Hello all!!! So a few interesting things have happened this week so I just thought I would take the time to share:) In my Spanish class this week we took a little trip to the public university in Morelia, La Michuacana, just to see some of the differences between public and private schooling here in Mexico. We met up with one of my profs old students named Enrique and he showed us all around the campus and told us all about the school. It was really interesting because he was telling me that most students that go there still live at home and that they dont really provide dorms. They do have some student housing but the students who live there have to sign a contract that they will protest and rally against the government for ... read more

Today is the end of my second week in Morelia! I have: Visited Tzintzuntzan, Patzcuaro, and Santa Clara. Patcuaro was hands-down my favorite, although the ruins at Tzin were so interesting too. Here is my daily/weekly routine: I wake up at 6:30, get dressed, and eat breakfast with my host mom: usually an omelet (huevos de jardin), fruit (sandilla, melon, o pina), and coffee (from Vera Cruz)! Then I catch the camion at 7:40 ish with some girls from my neighborhood (Nueva Chapultapec). The camion ride is a little long, I'm out of the habit of riding buses. We get to school and warm up in the sun til class starts at 8:30 (Spanish 399). I have a twenty minute break, and then its on to either Migration or Mexican Culture until 1pm. I am loving ... read more

Just a few more pics of my house here. Things are going really well. We went to the orphanage on Wednesday. Pretty poor, but not sad, because the kids have formed a pretty happy community together. I didn´t get to go inside however, so I don´t know what their rooms and stuff are like. I think we´re going to try and bring games and stuff next time, and maybe try and teach the older girls English, since that´s what they want from us. I went Salsa dancing the other night until about four in the morning. Super fun, live music, and awesome dancers. I didn´t know anything, but I learned a little of the basic steps. Then we went and watched the lighting of the cathedral that happens every Saturday night. There´s a beautiful firework ... read more

So this last weekend was pretty eventful!!! Friday night I went downtown to el centro with some girls from my group to take a historical tour of Morelia which was very interesting..We had this hilarious short and skinny Mexican guide who sounded like a commercial..but none the less it was very informative and interesting. There was one building that was a school and the man who founded it loved it so much and was so passionate about it that when he died he donated his heart to the school and it is still there on display...kinda gross..but interesting too! Saturday we got up really early and traveled to the neighboring cities (pueblos) if Tzintutzan, Patzcuaro, and Santa Clara. In Tzintutzan we got to explore some awesome ruins of an ancient Mexican culture, the Tarascans, and what ... read more

Hey everyone...the first week here felt like it took a long time because there was so much new input from every direction, but I really feel like I am settling in and pretty content, learning the city and already have some pretty good friends with the other students. No Mexican friends yet, but tonight I might go out with my host sister, so we´ll see. We went to el Centro the other day for a tour, and saw all these neat churches and old buildings that are now schools. One of the coolest parts, though, was afterwards when the girls and I went to this bar on the roof of a hotel overlooking the biggest cathedral in Morelia. It was nice to be out of the pollution, and at night the cathedral lit up and ... read more

Whelp, I´m here in Mexico. I arrived in Guadalajara at 6:30 in the morning on Saturday and had about 12 hours to wait before my shuttle to Morelia arrived, so I took a taxi to the city where my driver took me to a hotel barato (cheap), so I could stash my stuff and sleep a little. I think that I ended up being ripped off because of my ignorance, but I´m sure I´ll learn the ways of the country soon. I walked around Guadalajara a bit, but it was a huge city, very dirty with lots of people, and I wasn´t too interested in much that it had to offer. So I went back to the hotel, slept, and then ate some food before returning to the airport. Three other girls and I flew ... read more

We arrived in Morelia this afternoon, after a five hour bus ride from Mexico City. We took an "Exjectivo" bus which has snacks and movies, a bathroom, and comfortable seats. They showed Men in Black II, Pirates of the Carribean, and Spiderman 3....I watched out the window most of the time, but the young boyu acroos the aisle loved them! We found a small, but comfortable room in a small hotel, near the center of the colonial part of town. We walked to a vegetarian restauarant for a late lunch, and then to the aquaduct. On the way back, we visited a few churches and many pretty parks. We will stay here tomorrow and head out for Patzcaro on Wednesday.... read more

We spent the day walking around the city and visiting many Colonial buildings! We didn't carry the big guide book with us, so we spent some time circling around, looking for restauarants and museums we wanted to visit. It didn't help that one exhibit was in a building that had a different name than the one on the poster! Last night we went to what we thought was a concert, but instead was a lecture on a requiem...the music was on tape and the lecture, while in a beautiful chapel, was in rapid Spanish, so we left early. We had an early dinner tonight in a restauarant recommended by Sandra, Citlalli's mom....the meal was great..and setting was beautiful. We had thought to take a tour today, but realized that since the traffic is so bad, we ... read more
