Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

What a difference between the west and the east coast of the Baja! We left Guerrero Negro in full leather at barely 50F, crossed 200kms of Bajan desert with vast plains of not much to see really. But then, the minute we crossed the Volcan "Las Tres Virgenes", we hit a wall of heat and amazing beauty. Protected by the high peaks of "La Giganta", the east coast of the Baja is hot and superb! The Bahia Concepcion, a huge bay with green abnd blue waters and beaches that you dream of or see in the movies. Riding along the "Mar [View Full Entry]

Only a "suggestion" in Mexico!
Plenty of these along the roads
Gifts after gifts around the corner!

Very impressive the Baja! Not only by its sheer size. The variety of landscapes, often breathtaking, is simply amazing. 90% wild and protected (well, except from the Mexicans irresistible need to litter), we have been privileged to witness the wonderful gifts that nature and time have created.

"That's a cactus!"
Kilometers (really) of hot houses!

Would you like to go to Mexico with me? Who wouldn't say yes! I had been asked my mentor, veterinarian Dr. Kim. I had been working with her at the Golden Valley Humane Socitey for about a year thru a program in my high school. I was very excited to go to Cabo San Lucas and practice my Spanish and help some unwanted pets along the way. The day we arrived, it was hot. Coming from Minnesota, the temperature change was quite dramatic since we decided to go in November. It was beautiful. We drove (at about 100 mph) straight [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Mexico! Bienvenue au Mexique: Tourism permit: $21 US Temporary motorcycle import: $39 US Motorcycle insurance for 12 days: $79 US Toilet paper at the Tijuana border: 10 Pesos Crossing Tijuana in Mexican traffic... Priceless!! Our first near miss happens as we leave the border and this woman cuts me off... and stops! The Mexican round-abouts reminds me of the Paris ones: chacun pour soi! It got better from there on. Baja is superb! Majestic mountains, vast agricultural valleys where they grow lots including cactus?? Plenty of small villages along the #1 where the ric [View Full Entry]

Lunch in Ensenada

We just returned from another week long sea kayaking trip with the Mar y Adventuras located in La Paz, Baja CA Sur. This was Joe's fifth and my second Baja kayak trip with this company. This website describes this particular trip. http://www.kayakbaja.com/trips/baja.html Five years ago we went on their "Island Hopping" kayak trip, which focused a little more on seeing different cultural sites. Once again we opted to drive to Mexico and had no problems coming or going. Although we went through a total of 15 military checkpoints and our car was searched several times, the soldie [View Full Entry]

Our $30 Room in El Rosario (very nice)
Near Catavina
Beautiful Mulegé

Time to pack up, say good-bye to both new friends and old and to face reality of returning to our home in the good old U.S.A. This has been a good winter overall. The wind was more reluctant to lie down this winter but it finally did and it has been very hot the last couple of weeks. The waters have also become very warm but with the warmth come the "aguas malas" or jelly fish. On the surface of the water, they appear to be just bubbles but upon closer inspection you can see the blue hue. I guess the [View Full Entry]

A small restaurant here in Los Barriles

Today (27 April) a group of us hired the Awesome Cruiser to take us to Cerralvo Island which is north of Los Barriles near the city of La Paz. It is an uninhabited island and is 18 miles long and Mexico's ninth largest island. It is a considered a big fish game location and there is an abundance of Golden Grouper, Broadbill Swordfish, Marlin, Sailfish, and other game fish. We were hoping to find a lot of shells there but there were not as many as I had hoped but I did find some unusual ones. A friend I met here [View Full Entry]

The last couple of days have been pretty busy. On Thursday I went on another ATV adventure to Pescadero on the Road to No Where. The road is washboard dirt and rocks and is long and winding but is right on the ocean! The views are phenomenal! However, I didn't look too many times because I was concentrating on my driving the ATV. Pescadero is a small fishing village about 5 miles (??) from here. There is a lovely hotel that sits on a cliff that overlooks the Sea of Cortez. It is a very peaceful location. Probably the safest way [View Full Entry]

Uncrowded beach!
House on the Road to nowhere
More flowers

Today I went on my first ATV adventure down the arroyo to San Bartolo, a small village about 10 miles from Los Barriles. An arroyo is actually the Spanish word for creek but it is really a dry channel through which water flows intermittently and irregularly. These areas are public domain and the locals spend time in the arroyos having picnics and partying. During the rainy season, water does flow through the arroyos ,fills with water and drains off into the ocean. The Grand Canyon was probably an arroyo millions of years ago. The main means of transportation through an arroyo [View Full Entry]

I don't like to think that I will be leaving here as the time has just flown by! Seems that only yesterday we arrived and now it is almost time to go home. Well, as they say, "All good things must come to an end". I don't like it but I know that, God willing, we will be back next winter. This week was kind of a busy one for me as I went into La Paz on Wednesday to interpret for a couple here in the park. They were applying for a discount card for seniors and had to go [View Full Entry]
