Last week I was in Dubai for Arap Lab exhibition. Actually before Dubai was somewhere I have been and I have not been. During the times I used to fly back and forth to Australia when I was studying, I had to stop in Dubai for transfer. I saw the city from the sky with all lights and skyscapers and even from that distance I could feel the wealth and luxury city had. This time I had chance to get out of the airport and feel the city. February is the coldest time in Dubai and one wonders how it is like in Summer if it is 20-25 C when it is coldest. From the time I got out of the plane most of the faces I saw around me were Indian, Pakistani and Philipino. Dubai ... read more

Rod, Jessie, James, Sascha and I headed off to the joys of the peanut butter jam on Friday night. The peanut butter jam is a gig where local bands get up and play their own songs for 1/2 hour sets. Rod's friend Mike was playing there that night so we all headed along to hear him play. The Peanut Butter jam is set on a rooftop of the Pyramids complex at Wafi City. And it is just amazing. You get to lie back, under the stars on bean bags, listening to live music. Really what could be better. Especially when the live music is so good. And mike and his friend were excellent. They were followed by a Gypsy Kings type band who weren't the greatest though. The peanut butter jam starts at about 8:30pm at ... read more

Dubai 8.2.08 - 11.2.08 Landing in Dubai airport was great it looked as though we were landing in the middle of the city. I have never seen so many lights, even when we touched down we had lights all around us. After the 20 hour flight a few people clapped as the wheels hit the tarmac. Getting off the plane and out of the airport was a breeze as there are no customs in Dubai. So soon we were out of the airport smelling the fresh sweet air, the weather was crisp similar to a Christchurch morning, but it soon heated up. We got to the Golden Sands apartment surprisingly quickly and safely considering we had a Schumacher as our shuttle driver. (Later learning that everyone here drives fast and often use the horn). First destination ... read more

How I have to start. I haven't got much time. Joeri and I had a bad sleepy night in Dubai. The flight was really great. The fly company belonging to a very rich arabian man, so that mean that you had everything in the plane. A TV for watching films, hearing musik and joining the flight with a camera on the bottom and in front of the plane, "so cool". The time changed to 3 hours later. So we arrived in Dubai at half past 11. The connecting flight will go at half past 8 to Uganda. (About 2 hours further). Dubai by night and from above was very shiny and when we went out of the plane the temperature was about 20 degrees. In the hall we discovered the toilettes (they have some kind of ... read more

We finally managed to go and see the flamingos on the weekend. We have been trying to go and visit them for an awfully long time but have never managed to actually get there for a number of reasons. However on Saturday we actually managed to get out of the house and in the car and drive to the sanctuary. At which point we found that the gate the sanctuary is padlocked and that to get into it you have to get a permit from the environmental department of Dubai Muncipality. So we ended up just taking these photos through the fence. However we did get to watch the flamingos from a distance and saw them flying around a little bit and that was amazing. The really are quite a strange bird when they are in ... read more

We went to the Krystal dinner show last night at Le Meridien, Mina Seyahi. The Krystal dinner show is held in a Speigel tent which is a traditional german tent (that I had never ever heard of before in my life). Apparently speigel tents used to travel around the different regions in Germany and would set up in a village for a month or so. The villagers would know that the tent was coming and would book all of their events, like weddings, in the tent for the month that it was here. So anyway they found this tent being used as a chicken house in Poland (or something similar) and bought it and it now travels around the world putting on the dinner show. The show itself was very interesting. Very very interesting. There were ... read more

Last Stop and last Blog come to that. We are now in Dubai and have had four good days exploring the city, we have been round the gold souks, had a boat trip on a dhow in Dubai Creek, been on a desert safari where we had a four wheel drive ride over the sand dunes - that was really hairy! Margaret had her eyes closed all during that experience - much easier jumping out of a plane than bumping over sand dunes. The high rise buildings are an amazing sight and the whole place seems so sparkly clean after the cities in India - it really is a complete contrast here. Buildings going up all the timne we have been told that 75% of all the cranes in the world are here in Dubai. We ... read more
