Fırst day ın Cappadocıa. Bus arrıved ınto Urgup to the vıew of hot aır ballooons. Not takıng those cause they are sımply too costly for me. Anyway Cappadocıa ıs just so unıque. Caves. Faıry chımneys and houses cut ınto the rock. Very much lıke flınt stones and the houses have been there for ages. Many served as Rock churches as there was strong evıdence of chrıstıan mıgratıon ınto the area before the turks and the seljuks overtook the area. Never the less the place ıs so unreal. Everythıng ıs so brown. Went to the Goreme Open Aır museum. Haız have to be Open aır ın thıs super hot weather. So after the ruins it was time for a short break as told in my last message so I opted to go into the old Ottoman heartland... First stop Ankara! Ankara is quite expensive, but I met some cool Turkish students who walked around with me as I was sightseeing and later took me for dinner... Thanks Halil and Gokhan! After this I went to Safranbolu a town which has preserved all the old ottoman houses. The people were really friendly and laid back and I was whisked into many a shop, not to sell me stuff, no... For having a tea with me and strike up a conversation! Then on to Amasra on the Black Sea coast another laid back place... Than it was time for a two day trip to Sinop, not that I ... read more

The sun began to rise and I woke from my light bus-sleep. I stared out of the window, in a fairly comatose state after only a few hours of very uncomfortable sleep to see that the scenery had changed dramatically. We had arrived in Capadocia, right in the heart of Turkey and were surrounded by strange rock formations and tall, fallus-shaped stone towers protruding from the ground like giant mushrooms sprouting from the earth. We pulled into Goreme bus station at 8am and got a lift to the Shoestring Pension, where we had booked in to stay. After a glass of apple tea and a plate of Menamen (eggs, peppers and tomatoes cooked in an earthenware pot), we headed straight to bed and tried to correct our sleep debt from the previous night. We woke at ... read more

14th May HAPPY MOTHERS DAY MUM. Michael woke me at about 8:30 as he had to leave for his day tour, and I want to say that I really hate the morning thing. I gave him my email last night in drunkenness at the bar and he told me that we would catch up in Germany around the world cup but for the first time I felt like I could see straight though a guy and I knew that he was talking shit. As much as I would like to see him again, I am not really happy with myself as he does have a girlfriend and it wouldn’t really be best to see him again. I had to walk out quickly so not to get busted and I realised I only had 2L left which ... read more

Ah, I see from Rob's previous blog that I have been implicated as a partner in crime for the tardiness of our travel updates ("we" blew it??). To be fair, it hasn't always been due to someone procrastinating. 8 months sounds like a lot of time to be taking off but we are constantly amazed at how little time we have left at the end of the day for reading and writing when there are so many kilometres to be spanned, places to visit, people to see.........I can't explain. Internet availability and connections have also been patchy. I'm currently on a terminal in Kyrgyzstan (yay we made the border crossing with minimal fuss and in record time!) where I have been told the connection is "dial-up and Sputnik" so it's not exactly the fastest line nor ... read more

Hi. Travel update: I'm in Goreme sleeping in a cave here. After Pamukkale, I spent a night in Egirdir (this link has tons of awesome information about the place) and then took an extensive busride to Nevsehir where I was picked up by the hostel owner and driven to Goreme, where I'm typing this from. I'll be here several more days and don't know exactly what is next! More of a story: So last time I wrote you I was wading my way through the exotic calcium pools of Pamukkale with my Aussie friends. As it turned out, I got carried away using the Internet that day since I could finally download my pictures. I got a successful travelblog entry out of it but I lost my friends in the process. A crisis presented itself. Who ... read more

Ed: After trekking for two long days through Gallipoli, all I wanted was some sleep! Unfortunately, with a 6:30am flight to Kayseri, all we managed was to cram in five hours of slumber! Whaaah! We arrived at the domestic terminal at around 5:30am, and were met by these long queues. One thing you can say about the Turkish is that they are big on security (guess experience does count for something). They scan anything and everything you bring, including all luggage that you check-in through x-ray machines. So by the time we passed our third security scan, and with only 20 minutes to spare for our flight, it was time to start doing some pushing and shoving. Thankfully, we made our flight just in time (I fear one day I’m going to be typing ‘and we ... read more

Another early morning….another buffet breakfast!! Today we had a long drive across Turkey. We traveled for 12 hours. We had an interesting stop at Konya which is a city that has a lot of Middle Eastern investment. It is a very conservative place and it has the museum of the Whirling Dervishes This is an Islamic sect with a very interesting history. We arrived in Pamukkale quite late. The hotel we stayed in had hot springs so the kids had to have a swim in the warm water. They weren’t too impressed to find that it was muddy and gooy on the bottom. They are a bit soft! We went to a leather factory. They had a fashion parade. Harriet was one of the "Stars" of course. It had the desired effect as every couple/group purchased. ... read more

We went to an underground city…not too good if you suffer from claustrophobia. The tunnels and caves went forever..how these were built are still a mystery. They go on for many kms. We were to next experience the Goreme Valley where churches were built into the rocks and frescos adorned the walls. These were put there in the 6th Century. This was a fantastic day and photos can only really do it justice. The girls walked a million miles and we are sure that in time they will grasp the magnitude of what they have seen.
