Cold! The first thing that hit me as I got off the plane from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates was the cold air. It was fresh and moist and cold. We got off the plane and took a shuttle to the airport. I didn't have to fill anything out for customs and quickly got a $20 visa before exiting. There was no wait for the baggage. In fact, all around Turkish airlines was pretty good. Though, we left a bit late fromt the Abu Dhabi airport. The flight was supposed to leave at 2:45 AM, and I don't think we took off until about 3:30AM. We were supposed to arrive at 6:30AM (Istanbul is one hour behind Abu Dhabi), but actually arrived a little after 7AM. From the airport (out the front and a bit to ... read more

... read more

Its kinda funny that straight from Greece I went to Turkey.. :p but what an experience!!!! Turkey has been one of my fave countries so far (along w Japan and now - in hindsight - Morocco, in terms of surprising me with how much I like them, how friendly the people are, how good the food is and how beautiful they are as countries). They are definitely all places I would go back to and strongly recommend to everyone!! Turkey is the hub of world history (or at least one of them) … Any Greek reading this may resent such a statement, since Greek history is so influential on the modern Western World... this Greek history, along with other histories (most fascinating of which is the Persian Empire) can be found in modern-day Turkey... or as ... read more

3 veldıg spennende dager ı Istanbul og bydelen Sultanahmet. Her har Sultaner kost seg ı mange hundre aar. Startet litt enkelt paa dyr kınseısk restaurant. Vınkulturen ... read more

If I say I fell in love with Istanbul yesterday, I think now would be a good time to start sending out the Wedding invitations. Things between us are starting to get pretty serious. Not only does Istanbul have a charming, timeless beauty like so many ancient European cities, but it's architecture, culture and history make it stand out head over heels above ther rest. Our second and final day in Istanbul got off to an interesting start. Still jetlagged, we woke up late for a continental terrace level breakfast. While I don't have much good to say about the breakfast of mini pastries and sour orange juice, the hotel made up for it with its fabulous rooftop view. Observing the city from above gave me one more reason to fall madly in love. Towering turets, ... read more

Let me start by saying Europe never ceases to amaze me. It's been 10 years since I last visited Europe, but the wonderment that paralyzed me then still holds me hostage today as I stare out my hotel window at the lighted towering blue turets on the blue Mosque. Istanbul, Turkey..while not considered classically Europe (many classify it as a part of Asia or even Middle Eastern)...has me absolutley lovestruck, although I must admit it took a while to grow on me As with every cross continental trip, this one started with plenty of monotonous airports and plane flights. The journey started in a very cold, very snowy Saint Louis, Missouri. Icy roads, long lines and delayed flights made for a rough start. However, even amongst the long wait times, there managed to be a lot ... read more

I arrive at my B&B in Istanbul. I get a room on the ground floor. As a New Yorker, I don’t enjoy the ground floor all too much. Immediately I head out so I don’t have time to become a bum. It’s about a 10 minute walk into the main area…mainly uphill. The streets are old and the buildings seem run down. I got a manicure. YES, last one I had… I don’t even remember when. I know I had a pedicure while my mom was visiting. Anyhow, it’s been a while. I then went straight for the hamam. One of the oldest in Istanbul, I entered into a factory of crazy. It was what the pictures show – a roomful of 20 or so women lying across a huge round slab of stone to sweat. ... read more

Things I will remember most: The call to prayers from mosques surrounding our hotels and pretty much any place you are in the city; men washing outside the mosques before going in to pray; the old woman selling bird seed to feed the pigeons outside the 'new' mosque near the Spice Bazaar; the school children at the Dolmanache Palace; the chocolate pudding at Saray; the rice pudding at 'Saray'; view from the roof top terrace at night at Doy Doy restaurant; the kindnesses of all the staff at our hotel( www.stonehotelistanbul.com); the massiveness of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia; the fun of riding the tram; the bread, the bread, the bread!; the fishermen lined up along the Galata and Ataturk Bridges; the view from the Pierre Loti cafe'; the submarine, flying the Turkish ... read more

There is a reason why the Grand Bazaar is called Grand and not the Pretty Good Bazaar or the 'Shop Till You Drop' Bazaar ( although that is a pretty accurate portrayal). It is Grand in the sense of the Grand Canyon or the Grand Tetons - something so out of the ordinary that normal words can't quite describe it. First off it has over 4,000 shops in the enclosed corridors. But even before you go through the giant gates ( which in years past were closed each night for protection) you run through a gaunlet of shops approaching the Bazaar and then street sellers. It is all pretty dazzling and daunting. But one must keep a cool head and not listen to the siren songs of the salesmen who are trying to entice you to ... read more
