Snorkling in sink holes

Today I went on a trip organised by my hostel to see some Cenotes (sen-oh-tays) which are sink holes that are found in loads of places on the Yucatan Peninsular. The guide only spoke in Spanish, but I think he said that they were created years ago (maybe 2000? maybe not!) when there was a meteor crash. However, this may be completely wrong!
