If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

So I get the bus from Quebec, and head for New Brunswick. The countryside seems to be a grim rural wasteland, with snow and earth and industrial towns with names like St. Louis du Ha! Ha!, presumably named to offset the drab and dreary landscape. Or it could just have been the weather and the time of year - maybe it looks great in the summer, I don't know. At least we left the snow behind when we left Quebec. I arrive in Fredericton, where I am couchsurfing with Leah, who is having some of her friends over for dinner when [View Full Entry]

Here's some racing action from the summer. In the background Able Sail boats hit the course. Also in the background, the waterfront 400 metres from my new home.
It has been 6 months since returning home after the Water Adventure. Life has more or less returned to normal after a long, hard period of adjustment. I am once again becoming comfortable with the difficult business of everyday life. The stress of returning to work, dealing with pressing family issues, finances, moving into a new home and juggling extracurricular activities has begun to subside, and in the coming months I should be able to focus on kicking back and relaxing.....before planning the next big thing. In the meantime, this is the first of a few announcements coming up [View Full Entry]

So instead of writing all the minute details of every trip I take I think I'll make this more of a photo journal. Life as a student is hectic to say the least, so I'll post my photos and give some explanations here and there! Sound good? Great! My friend Aias and I wanted to do something fun for the fourth of July weekend this year. We originally thought of driving to Chicago, hear some good blues and explore the city. I had never been before so it sounded like a great plan. One night I got a message from him [View Full Entry]

Before anything is said - oh my god, canada is COLD. I wear everything i own and shiver, the locals are still wearing shorts whilst daring to mention the word 'mild' - and this is still the fall, first snow due 14th then onto -35 degrees! thank god i just landed back in NY! I didn't see a moose, and the handsome mounties must have been on vacation, but i didn't exactly go camping with the bears either (can you imagine!) Landed finally after several cancelled flights due to weather in the apple, the flight was fine, especially with my good [View Full Entry]

No hindsight for twenty twenty at this stage but so far this is what we anticipate in a naive and dreamlike at best Hollywood meets Outward bound scenario: Day one...Siem Reap to Beng Mela temple (or close) The mileage for day one has us a bit spooked. Sixty-five KM may not be all that long to some but we are thinking that we need to keep the mileage closer to a 40-50km/day range. We will spend what is left of the daylight seeing what was once a resting location for kings traveling from Angkor Wat to the Great Preah Khan. Dinner [View Full Entry]

Today, our last day in Vancouver, was a warm, sunny Sunday. We picnicked with Ally then spent the afternoon wandering around Stanley park capturing all the beautiful autumn colours as the sunset over the city. Last night was halloween so we followed tradition and carved some pumpkins, dressed up in gory outfits and bought the biggest, baddest box of fireworks we could find. The city was screaming with fireworks going off in every street, fire-truck sirens in the background and the wafting smell of gunpowder. It was a warm night so we had a few drinks, Anna (Ally's housemate) cooked us [View Full Entry]

So we left you after departing Fiji, we landed in LA about midday and wandered around the terminal until a guy approached us and asked us if we were looking for a hostel, he offered us a cheap room so off we went. It turns out "Mike" wasnt expecting to pick anyone up today so the 3 of us plus luggage had to cram into this guys convertible mercedes, not a bad way to arrive hey! anyway we pulled up at this [View Full Entry]

First impression: wow!
It's been a long time coming, but it's finally time to dust off the travel blog; engage the choke, give the pull-cord a couple tugs, give gas and fire 'er up! It's good to be unemployed again and looking forward to some amazing travels ahead! But first we thought we would throw down a little Sonora Blog to celebrate the last 6 months of employment in the rugged luxury known as Sonora Resort...(www.sonoraresort.com) After returning from Africa in January it was a lengthy interview process securing our positions at Sonroa Resort. But after many phone calls, a trip to Richmond and [View Full Entry]
