he started driving all over the town looking for someone to lend him a pulley (seriously. Couldn´t he just own a pulley?) Anyway, after like an hour of that we got to the cenote and started getting ready. The cenote was basically a hole in the ground with a huge cave and water at the bottom. So we climbed down a super rickety old ladder (one of the rungs was out) and got into ... read more

So anyway, on Tuesday we woke up and got some bread from the bakery before grabbing the bus to UADY since I had two classes. We saw some of the people from my program, whom I introduced to Luke and went off to my boring classes while he heard about UADY from some of my classmates. After my class we went back downtown and ate at a high class vegetarian restaurant that's down there. We ended up switching meals because we each liked the other's better. Afterwards we went to the market and bought some really cheap fruit. We thought we'd try some of the native fruits, like Mamey and Zapote, but it turns out it's hard to find a ripe fruit that you don't know. Oh well. After that we took a little nap because ... read more

OK, so last Sunday I left my house at five am so I could take a 6 am bus to Cancun. It wasn´t the most exciting thing ever, you know, just a four and a half hour bus ride followed by a half hour one to the airport, but I was excited. When I got to the airport, Luke had already been waiting for fourty-five minutes (oops... I guess I should have taken the five am bus...), but the whole place was full of tour guides with their signs waiting for people, and when we saw each other we kissed, and everyone started wooing and clapping. It was awesome. Then we got right back on the bus I had just gotten off of and returned to the lovely bus station in Cancun, where we bought second ... read more

So, I just got back to Merida from my AWESOME trip to Chiapas. Chiapas, by the way, is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL place. There are mountains and it´s hilly and there are lots of trees and nature, probably due to the trees. So, let´s take it day by day. Day 1: Monday: Leaving Merida. We left on a 7:15 pm bus (it´s a 14 hour bus ride, and there´s a particular forest (where the zapatistas are) that you have to drive through during daylight, so they always leave Merida at night). So the bus was fine, except it was FREEZING. I swear, I don´t think I´ve been that cold since I got to Merida (not hard, since it doesn´t ever get below 65). But I had on a sweater and couldn´t sleep because I was so cold. ... read more
