Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Wednesday morning I headed out to La Paz with three gals from the park here and headed for what they call Segundas, which are second hand stores in quest of "stuff". Last year I had found this great "segunda" outside the airport in SJD and found some great buys.: an old recliner, a table and with the other gals in tow, we made out well with all of our purchases! However, it being a Monday, I think the segunda owners were not very eager to deal. Usually they are tired from the weekend and may have made enough over the weekend [View Full Entry]

Guerrero Negro to Bahia de Tortugas Date: ‘not sure, it was a week or so ago, and we are really starting to lose track of time - FINALLY!‘ We did go on a whale watching outing in a panga from Guerrero Negro. It was a little expensive, but so great to spend four hours on the water with the wind and sea spray kissing our faces. And we did see whales. None were breaching but they were impressive. It’s too bad all the pictures just look like big rough rocks in the water. I took a couple of teeny movies with [View Full Entry]

Here we are in La Paz , Mexico. WE arrived here via cruise ship, on the Celbrity Mercury- coming thru the Panama Canal. It was a great trip, lasting 12 days. We disembarked the ship 2 days early in order to come here to La Paz. The house we've rented is quite nice- much smaller than we had expected, but it' s just fine for us! Especially us boaters! ALl of the rooms exit to a courtyard, and the only connected rooms are the master bedroom and the bathroom. You have to go outside to get to any of the others. [View Full Entry]

The biggest news here is that the cattle are jumping over the cattle guard every evening and have eaten every bit of hibiscus in the park! The park dog, Oso, is very good at chasing them out. Today we didn't do much but went to the store in the nearby village of Buena Vista to try out their government store which tends to be a bit cheaper than the local grocery store which attracts the gringos and the locals who have more money. I like to buy things where the locals shop or on the street if at all possible. Anyway, [View Full Entry]

After the first day, we brainstormed on how to improve the efficiency of our clinic.  We tried to move around the staff to optimize their skill set but there were still a lot of challenges:  aggressive dogs that needed special care, owners that wanted something seen right away, the temperamental pressure cooker aka autoclave.  Our system worked well enough that we were able to accomplish about 60 + surgeries daily with other random surgical/medical tasks to do as well.  Mavia was helpful to assist in premedicating, providing water and shade for those waiting for surgery, recovery and TLC for t [View Full Entry]

Time at Punta Conejo has sadly drawn to a close. After a fantastic five weeks of fun in the sun. surfing, eating fresh fish and connecting with wonderful people, it was time for the crew to pack up camp and move on to the next destination. Thank you Roguer and chantelle for sharing this wonderful place with us. Chantelle now much more further along and Anja gaining inchs by the day, it was a time for much change. Now the crew is camped out on another beach, La Pastora about ten minutes drive outside Todos Santos and eagerly awaiting the arrival [View Full Entry]

Well, we are now official holders of driver's licenses in the state of Baja California del Sur! We did get up to the police station early and the place was abuzz b/c everyone was getting his/her licenses renewed. The camera was set up (see picture) and the screen on the wall (paper taped) was all ready. A ragged chair was set in front of the camera. It was all set up in such an inconvenient way in that the photo chair was directly in front of the desk of the lady to whom you needed to give information so there was [View Full Entry]

The next day our friend Misty came to pick us up as planned at 8:00am in her trusty old red pickup. We clambered in and headed for Animalandia picking up Nancy and Alex at the Desert Inn at the way. Animalandia is a clinic that was started by one of the locals Lucy, who has a tremendous heart and generous spirit. She had worked with an American veterinarian to start helping with spays and neuters of local animals and after funding from numerous donors and donation of the land by the town of Loreto, a clinic was built several years ago. Arrival in Loreto:  I headed out for Loreto early Sunday morning.  The only traveler from Spokane, I picked up two in Seattle, Mavia, a high school student who I've found has a fantastic attitude and teamworking approach, and Dr. Dana Bridges, an equine vet in Monroe Washington.  Arriving in LA, we picked up two more, Shelley a masters student in Atlanta, who plans to apply to vet school, and Tonia,  a licensed technician from San Francisco.  The flights all went very smoothly and we arrived in Loreto at 4:30.  Always a little worrisome to get the bags through customs, with the [View Full Entry]

Baja Day 1
Dinner at La Palapa
Dinner at La Palapa

WE are here, folks. All is well. We are almost settled in--things are in the areas that they should be but I have lots of "rearranging" to do. The steer were in on Sunday night and the residents here were out with their brooms guiding them out. However before they did that, they got my hibiscus again! There remain a couple of buds so there is some hope. The economy here is not much better and there are far fewer gringos here, for sure. We did go out to eat lunch at our favorite El Viejo on Saturday. Prices have gone [View Full Entry]
