Today I went on a trip organised by my hostel to see some Cenotes (sen-oh-tays) which are sink holes that are found in loads of places on the Yucatan Peninsular. The guide only spoke in Spanish, but I think he said that they were created years ago (maybe 2000? maybe not!) when there was a meteor crash. However, this may be completely wrong!

The cenotes were beautiful. They are kind of like underground caves with only light coming through in a few places. The water was clear and cool and there were lots of underwater stalagmites and stalactites. The first one we visited was 25m deep in places! There were tree roots which had broken through the cave roof and dangled down into the water. The snorkelling was wonderful, it was like being in another world.

There was one beam of light from above which looked really magical! There was no ladder to get into this one, you just had to jump in and then climb up a piece of rope to get out!
