A relatively new tourist destination, Dubai has gained in popularity in recent years. It is essentially a desert city with superb infrastructure, liberal policies (by regional standards), and excellent tourist amenities. Just 5 hrs from Europe and 3 hrs from most parts of the Middle East, the Near East, and the sub-continent of India, Dubai makes a great short break for shopping, partying, sunbathing, fine dining, sporting events, and even a few sinful pleasures. It is a city of superlatives: for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest, Dubai is the destination. Wikitravel. I spent just 3 nights in Dubai, the most liberal of the Emirates in the UAE. The city was a huge change after 4 months in the Horn of Africa. I flew into the city via Djibouti and Sana'a in the Yemen. ... read more

... read more

- also Länder.

Arrived in Dubai @ 2.30am local time, the benifit of being an NZ citizen made it easy to pass thru customs and obtain a 60 Visa for UAE. Slept in today then have just had a look around Dubai - off to a local indian place for dinner, plenty of Ex-Pats here, lots to see and do - everything is just on a massive scale. The three star hotel I'm staying in has 6 night clubs attached, rooms are big and confortable, the exchange rate is good comming from NZ. Will spend a bit more time tommorrow checking out the sights, then head to Oman. today is wednesday , but is actually treated as a friday, with thursday and friday being the weekend, so plenty of people out on the town tonight!! off to dinner...... read more

Dubai - arrive 5:30am after a 7 hour flight from singapore. We have a connecting flight that is . . . . . 22 hours later. Death. Did i write that already in the last blog? i cant remember. Probably because it was 22 HOURS AGO!! Luckily we got to leave the airport (we actually got a 60 day visa so when supplies are running low we will come back here and stock up on their mega cheap duty free booze amongst other things) and caught a bus to their main city bit. It definately wasn't their upper class rich area that you sometimes see on Getaway (2nd plug in our blogs = looking for sponsorship from them) that we went to. Jess and I walked around in the boiling hot sun wearing heaps of clothes ... read more

I forgot to write that we are sitting next to an unattended bag. So, being alert and not alarmed, I cruised over to the cleaner and let him know. He kindly shrugged his shoulders and said go buy some duty free. We continued to sit next to it so we could get wireless internet and send you all that last email. Hope you appreciate it! We are outta here...................... ps no photos because jess' camera cord is in the checked in luggage. will post later... read more

6.00 am, Wednesday April 2nd 2008, Dubai Airport. It’s 4.00 am for me now and so far I’m doing pretty great considering I didn’t sleep much the night before I left and have purposely stayed awake on the flight into Dubai. Arrived here at 5.15 am and have spent the last 45 minutes or so walking the airport from end to end, or at least the part outside of customs. I tried getting some Dirham (yes, I too was surprised that my mirrors and beads were not an accepted currency here anymore) from the ATM but it said that my carrier was offline and wouldn’t give me any money. It was, however, a Barclay’s machine and I have an ABN-AMRO account so that might have something to do with it. Get over it already you pommie ... read more

I'm actually still in Australia but I'm unlikely to have time to update while in Dubai and I want the map filled in, so don't get scared and think that you've missed my departure already. I leave for the airport in approximately 1 hour. I'll update with photos once I get to the UK. Bye for now!... read more

We said goodbye to Kathryn before she left for work and tried (not very well to make it feel just like another day. However we did see Sonny before we left and he was able to take us to Nerang station where we caught the train direct to Brisbane Airport. After along and tiring 15 hours flying time our spirits were lifted as we saw the sun rise whilst we were landing at Dubai. After a short taxi ride to Seashell hotel, although it was 8.30 am we were able to check into our room. After a short rest we were determined to make the most of our 2 night stay,so we set out on foot to explore the city.We were amazed how many people (mostly men) were around and hardly any shops open. We then realized that friday ... read more
