Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Saludos! The winds are finally dying down here so the gringos are getting happier and the kiters are putting their equipment away for the year. The new Pemex station has opened and is having a big grand opening this weekend. Already folks are complaining that they are watering down the gas so as to make a bigger profit. There is another Pemex in town too and one of the locals who owns the big hotel here also owns the other older Pemex station and threatens her employees that if they use the new Pemex, they will be fired. Word is that [View Full Entry]

Monday we travelled to La Paz about 70 Miles north of here to attend the Carnaval which is a long awaited event each year for residents of the city. It marks the celebration occurring right before the season of Lent which begins tomorrow. This year the celebration of dance, music, food and costume began the 19th and closes on the 24 of February. Eight residents from Costa Brava hit the road early yesterday and stayed in a colonial style hotel just about 3 blocks from the event site. Although the hotel was not a luxury hotel by US standards, it was [View Full Entry]

After 2 weeks of going to school in La Paz, we were feeling a little overwhelmed with all that you need to know to learn Spanish. My French has been kicking into high gear- and the little that I learned through high school keeps surfacing. I keep trying to say things in French, thinking that it is another language so it must be spanish. Go figure! The first week of classes, the only other student with us was French, not speaking any English. That didn’t help me any! He kept using french words, which just added to my french repertoire. Luckily, [View Full Entry]

Hola, again from Los Barriles. The wind continues to blow, but I am not complaining as I know how much snow dropped last night in Michigan. Even more reason to come down......... I hired the guys here to install a walk in gate as well as a gate we can use to pull in the car here when we leave. Ridiculously slow, but I kept track of their hours and only paid by the hour. I think they were not happy, but I can't see paying a day's wage (6 hours, can you believe it) just because they are physically here [View Full Entry]

Not much new to report here. The big "drama" in the park is the structure being built on the front that is made out of steel. Everyone is up in arms b/c of the welding that is going on which poses a huge fire danger to the palapas. First the structure was way too high so they had to lower it. In the process of lowering the trusses, more welding along with more sparks. The owners on either side of this are very nervous as are most of the folks because it is so dry. One spark combined w/ the propane [View Full Entry]

Well, believe it or not I began writing a very long update about 3 days ago, and in the middle of it my internet card ran out and I lost the entire entry :( So, I'll try to get everyone up to speed. After my first week of cruising, we arrived in San Diego to get rid of the old guests and pick up the new ones. While I was on shore, I went shopping and got some new clothes that fit my strict dress-code requirements (pair of nice khakis and three polo shirts--aeropostal). I then spent the afternoon walking around, [View Full Entry]

Hope this finds all of you well on this Valentine's Day. I began my day with a Rotary Club sponsored "Run with you Hon" 5k walk here in Los Barriles. There were not as many participants as last year but almost all the residents of Costa Brava Park walked --none of us ran and were content to just walk and finish! Well, actually, three of us kind of took a shortcut so we would not have to be last to get served breakfast (included in the price to participate). Proceeds from the event go to helping the community here in Los [View Full Entry]

Finally - “the” Beach - Playa el Burro We woke up early - and suddenly by a hundred or so birds - pelicans, sea ducks and NOISY seagulls, feeding on little fish in schools along the shore - 20 feet or so from our palapa (that is a palm topped, open sided shelter from the sun). To be honest, I thought they were attacking the two food bags I had hung up on one of the palapa poles closest to the shore, it was so close. We totally relaxed into a lay about day. After Dainius took about 500 pictures of [View Full Entry]

Saludos, amigos! Nothing but sun and warmth to report from our paradise in the Baja. We know that Michigan is experiencing a bit of a warming trend too! Hope it remains, but...... Saturday I was again in La Paz in search of one of my neighbor's, Betty, little Yorkie, Rosie. Betty and her husband had been in La Paz for a doctor's appointment and then stayed at this B and B owned by another gringa, Linda. Apparently, when they arrived, they were talking and unpacking and I think that when they closed the parking gate in front of the B/B, Rosie [View Full Entry]

Another view of the Malecon in La Paz

Viscaino Desert then to San Ignacio We stayed 4 nights in Bahia de Tortugas. The second day we got invited by Jose to go out fishing again, this time in a small boat, but we declined and decided to ride right out to the end of the peninsula - just to have been there. It was about 35 km each way, with a side trip to another little beach on the way back. The desert is so beautiful. The third day we road a couple more of the dirt back roads around the bay, going to Malarimo on our own and [View Full Entry]
