Morelia is a state capital of pink stone. A UNESCO World Heritage Site we decided it was worth a visit and would be a great base to visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. We stayed in the lovely old Hotel Colonial, not far from the centre, where we had a balcony in a recently renovated room. We found the city beautiful and only a little cold feeling. We booked our trip to see the butterflies at a tourist info booth with a tourist police officer. First time for everything. It was a full day event and would cost P$600 each. We were picked up the next morning in a big Chevy van. We ended up with 11 adults and one child after being told it would be a max of 9 people. It was a 3 hour ... read more

The start of our last trip while in Mexico was to the state of Michoacan, which some consider it to be the most beautiful state. Our first stop was to the well-preserved capital, Morelia. The historic center of Morelia was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1991. Morelia is not overly touristy, which we can be a good thing because accomodations, tours, food, etc. is even less expensive. We didn't see or hear any other non-Spanish speaking tourists while in Morelia. It is a beautiful and very traquil city and well worth the time we spent. We left Chilpancingo in the morning for a 7 hour trip to Morelia, but instead of 7 hours it took us more than 11 hours. Needless to say, it was a very long and unexpected bus ride. To all my loyal travelblog fans I apologize! I have not updated in so long because the site has been down (most of my blogs were lost, now they are back YAY). I was sad. Also, school is nearing and end and things are getting hectic here. I have been writing essays up the wazoo and doing group presentations every week. Lots of work! The weekends have been amazing though. I have sooo many pictures and so much to say that the details and descriptions will not be able to say how awesome these last weekends. Three weekends ago, Tim came and visited me and we had some really fun adventures. After comida with my family (which was amazing chicken mole and uchepos-tamale like things that are sweet-) we took a bus out to Uruapan on ... read more

Midterms TOMORROW! Wish me luck. Last weekend I spent studying in Morelia but took a day trip to Patzcuaro and Janitzio. Patzcuaro used to be the capital of Michoacan and now it is a really cute town. The most fun thing was taking a boat out on a huge lake to the minitown of Janitzio. It is on a tiny island with a huge monument on top. Check out my pictures. They can speak more than I can now, since I have to go study for the 8 hours of tests to come in the next two days. ... read more

Hello out there in blog-land, Today´s entry includes tales of me being vintage Brett and of course getting myself in trouble by trying to be clever...so here goes. I´m sitting in Spanish class, which at the moment I do from 9 to 1. Starting tomorrow it will be 5 hours because I decided I needed an extra hour of personal tutoring in order to do some remedial Spanish work. So....I´m sitting in class yesterday and the teacher teaches us the verb ¨to lie.¨ In the previous lesson we´d learned career words, so I decided to put a whole sentence together with the words ¨to lie¨and ¨lawyer¨¨My sentence, using the past tense that we´d learned the previous lesson....went something like this. ¨Los abogados mentaron¨or...¨The lawyers lied.¨Good news, grammatically speaking...nice sentence. Shouldn´t she be happy that I ... read more

I decided to check out Morelia upon recomendation by a friend from Mexico City. My two nights there consisted of relaxing, walking around the city a bit and getting to know some really interesting people. Morelia is a city with amazing architecture and also has what many consider Mexico´s most beautiful church (see pictures). I met Felipe, Victor and Kurt- three gringo retirees who were chatting outside my room one night, who each ended up having some of the most amazing stories of anyone I had met so far. First there was Felipe- a retired San Antonio high school teacher that must have been about 6 foot 3 inches tall and about 250 lbs who had a long white Santa Claus like beard. Felipe now claims Morelia as his home and is like a dictionary on ... read more

This week has been crazy for me. I have so much I should be doing right now but I feel like a slacker for not posting in such a long time. Plus I want to share with everyone what an amazing weekend I had in Mauata. The beach we decided to visit is a virgin beach, meaning it has not been developed or comercialized at all. There are no hotels, just cabañas and hammocks to rent for the night. We spent the days swimming the ocean, flosting like mermaids and body surfing. The food that we ate was cooked by families in thier houses that also served as restaurants. Mostly only seafood, so I ate rice and beans. But when one of my buddies ordered an extra plate of shrimp, we saw one of the ... read more

Okay folks....the blog is back! When we last read about my adventures, I was half-way around the world experiencing China. For the next three weeks I will be south of the border in the Mexican city of Morelia. It is here that I am attempting to learn Spanish in preparation for graduate school study in International Relations. Before you snicker (some of you might already be doing so) I know I have had my share of cultural faux paux...but...well...okay this will probably be no different. First the disclaimer.... My blogs from the Middle Kingdom were on my own computer. This enabled me to spend more time with pictures, minimal spell check, and frankly recognize the keyboard. This time I am on a computer at the lanuage school, much slower, and lots of symbols I´m pretty ... read more

After a grueling first week of school I was really looking forward to the weekend. I had decided to take advantage of the fact that my brother was going to the coast for buisness and tag along to go spend the weekend in Lazaro Cardenas, a beach town about three hours away. Katie decided to join me and so did one of Edgars friends. The four of us left on Friday night, arriving in Lazaro at 10ish. On the drive over I got a good look at the country that I am in. Morelia is surrounded by mountains, shrouded in fog and blue from a distance. After passing the mountains we drove through the aread of Uruapan (famous for its exportation of avocados and marijuana) it was so muggy and hot during the drive we ... read more

Morelia is an easy place to belong. Although I still feel awkward when I am whistled at when I walk down the streets, I am feeling more at home here: For two days now, I have navigated the city by myself. Taking Combis (perviously misspelled convis) as public transportation and walking everywhere. On Tuesday afternoon each US student was assigned a Mexican student to tour them around the city. I ended up in a group with two other Americans and three Mexican guides. We were able to communicate with a blend of our language skills. I went into libraries where all the books are so old that they are behind glass and you cannot check them out. I saw the actual real heart of Melchor Ocampos (the George Washington of Morelia) in an exhibit in, ... read more
