After a couple days of touring around in San Miguel with our good friend Urian, we decided to take a day trip to a city full of history, restaurants and shopping: Santiago de Querétaro. The city holds the same name as the state, and it is the state capital. It was a town that neither Ronnie nor I have ever been to and Urian was happy to join us for some place new. We got a late start in the morning as we couldn't decide which town to go to for a day trip, so by the time we got to the bus station it was already noon. The station was very clean and a lot nicer than I expected. My only real long-drive bus stations I have experienced was the Greyhound station in San Francisco, ... read more

Yesterday was my first day of classes and I an really excited about this semester! My first class of the day is a class on Spanish Literature which I know is going to be a little bit of a struggle for me. The readings that we have to do in this class are really hard, but I know that I can do well. My second class of the day is the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. History really isn't my favorite subject, but our professor is really nice and is willing to help us with anything and answer any of our questions. As the days progress, I can feel my Spanish getting better which I am really excited about. The first couple of days in Mexico were a little difficult because it was hard ... read more

It has been almost a week since I have arrived here in Queretaro, and so far it has been an interesting experience. On our first full day here in the city we had orientation for the university that we are attending : Monterrey Tec. They talked about our classes, some cultural differences that we might notice, and some general safety tips. The city of Queretaro itself, not the state, has about one million inhabitants, and is about four times the size of Lincoln. My host family is great, and so is my roommate! My host parents are probably in their mid sixties, their names are Socorro and Javier and they are some of the nicest people that I have ever met. Our host mom cooks all of our meals, and has them ready for us whenever ... read more

A lot of tourists think that Mexico is a city where you can go to the beach and party all night long. What some of them don't know is that Mexico has a lot of cities with a lot of history like Quéretaro, Querétaro. Located near the center of the country, this city is the most colonial in all Mexico. Rich in culture, and european architecture; this city mixes the old, historical enviorment with modern malls, tons of places to eat and dancing clubs to party all night long! It also counts with the mexican joy and appreciation for arts that you can find in the center of the city, where you can find art everywhere you look. Since free live music shows, to dancing demostrations, thatrical plays, museums without mentioning all of the art galleries ... read more

We arrived in Queretaro around 11 am and were considering continuing to Jalpan but it was 5 hours away and I (Rae) was suffering a dose of diarrhoea so we decided to stay put. We took a prepaid taxi from the bus terminal to Posada Aqueducto which was lovely and colourful. We got a king-size bed and a balcony for P$320 (US$30) a night. The lady at the hotel was all smiles and spoke slowly for us. The laundry guy down the road was equally friendly and helpful. And the tourist info guy was great. The whole town was full of warm people and we felt very relaxed there. After a cappuccino on the Plaza de Armas we visited the Casa de la Zacatecana where there were some lovely old ladies pointing the way around the ... read more

Hello avid readers! Sorry for such a delay between entries. I feel as if I have writer´s block. Maybe it´s because I hear Spanish all morning and then I have to switch into English. My mind just doesn´t seem very clear at the moment, so we´ll see what comes out! Ok, rewind. Last weekend I went to the historical city of Queretaro. It was about an hour´s bus ride from San Miguel. First, we stopped to see an enormous aqueduct. The legend behind it´s creation is very romantic! Supposedly, a man fell in love with a nun and asked her what she would ask for if she could have anything in the world. She asked for fresh water. Smart lady! Her convent was up on a hill and far away from any rivers. So he built ... read more

Leaving Mexico Our last week in Mexico was bitter sweet. The kids are ready to return. They miss there friends and want to be back in our home. I am sad, but also excited about our drive home. On Monday we agree on the departure date and set the weeks plans. We spend a lot of time talking about our time in Mexico and how we have all enjoyed the experience. Out last 3 days proved to be a bit rough. First, we planned to leave on Saturday morning. Wednesday morning I was working on the blog when suddenly, I started feeling pretty bad. My stomach was doing flips and in between flips it sounded like there were 6 foot swells. Within 30 minutes I was in bed feeling much like a person that has drank ... read more

On next stop was to Queretaro, which is approx. 1 hour from San Miguel de Allende. We decided to stay just one night in Queretaro, which was perfect timing because the night we stayed Mexico was playing. As you can see from one of the photos, it is a popular night to go out! The historic center of Queretaro is fairly compact, with andadores (pedestrian streets), linking a number of lively plazas, but in my opinion the main attraction it's acueducto/aqueduct outside of the center of the city. The acueducto, with 74 towering arches was built between 1726 and 1735 and still brings water to the center of the city from 12 km away. After walking around for part of the day, I realized one day and night is plenty in Queretaro. I enjoyed Guanajuato ... read more

Two weeks ago I had the coolest family reunion ever. First, my Dad came down to Mexico to visit me. We spent Thursday night in Cuernavaca and he got to meet my host mom, Celia, and her sister Lety. These are two of the most amazing women I have ever met. They are both divorced, with children who are grown and out of the house, and live together in a beautiful house in Cuernavaca. They rent the extra rooms out students, both Mexican and foreign, and have anywhere from four to eight students at a time. They are both beautiful women, inside and out. They are so happy, so full of life and adventure. I aspire to be like them when I'm their age. I think they made quite an impression on my Dad too. ... read more

Zimapan This weekend we decided it was time to venture into the Sierra Gorda mountain range. Along the northern edge of the state of Queretaro, are the Sierra Gordas. An amazing culmination of canyons, rivers, jungles, mountains and desert, it is an area profoundly effected by the forces of nature. The temperatures at the highest points (10,000 feet above sea level) can be below freezing, the deepest canyons (900 feet above sea level) can register temperatures of up to 110º F. At the upper elevations, the terrain is forested. At the lower elevations, it is tropical and hot, and the landscape is comprised of both rocky gorges and jungle vegetation. The driving in this part of the state of Querétaro is slow moving. The road through the Sierra Gorda winds and twists in such a way ... read more
