I am sorry for my 3 week absence -- I can’t believe it has been that long! I have a lot to report. My parents were here for a two weeks stay followed by a quick 4½ day visit with my brother. I will summarize some of the highlights from each week. Week #1 Four Cities in One Day! San Jose Iturbide - A small town with a very nice central square (it had some really pretty trees that had just bloomed with beautiful purple flowers). We walked around the central square, enjoyed the beautiful day and visited a small bread store for some sweet treats. We discovered a really neat little market. I have finally learned the trick to finding the “central square.” Just look for the tallest church in the city. Just like that ... read more

Thoughts about Mexico I have reached some conclusions about Mexico. First, I really like it here. The people here are very kindhearted and the culture differs greatly from the United States. People are much more willing to help and seem to feel very comfortable displaying their emotions. A few days ago, Haley went to a friend’s house to work on a school project. When it came time for me to retrieve her I became hopelessly lost. I ended up on a narrow dirt road leading to a large ranch. As I was turning the car around, the gate to the ranch swung open. A Mexican “cowboy” on a beautiful large white horse came riding out. It was dark now and my lights were shining directly on them - he did not seem bothered in the least. ... read more

This past week has been great. It has also been a week of reflection. I have come to a couple of conclusions. The first, people are people. Whether you are in Mexico or the United States, people are good, bad and in between. Fortunately, the vast majority of people choose to be good. I am constantly amazed at just how much good there is in Mexico. This week, I spent several days driving outside of Queretaro. Much of the time I was hopelessly lost. I must have asked for help (directions) 15 times last week. Without exception, the people I spoke to were kind and earnestly wanted to help. In fact one person jumped in the back seat and really saved the day. He directed us to our location and then jumped out! Yes, I gave ... read more

It has been almost two weeks since my last post -- sorry. A lot has happened. The first week of February was a very busy week. It was more about dealing with the reality of teaching than the adventures of Mexico. At the Technologico De Monterrey, grading is a little different than in the States. They follow a normal Semester pattern, yet they actually receive 4 grades during this time. Partial 1 (4 weeks), Partial 2 (4 weeks), Partial 3 (4 weeks), and the final grade (full 15 weeks). The grades for Partial 1 were due on 2-12-07. For most of last week, I was either preparing for MY test (Spanish) or grading my student’s tests & projects for the two classes that I teach. It is day 46 in Mexico and I am completely stuffed ... read more

Just 3 hours NW of Mexico city via scenic countryside is Queretaro state and city. This is 1/2 million as opposed to MC´s 20 million and makes quite a difference. It is the size of perhaps Omaha or Cincinnati but much more accessible. The hostel I´m staying at (The Red Girafe, don{t ask me why) is 20 beds instead of 200 and much quieter and laid back, with none of the constant noise and distraction of MC. The town center is all walkable with red-brick streets and parks every few blocks with landscaped trees and flowers and the ubiquitous fountain or statue in the center. It is so difficult to convey even in pics all the sights and the sounds and smells. Queretaro and Guanajuato states were hotbeds of dissent in the early 19th century and ... read more

So last night our little group had quite possibly one of the most cultural experiences of the whole trip. We went to La Lucha Libre. A rough Spanish translation = free fight. These are very popular in Mexico, sometimes underground. In my Spanish Civilization class we actually watched a little excerpt on the fights that tied them to indigenous roots. The theory is that the fights give the people a chance to escape reality and live in the fantastic realm that was so prevelant in the indigenous culture. I can see it to, the wrestlers as well as the audience seem to lose themselves in the heat of the moment... The arena is actually just three blocks away from Meghan and I´s house! Our host mother laughed at us when we told her our plans for ... read more

Our real host brother, Manuel, came to visit this weekend. He is a flight attendent in Mexico City and gets about 5 days off each month. So for the weekend, he and his boyfriend Sergio came to stay with us. It was fun to get to know our long lost brother. He introduced me to sushi for the first time. (Ironic that my first sushi experience was in Mexico...) He insisted that I use chopsticks, but offered me a fork after I completely dropped a piece of sushi in the soy sauce and mutilated it while trying to get it back out. I hung in there with the chopsticks though. Sunday morning we had gorditas for breakfast! Meghan and I have learned to roll with whatever comes our way, especially with food. Our saying when something ... read more

This entry started out as an entry about a ¨typical day¨for me during the week. I started writing it thinking the typical day would eventually materialize after about another week. Funnny that I even thought that. So intead I´ll tell you about a common denominator of every day, which is food. Everyday my roomate Meghan and I eat lunch at our host mother´s restaurant. We eat lunch after classes, which is usually around 3:00. The restaurant kinda of reminds me of a Mexican Franny´s (those of you SEK people know what I mean). Her food is always very good and she has a variety every day. Lunch is the largest meal of the day and always consists of three courses. The first is usually a soup or dish of pasta of some sort, or sometimes rice. ... read more

This last weekend is our student group´s last weekend that doesn´t have a trip planned in it. We took a lot of time soaking in things of Queretaro that we don´t usually have time to do during the week. Friday night, about seven of ¨the girls¨went out to dinner in the Centro (this is the same place where my fountain picture was taken). There are many restaurants that have seating outdoors and the scenery is amazing! Many people are out just to be out. There are musicians and people selling things in the streets. We all had some pretty traditional Mexican food, then walked down the street for some icecream! Later that night, our group split up for a bit. My roomate Meghan and I went out in search of a ¨posada¨, a weekend homework assignment ... read more
