Normally the country you are travelling to for your holidays will be at the front of your mind for the week before you go. Instead all we could think about was Iceland. A country in the opposite direction to Turkey. Another unpronounceable volcano had erupted and there was literally a cloud hanging over our heads. An ash cloud. Luckily some south westerly (or was it north easterly) winds came and moved it along. It wasn’t until our plane had lifted off that we would believe it wasn’t going to play havoc with our journey. Speaking of journey’s, who was it that said “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey?! As most will admit, the worst part of travelling is the travel itself, which makes the above quote a bit redundant. I hate the journey. ... read more

I woke up at 4:30 to the sound of the morning prayers, which is quite soothing to me and was a wonderful way to wake up and start the day. Dad was still adjusting to the time change and was up shortly after as well. I was counting down the hours until I could eat the wonderful breakfast at the Apricot Hotel! Now that I had a chance to sample everything at the buffet I knew what I really wanted. I had received my birthday presents from my parents (I will be spending my birthday on the road with a tour, so Dad brought my presents with him)and I got a Netbook which I absolutely love (I thought I could do this trip without a computer but it proved to be very difficult) and a Bloggie. ... read more

Pronounced Beer-in-chee Goon – Translation : First Day I landed in Istanbul at 6:00 am local time after 23 hours of travel from Brisbane, with very little sleep (but that’s the price you pay for a cheap ticket!). After disembarking I went to find the Visa counter in which to buy my Turkish Visa. When I was researching for my trip I learned that only Australia and Turkey needed Visa’s from US citizens traveling there, I had also read about how to send off for Visa’s and that you needed to apply for with enough time so the Visa can get processed and you can have your passport back before you leave. I looked into the Australian one and found out that it was all done electronically and I didn’t need to send anything anywhere! (Yay ... read more

We left Cape Town with butterflies in our tummies but soon settled down on our wonderful flight flying Turkish Airways. The plane seemed brand spanking new with all the fruit. The tv's in front of us were touch screen, you could plug in your laptop and cell phones. AS for the food - it was better than many restaurants I have been to. Yes I am talking about airline food - there was nothing airline about it and we were sitting in economy. So we could not fault the flight but heck what was to come when we landed I was not prepared for. We had to queue for our visa and then we had to queue for immigration - I saw over 108 arms for landing bays and I think all were full with planes ... read more

Caught a local bus into Sultanamhet area of Istanbul. Wandered through the Beyazid Mosque, then the Grand Bazaar before heading down to see the Blue Mosque built in the 17th Century, and famous for the millions of blue tiles inside and the six minarets. Then walked passed the Haghia Sophia, the supreme church of Byzantium and over 1400 years old. Will visit inside when we return to Istanbul in 2 weeks, as we spent the rest of the day visiting the Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottaman Sultans for over 400 years. Built in 1459 as the new seat of government, it was also home to the Sultan's Harem, with up to 500 concubines living there. Magnificently tiled interiors are a feature, as well as the wealth of treasure and relics of the Empire.... read more

today me and dad visited two world famous mosques (blue mosque and aya sofya mosque/church) we both thought that the aya sofya was the best! after the mosques we decided to take a walk in the local park and have a small nap then we went back to the hostel for dinner and watch the liverpool last game of the season however we lost. whilst watching the game we ate lamb kebabs and met some really nice south africans (they supported man city = ). after dinner we took a long walk round the city but on the way back we went down some creepy dark allys and a wierd man followed us trying to sell us crappy old socks (100% cotton lol). ... read more

Arrived in Istanbul late this afternoon, population 15 million and the only city straddling 2 continents. Old capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (as Constantinople) until 1453 then the Ottaman Empire, now a city of mosques. Had a walk to Taksim square to stretch the legs and look at the shops near the hotel. Views from the hotel over the Golden Horn towards Sultanamhet.... read more

Shortly after midday yesterday I arrived safely in Istanbul, having slept through most of the flight. Fortuitously, an Australian who was on my flight was booked to stay at the same place as me (Bauhaus Guesthouse), so we helped each other find our way here. We checked in with an eccentric Turkish receptionist who's obsessed with the British TV series "The Only Way Is Essex", and who insisted on playing me several clips. After having checked in, the Australian and I went for a walk around the environs of the hostel. We're located in the Sultanahmet district, about halfway between the world-famous Blue Mosque and the straits separating this (European) side of the city from the Asian side, so there's a lot to see right on my doorstep. The city's really amazing, just as I'd imagined ... read more

I have had the most amazing few days... It all began on Wednesday 27th travelling from Ruse to Sofia (5 hours) to meet the other students for our coach to Istanbul. After long journey no.1 we went to Sofia Mall to chill out and eat before long journey no.2 at 11pm. We met the other 100+ students at Alexander Nevski Cathedral and got on our coach, taking stops ever few hours throughout the journey and arriving at the Bulgarian/Turkish border at 5am. It took forever to get our visas, paying £10 to get int country. We arrived in Istanbul at about 12:00 and went to our hotels (as there were so many students we were in two separate hotels). The hotel was very basic but I was just happy to have a comfortable bed instead of ... read more

Last truck drive to Istanbul, a final meal, and lots of sad farewells over the next few days as we all go our own ways. For me, it was back to Asia for a much appreciated stay with Julia and Julian in Kadikoy, a boat and a bus ride away from the touristy side of Istanbul. A double bed and room of my own was a complete luxury after Galipolli and Eceabat beach and it was good to catch up on sleep and laundry, and to briefly return to normal life! I watched the Royal Wedding on Friday accompanied by Pimms, afternoon tea, and strawberries in abundance. Although a bit touristed-out, I did manage to see Topkapi Palace, the Grand Baazar, the Spice Bazaar, the Basicalla Cisterns, and many mosques. (I did however manage to miss ... read more
