If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls

Most of know St Catherines as the wine region...but little did we know that amoungst the vines and intoxicating fruit are Pirates - LURKING - waiting to attack. Tuesday October 20th: Raiders of the Lost Boatyard attack Element Quest - the final duel before EQ set sail to head south. We have overcome so much in the past two years and once again we have kept afloat after the blitz of fanatical, raging ill-tempered boat yard juveniles. Bon Voyage...and now the adventure continues... [View Full Entry]

These photos are from two delightful towns in Ontario -- Smith Falls on the Rideau Canal and Perth. We visited an historic house in Perth, where the remainder of that 22,000 hunk of cheese resides (you were sent photos earlier). Here are some photos of a quilt for you who are into quilting and needlework and also a remarkable dollhouse. Smith Falls, in addition to being the chocolate capitol of Ontario, surrounds the middle of the Rideau Canal which runs from Ottawa (the 8 step locks, remember?) to Lake Ontario. If you enlarge the map slightly (you can double click on [View Full Entry]

Ontario is freakin' huge. What a difference a day makes. First of all, we actually got to sleep in today. What a relief that was since each of the two previous nights I only got a few hours. Combine that with the marathon drive to T-Bay the day before and I was dead tired. Sleeping in 'til 9 was a fantastic fix for that. As we hit the road the sun came out, melting the ice patches which formed on the truck the previous night. Thunder Bay didn't get hit as hard with the bad weather as did the Wawa area. First day on Via train 001 to Winnipeg and all I can say is holy SHIT, I woke up in a Christmas card. Violet sky, black lakes, snow, snow, snow... The train has an OBSERVATION BUBBLE, my new favourite place. My fellow travellers all seem hospitable despite their being wizened crazies. The train attendants remind me of Peter Sellers, each of them. Utterly despise my Hitachi piece of sh*t camera which refuses to do what I want it to (refuses to be a Canon). If Kian (old favourite camera) was here I'd be in heaven. As is, I'm becoming increasingly frustrated [View Full Entry]

My reason to come to Montreal was the INTERNATIONAL DIABETES FEDERATION world congress: I am proud to be a presenter and one of the 12,000 professionals attending it. The conference was enlightening! I enhanced my knowledge about the diabetes disease process and its management. On a personal note, I was delighted to play an active role in the congress. Through the presentations and discussions of my two research studies demonstrating positive outcome data and through my comments and remarks after workshops which instigated discussion, I was pleased with my little contribution to the wor [View Full Entry]

Packing the truck the night before we leave
Things got going the night of Tuesday the 20th. The bulk of that day was spent running last minute errands (read: buying a new iPod and closing an account at the 407 ETR office), and then through the afternoon and evening I finished packing the last of my gear. Val was at the house in Hockley from 4 pm onward to help with that, too. I can't believe that everything fits! The truck is definitely sitting pretty low in the back - particularly on the left hand side where the toolbox is sitting in the bed. Some others (mom) contend that [View Full Entry]

Travel is a gift all too often taken for granted. As members of the Western middle class, we have the social mobility to move in and out of new countries and cultures seamlessly, sometimes roughing it and living on spaghetti and tomato sauce for weeks on end. We are able to do so with knowledge that the social safety net of our background will usually prevent us from any real harm. Upon return home, we have faith that well paying jobs will be there, paying for our next escape. While owning a car and having a mortgage are often vilified by [View Full Entry]
