Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

My name is Suzanne Coulson.  I am leading the World Vets trip to Baja Mexico.  We are heading to Loreto which is a ways down the peninsula.  The local population have founded a clinic called Animalandia www.animalandia.com where they try to limit the animal population by performing spays and neuters of the local dogs and cats whether they are strays or pets.  As our mission is also to endeavor to decrease the overpopulation of these animal, we have formed a great team.  We had one trip earlier in June 2008, see above blog entries, and brought 4 docs, several technicians and [View Full Entry]

Saturday I woke early to catch the 7:15 am bus to Chichen Itza. I was looking forward to a nice hot shower, but was upset to discover that the water wasn't working. I got ready without it, and tried out my spanish by complaining at the front desk and trying to get some of my money back (after all, I had paid for a room with a bathroom....). No luck though, the guy firgured that since the entire hotel didn't have water (not just my room), then I shouldn't get any money back. Slightly peeved (and smelly) I left and caught [View Full Entry]

Yes, Merry Christmas from Mexico! After some persuading, I agreed to K's suggestion that we travel to Baja California for the Christmas holiday. We went to Los Cabos, which comprises two towns 30km apart at the southern tip of the peninsula, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. It's almost 1,000 miles by road from San Diego so we didn't drive! Quiet We stayed in the old town of San Jose del Cabo, which is much quieter than Cabo San Lucas and mercifully free of timeshare touts. (Well, except for two Londoners we overheard at a restaurant on our last [View Full Entry]

La Ventana is a tiny hamlet in the south coast of Baja, 30 miles from La Paz, on the Sea of Cortes side of the peninsula and has become a kite-boarding enclave in the winter months. It is situated on a small bay with long stretch of sandy beach and ideal northernly sideshore wind. The beach is studded with kite school out-fittings, houses for rent and small scale resort like guest houses, catering to kite-boarders mainly and some to wind surfers. The surrounding scenery is spectacular. The beach is surrounded by a thick cactus forest that extends all the way to [View Full Entry]

Hello!‏ Here I am reporting from hot, sunny Mexico. On arrival in La Paz just over a week ago, I actually wasn't very well, and had to spend a day in bed sweating off my mysterious illness - nothing life-threatening, luckily!‏ That evening, I met my kayaking group for our briefing and the next day we set off on the speed boat for Isla Espiritu Santo, which is a totally undeveloped, volcanic island 18 miles away from the seaside town of La Paz, on the Baja California peninsula. The plan was to cicumnavigate it in our kayaks, camping on a different [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Hey hey, I thought I would dedicate a blog to Cabo San Lucas...officially my favourite Port of Call on the Disney Magic's Mexican Riviera run. Yay! If you get the chance in your life to visit Cabo San Lucas...DO IT! It is the most beautiful city and deserves to have lots and lots of visitors. I have decided to take a week long holiday in Cabo San Lucas at some point in my life so I can see it properly. It is truly awesome. Beautiful beaches, hospitable Mexicans, and happy people walking around saying "Ola" to random strangers (OK! That was [View Full Entry]
