Wednesday 4thOctober 2023 Havre St-Pierre, Canada Off the ship by 8.00am after sussing from the ship, that there wasn’t going to be a lot to do there!! Went to the Information Office and booked a rib boat trip for 4 hrs to the Archipel-de-Mingan National Park, that consists of 20 large islands and we could visit two of them!! This left us an hour and a half to visit the town! Started with the most boring looking church I have ever seen – hoped it would surprise us on the inside ……..it didn’t!! Bumped into Hong + Conor again who had explored everything and confirmed that there was nothing there!! Just houses and two shops on the harbour front, Chez Julies ( re-nouned for delicious seafood dishes!!) and a tourist shop!! Walked along the beach past ... read more

Day 2 - Sunday Ok, so, one of the reasons why I don't usually experience the nightlife when I travel for an iF3 competition is because you have to sleep sometime. 12 hours on your feet working the event and then 12 hours out partying at night would equal zero hours of sleep... and that would be brutal. That's almost what happened to me in Egypt two years ago. I was sleeping in the Uber, sleeping on the plane, sleeping every chance I got after a couple of late nights in Cairo. It was tough, and this time even more so. Chelly and I were up until about 3am. When we woke, it was time to get everyone fed, packed, and checked out of the AirBnB. So we ate our Indian leftovers for breakfast (Indian meal ... read more

Wednesday 27thSeptember 2023 Gaspe, Canada We weren’t arriving in Gaspe until about midday so we looked for whales!! It was a lovely sunny day, bit of a chilly wind but the run up to Gaspe from about 9.00am was fantastic! Views both sides – we could see Perces Rock with its arch quite clearly! AND there were loads of whales – well about eight I think Jan said!! Mostly humpback whales but there was a sighting of a Minke Whale as well. Actually saw the tail on a humpbacked whale as it made its dive down to deeper waters!! The scenery was amazing with cliffs, lighthouses, waterfalls and the trees were just starting to turn ( I have high hopes for Quebec!!) Gaspe is situated on the confluence of three salmon rivers, (Can’t remember what they ... read more

Thursday 28th September, Friday 29th September & Saturday 30thSeptember 2023 Montreal, Canada Two sea days and then a full day at Montreal!! On the Thursday we started on our trip down the St Lawrence River. Plenty of gannets on the river and a massive amount of little brown birds ( as well as a falcon!!) still on the ship that we had ‘picked up’ in Charlottetown to keep us entertained. Friday was the best whale watching day as we were passing the Saguenay River which is where fresh water meets sea water and it stirs up a lot of sediment which is where the whales feed. Most of the hump back whales had started their migration south, apart from a few stragglers that we saw along with a load (about 20!!) Minke Whale. Also saw massive ... read more

This Time Was Different Usually when I go to an iF3 event I am on my feet filming for at least 10-12 hours per day, talking to people, climbing over stuff, walking back and forth from end to end of a stadium, wandering around the athlete staging/warmup areas, and maybe trekking back-and-forth to the track or the pool. Add to that the time in the morning and at the end of the day spent charging batteries and offloading footage. This means in the nighttime there's scant time left to find whatever food spot is still open and have a nice, chill dinner with someone from one of the national federations or teams, then crash at my hotel for as much sleep as I can squeeze-in before getting up and doing it all again the next day. ... read more

20231001 To Jasper Park Lodge The day was glorious for being on a tour bus, looking down on the traffic. The true blue sky was a backdrop worthy of the gleaming snow on the mountains and the shining yellow leaves on the Trembling Aspens. The dark green deciduous trees set off the golden glow, only superseded by the even darker blue-green of the firs at the higher altitudes. In some places, recent snow sugared individual trees, reminiscent of a complex carpet pattern. Yet, some dark stony-grey steep mountain faces were stained with the deep yellow of late larches. Occasionally, deep turquoise lakes beamed through trees beside the highway. The Athabasca River , icy pale blue, trickled and flowed in the flats along the roadside. Only a mountain chill belied the sunny day. 20231002 Lac Beauvert Lac ... read more

Me & The iF3 I first found out about the International Functional Fitness Federation (iF3) in 2017 when they launched their organization dedicated to bringing the sport of Functional Fitness to the Olympic level, and held their first World Championships. There was a fundraiser and I pitched in. I didn't win the fan-wheel bike, but I was happy to help spread the word, and a seed was planted. In 2018, I decided to approach them about making a documentary. My friend James Fitzgerald at OPEX Fitness connected me to Gretchen Kittelberger, founder of the iF3, and we started talking. In 2019, the USA team brought me to Malmo, Sweden as their videographer and my documentary work for the iF3 began. I turned the footage from that trip into Reach For The Rings, my feature documentary about ... read more

North America » Canada » Prince Edward Island » Charlottetown September 27th 2023

Tuesday 26thSeptember 2023 Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Captain announced whilst we were at dinner last night, that the reason we were late leaving Port in Sydney yesterday, was because we had dragged up another anchor!! This caused lots of laughter in the restaurant as we had lost an anchor on the other side of the ship, in the hurricane!! (Apparently, we could still sail with one anchor because of the stabilisers on the ship!!) Anyway,we didn’t have high hopes for Charlottetown as Prince Edward Island (PEI) is said to be very flat and the only thing worth doing was Anne of Green Gables Museum (which we weren’t doing!!) as she was born in Cavendish on the north coast! Decided to just have a wander on the Historical Red Route (as advised by Tourist Info!!) and duly ... read more

Sunday 24th September 2023 at sea Monday 25th September 2023 - Sydney, Nova Scotia As it was, we left at 08.30 am and apart from a lecture in the morning about the Mi’kmaq indigenous people of Nova Scotia, didn’t do a lot else except whale watching, and sitting in the sun!! (making the most of it!!) Arrived in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia about 8.00am but had to wait for a tender until about 9.00am and the ride took about 20mins! There didn’t seem too much to do in Sydney itself and there were another 3 big cruise ships in Port, so we managed to find another couple (Hong + Connor!!) to share a taxi with us to do part of the Cabot Trail with us and also see the pretty town of Baddeck (Can ... read more

Thursday 21st September 2023 8.00hrs – Saturday 23rdSeptember 2023 19.00hrs St Johns, Newfoundland Boy was I glad to see land again, especially when we heard that some of the Bridge windows had smashed in the storm as well!! It seemed quite rough as we were approaching ‘The Narrows’ where we had a good view of Signal Hill and all the old houses that seemed to tumble down into the water, as well as the Cathedral and “The Rooms” high up on the hill!! ‘The Narrows’ is a small stretch of water that opens into the sheltered bay of St Johns. John Cabot discovered Newfoundland in 1497 and St John’s is the oldest Port in Canada but the first English fishing Captain to enter St Johns was ‘Admiral of the Harbour by Ancient Custom’ and Sir Humphrey ... read more
