Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

I know I already put up an Easter blog but this is the real deal! Ha! Ha! Today I went to the Sunrise Easter Service here on the beach. The service is sponsored by a non denominational church here by the name of Nueva Vida or New Life. The service started at 6.30 am and consisted of songs, a passage from the Bible and a message delivered by the pastor in both Spanish and English. Although it was a little cool this morning, it was a nice sunrise and I enjoyed the service. Mike has been hit by a flu bug [View Full Entry]

All the guys in the park here got feeling sorry for Mike because he has neither an ATV nor a boat. He has a couple of nice fishing poles but it is hard to fish without a boat. So last night he got home and found this beauty awaiting him. He now is really feeling like "one of the gringos of Costa Brava". He is looking forward to venturing out in his new boat! Saludos de los Barriles. The weather here has been very weird the last few weeks, still a lot of wind which has prevented me from kayaking but I guess the alternative of snow and rain is much worse so I don't complain. The fisherman are none too happy either. Our painter from last year, Rogelio, came by for a visit. He said that he had no work for three months and hopes for it to pick up with the coming fishing season. Gringo tourism is really down here as it is in many places so the locals are really hurting. Cabochick? Yeah that's me. What can I say. I know Cabo. I've been lucky enough to travel to this part of Mexico for over 30 years now. Los Cabos is located at the tip of the Baja pennisula, which is 'the Capes' for the espanol-challenged. The entire area includes two main towns called Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo connected by endless beaches and a fourlane highway called 'the Corridor'. For me, the town of San Jose del Cabo has always been a little oasis amongst parched dusty desert. Cue the music...and if you need a little help with [View Full Entry]

Gates to the Beach on the Sea of Cortez

Hola..............Mike's only question is " Who says a flatlander can't catch a fish in the Baja?" He is very proud of his white fish that he caught on Thursday. He went out with Bert, a great guy here in the park. They fished just down the way off the beach here in a deep hole about 300 feet . Bert had all the equipment and he was sure that they would have luck and they did. The guys got back, skinned and cleaned it and that is what we had for dinner! Fish tacos! Very scrumptious too. Can't get much fresher [View Full Entry]

Hammock time on the beach....

It has been awhile since I last entered a blog but things are still going well for us here. Bob and Joyce were here for about a week and we tried to "acclimate" them with cultural experiences so as to immerse them with an authentic "feel" for the Baja. They will be entering a "guest blog" here soon to relate their experiences. Before they got here, we were able to get our "gate" work finished up. Arturo stepped up the work when he realized that just "being in the park" for six hours did not net him six hours of wages [View Full Entry]

The Sea of Cortez is a great area for whale watching. The whales travel every year from Alaska down to Mexico, they love the Bay of Magdalena as they are a great feeding area. It is a well know calving area too. We drove up to Lopez Mateos to go on a whale watching trip. With memories of aching backs close at hand, we were happy to see that this excursion takes place inside a well protected bay. The panga’s as the boats are called take out 6 people at a time to see the grey whales. It was easy to [View Full Entry]

After a day of lying on the beach, Kendra felt well enough to start touring around. The first trip we took was to a beach called Ventana. It’s a know beach for windsurfing and kite boarding. There is a campground right on the beach , full of motor homes . All the people there have canvas “garages” full of sails and boards. All the people there were at least our age or older!!! Brave souls! A doctor we met here told us that kiteboarding is a very dangerous sport, with lots of people being dragged inadvertenly by their kites in a [View Full Entry]

While Mark is busy doing Spanish homework, I will take the opportunity to send a new update. We took a week off from Spanish lessons to tour the country when Kendra came to visit for a week with her boyfriend Scott. We picked them up at the San Jose/Cabo San Lucas airport and stayed for the night to tour the area. The next day, we took a trip out to see the Sea Lions and the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas. It was a great trip- the arch is pretty spectacular, and you can actually see two different bodies of [View Full Entry]
