If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

in Moose Factory, where I am on site working.
Hi Everyone! I'm up near James Bay, a few hundred kilometers south east from Dave in Churchill! My work has taken me to this pretty little place on an island in the middle of the Moose River and just a boat ride away from Moosonee where my plane landed. The Moose River drains into the James Bay. The landscape is the Hudson's Bay Lowlands and muskeg forests. The island itself and the neighbouring islands are prone to erosion because of the sandy, silty ground. Many fossils are found up here, as is the odd diamond. The diamond mine, De Beers, is [View Full Entry]

Hi Guys, Good to hear from you all (???) Anyway, thought I'd write another blog and tell the tales of Canada. Let's start at my study, which will soon come to an end. Only 7 more days to go. Then, I'm done collecting data and it's time to analyze all the answers. A daunting task, and even though I'm curious, I'm not really looking forward to processing it all. I fear the maze of statistics, the feeling of being overwhelmed with numbers, alpha's, correlations and the 1000 different buttons that make up the SPSS statistical program. If you don't hear anything [View Full Entry]

So This is what it feels like to write a blog... I have to admit, I have a new found respect for people that write entertaining blogs. I've never been the type to keep a journal, or write down and share my thoughts or feelings, so this should be interesting. Anyway, world tour starts in 5 days - next time I write one of these hopefully I will have something entertaining to write. Over and out. [View Full Entry]

Curious bear

I was eyeing him up for a few minutes..
Greetings from a rainy Churchill! All the ice has gone again! The temperature rose and melted it all, so the bears are happy just to sit tight and wait a bit longer.. I was talking to a guy from Manitoba Conservation as well as a couple of the Parks Canada guides, and they were saying that a lot of the bears this year are still down close to the Manitoba/Ontario border and that they still have a lot of body mass so they don't seem to have the urge to migrate north? It's an interesting theory, and there may be [View Full Entry]

getting a closer look.

The history..... Earlier this year, after an exceptionally long and hot run, sitting on the kitchen floor, drinking water and trying to cool off, we started talking about how important water was to us and our ability to run. Well, that conversation, timed with a particular song, whose words include ‘Each day’s a gift and not a given right….If today was your last day….could you say goodbye to yesterday…’ reminded me of a comment I’d heard and experienced in Cambodia in Oct 2009. ‘Even though there is access to a lot of water, much of it is [View Full Entry]

A day that could not have been predicted…. All this, brings me to today, October 28. Another call with Ray to talk about logistics, training, mental strategies, food and all things that you worry about when you think about running a marathon a day for 6 days. More discussions about water capture and drilling technology, what might work in Cambodia, how to make this sustainable and things that would have never crossed my mind in the past. Ray, many, many thanks for all the help, insight, and support! Good luck to you and the team in Siberia! Just as I hung [View Full Entry]

Nat here.... Jeff told one part of the story. How do you describe in a few words a journey that began over a year ago, saw us log hundreds upon hundreds of hours running, walking and sometimes hobbling in all weather, from bogs to deserts, over rocks and through water in temperatures that would grill an egg or make you Walt Disney’s best cryogenic tank buddy should you stop moving for only a few minutes. We are the lucky ones. The kitchen discussion to Nickleback’s songs gave us the seed goal for the adventure, to bring one filter, to try and [View Full Entry]
