Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Hello all. In following a reliable tradition of procrastination, I am posting my pictures, thoughts, descriptions, and stories of my fabulous journey to Mexico from which I returned oh, 3 months ago. I spent the most amazing 3 months of my life in the southern half of Baja California, Mexico backpacking, kayaking, and sailing. I'll not bore you with insane details (which I very well could, because I carried a journal and my mediocre journaling skills led my entries to be mainly chronological summaries of our days), but instead, I'll attempt to paint a picture of something that really cannot be [View Full Entry]

Hi all, here are some photos from my camera that Iīve been unable to upload until now, and some more from Robīs camera. We are in La Paz for our 2nd night after a 5 hour bus ride from Loreto. Weīve decided to forego travelling 6 hours return to see Cabo San Lucas as it looks very touristy and full of high end hotels and golf courses - not quite on our budget and seems a bit cheesy. Tomorrow morning we catch a bus to the ferry terminal at 5am, ouch. The ferry leaves for Topolobampo on the mainland at 8am [View Full Entry]

Well after trying to sound optimistic in the last blog, we were relieved to arrive in Guerrero Negro after 5.5 hours on the bus. We were quite gutted that after half an hour on the bus leaving San Quintin we saw a lovely little town, El Rosario, that we almost stayed in instead. But that was before we learnt to research our destinations a bit better. San Quintin wasnīt terrible but it wasnīt great either. If we managed to avoid the one horse towns before it then San Quintin was a two horse town. Really just a big dust bowl/service town. [View Full Entry]

Well here we are in Loreto after a 6 hour bus ride across the peninsula from Guerrero Negro. Weīve decided to stay here at least 2 nights because it is BEAUTIFUL. At last! We came through more spectacular desert and the view of the Sea of Cortez as we came down a windy road was incredible. This coast is much more beautiful and more blue than the parts of the Pacific coast we saw. Loreto is a lovely little colonial Spanish town. Itīs just gorgeous - full of colourful little Spanish style houses and with pretty paved streets with ficus archways. [View Full Entry]

Today was our play and relaxation day and time to get to know each other. It seemed that everyone slept well last night. We only had to turn the AC in one room that was especially hot. We left the doors and windows open in the house and had a pretty nice breeze. We found a bat in Dr Mikes shoe this morning. It very well could have been rabid since it was about to die. It died later in the day. There were a few other critters in and around the house including a couple scorpions. Its pretty much to [View Full Entry]

we are currently sitting in a little cafe in La Paz, sipping Pacificos and listening to late funky mexican pop music. life has been particularly sunny the past few days, a beautiful drive through the desert from el rosario to guerro negro...so many cacti...just everywhere. iīve spent time in deserts before, but never deserts with so much in them. highway 1 crosses back and forth across the baja, and our first experience with the sea of cortez was in the tiny town of mulege. a beautiful town that hasnīt become as touristy as many of the others in baja...it has an [View Full Entry]

Thanks again to all of you who were loyal blog readers throughout our adventures in the Baja of 08. We should be arriving home today and will NOT drive down ever again! What a long, LONG drive! It will be better to fly next time. We just won't have a car for awhile down there! But I do have my Baja bike and that will get me to the store and back! So here is my last entry about the Baja..........................Enjoy! As a side note, we decided that we should include a list of reasons why the Baja may not be [View Full Entry]

Well, it is just now a matter of days until we hit the road again and head home although each of us is dreading the trip! At least it will be less crowded in the truck on the way back. The last couple days I have spent doing a little painting, a lot of kayaking and walking on the beach and slowly packing up some things before we leave. Although we hope NOT to have a hurricane this summer, we are going to make plans for the worse case scenario! Rather than leave bed linens and towels in the closet, we [View Full Entry]
