Today we toured ICMC. The International Catholic Migration Commission where Peter works as the Head of Affiliated Services. He showed us all the areas of the resettlement center and introduced us to his fellow workers. He then explained the process the immigrants must go through in order to qualify for resettlement in another country. It was very interesting and enlightening to realize what qualifications they must meet. It does make you stop to think how lucky you are to have been born in the USA. After our tour we went back to Zorlu Mall to meet one of Shannon's friends from her International Women's group for lunch. We had a delicious lunch.... (I had Lamb Chops) then headed home to think about the chore ahead. :-((((( packing!!!! That was all we did though. ....think about it! ... read more

Today was an easy day. We had breakfast at the Tribeca Restaurant and Lounge. Bagels, cream cheese, jam, omelette, pancakes and coffee. Sounds like home! The restaurant had photos of New York sites on the walls but the menu was in Turkish .... Try acting out the word onion.... We ended up with spinach on the omelette ....yummy anyway. After breakfast Peter dropped us off at the Sunday Market on the square along the Bosphorus. We went back to some of our favorite stalls.... Purchased a few more souvenirs, found a bead shop ( had been looking for one for weeks) and enjoyed the beautiful sunny day. All our usual friends were out.... The local cats, dogs and colorful people. We watched a beautiful bride and her groom being photographed along the waterfront. The Simit man ... read more

Today is May Day. A holiday in Istanbul. It was expected there would be some demonstrations around parts of the city today. The demonstrators began to gather early..... Labor Day..... The Labor Unions wanted to gather in Taksim Square to demonstrate but were blocked by police using tear gas, water cannons and Rubber Bullets. We saw police helicopters flying over the city and could hear blasts and see smoke..... It was far From us but we decided to stay close to home today. Shannon cooked a yummy smelling pot of Red Lentil Soup .....we went in to the little village of Ortakoy to the Thursday Market. We wandered up and down the rows of clothing, genuine fake hand bags, vegetable stands, spices, jewelry , scarves, and baked goods. We stopped for a grilled flat bread fried ... read more

Rain Today....can't complain. First rainy day of trip. Shannon drove us to visit the Metro city Mall. We enjoyed a cup of coffee and chocolate Brownie before wandering around to do a few errands and shop for groceries. Had a nice lunch an came home, Shannon is so brave to drive in this city....watch out when she and Peter are back driving in states.....wouldn't get in their way for awhile. Peter prepared us a delicious Pasta dinner ..... with salad, bread and wine. Watermelon and coffee. We are really getting spoiled.... read more

Abby and Luke back to school today. :-( Peter had day off so chauffeured us once again through the maize of streets and gnarled traffic to Emirgan Park ..... This beautiful park is the location of the famous Tulip Gardens. It was a wonderful spring day so we were not alone! The park was big enough for all.... We wandered leisurely through the tulips, topiary trees, public picnic areas, laughing school children and fun playgrounds. After sitting awhile watching the ships navigate the Bosphorus we visited the Museum . A drive along the shore of the Bosphorus to see the beautiful old wooden waterside villas , mosques and grander residences along the way led us to Rumeli Feneri, a lovely fishing Village on the point where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. We ate lunch at ... read more

Another rather slow start....we are still re-charging our E-bunny batteries. Breakfast, set off for a visit along the The Bosphorus, the straits separating Europe and Asia , which join the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The shores are lined with beautiful old buildings, wooden waterside villas, graceful mosques, market squares, and boats along the waterways. We are heading for the market area. Must take a moment to try to describe the bustling atmosphere of this area. The HILLS and narrow curving roads winding their way through the old neighborhoods of buildings stacked on top of each other are what you might imagine x 100! This makes the hills of San Francisco seem fit for ants. Amid these winding streets are local small businesses, corner cafés, small markets, fruit shops, flower shops, sleeping dogs, sunning ... read more

Day one in Istanbul started at noonish :-) with brunch at Ulus Cafe and Park. We enjoyed a Turkish mid-day meal of Bourek. A type of noodle casserole with cheeses and cream......stewed tomatoes with peppers and eggplant, fresh sliced cucumber, tomatoes , olives (black and green) :-))))) hard boiled eggs, sliced cheeses and salami type meats, fresh peppers, delicious breads .... Fresh apples, grapes, bananas, and Simit, a bagel type roll with toasted sesame seed and jam. Yummmm! After brunch we went outside to take pictures overlooking the Bosphorus, the waterway that divides the eastern and western sides of Istanbul. The views were amazing of the Asian side of Istanbul and the first bridge. Our staff photographer, Abby Vogelaar, took wonderful photos which will be featured in this and future blogs. After brunch we drove down the ... read more

The weather in my last day was not that perfect; I really wanted to take that Bosphorus Cruise but it was raining so I changed my plans. I went to Ortakoy Square but the mosque (it seems so pretty in pics) was in process of restoration, it is close to Bosphorus Bridge, so huge! Then i went to Dolmabahce Palace where I had to wait around 1 hour to get in, but It worths it. Another tip: If you don't have enoght time, it is better to take a tourist bus offering a quick visit to the main monuments, squares and mosques; Istanbul is a big city so it is necessary to walk a lot and sometimes there is no enough time. My last visit: Gran Bazar, but only the main stores, there is a lot ... read more
