What do print exhibitions , murals on the walls , the next City of Culture bid and Colin the Caterpillar have in common? On the face of it not a lot. However in our small city they seem to be the normal topics of conversation on a daily basis. It was around two years ago that we lost our opportunity to become City of Culture. In the past Derry , Hull and Coventry had won easily . But notice what is missing . Northern Ireland got their shout at it with a year of activities and the chance to raise the profile of the city . Two English cities Hull and Coventry got their chance with events running through the year . And then this year the contenders were Armagh in Ireland, the region of Bainbridge ... read more

We’ve had a couple recent cab drivers try to get us to pay with cash. Last night’s ride to the cooking class actually sat in the square waiting after we said we didn’t have enough euro. So, we gave him a 10 euro and 3 american dollars. That showed him! After class, the tour guide, Lisa, called a cab for us and told him that we would be using a card. No argument. Today, we used FreeNow, which is already tied to a card. No option. That worked well. Another nice train ride, taxi driver quite chatty (wanted cash but I prevailed). His mother-in-law's sister was married to an American sailor and lived in Virginia Beach for 20 years! Small world. Sunny here but very windy! Checked into our airbnb but our colds are getting worse ... read more

We both had colds and were exhausted from the Tour on Monday, so I went and got sandwiches and we took a day of rest. We had a class, Cooking in the Jewish Ghetto, scheduled in the evening. It was a great class--history of the Ghetto along with making pasta, stuffed zucchini flower. We made Pasta Amatriciana (a typical dish of Roman but originally from Amatrice, in the providence of Rieti; the basic ingredients are tomatoes, guanciale (salt-cured pork cheek,) pecorino romano cheese, and pepperoncini) cacio e pepe ((pronounced: kaa-chee-ow ee peh-pay) is made with just three ingredients: aged pecorino Romano cheese, freshly ground black pepper, and pasta). Then, the fun part—packing to head to Naples tomorrow!... read more

Egyszerre működő gazdaság és turisztikai ő... read more

Las Palmasban felkaptuk a kocsit, amivel a kovetkező két napot fogjuk beutazni a szigetet. A mai napot a sziget keleti es déli partjának felfedezésére szánjuk. A reptér alatt egy kis halászfaluban kezdtuk a napot, a sziklás parton eszegettunk kenyeret, sajtot. Onnan Maspalomas felé vettük az utat, ahol gyonyoru homokdunék között, selymes homokba... read more

A relatively short walk to Urris from the beach car park at Leenan to find the memorial at the site where a Wellington bomber crashed in 1941.. It was a sunny, but bitterly cold day. Perfect for a wee dander. I hadn't realised that there is a walking trail here before. There is actually a path from the military museum at Fort Dunree all the way to Leenan. A little section of a coastal path for Ireland. The trails do not go right up to the site. We went down into one little glen and stopped for a snack on the next rise. We thought the site was just past the next small glen. Fortunately Brendan explored around our picnic spot. Looking over the ridge and down towards the ocean he spotted the memorial about 200m ... read more

Slept in a bit Went to the Farmacia to get cough medicine and Sudafed for our colds. Took them while having a coffee and croissant for breakfast. Took taxi to Museums for tour to start at 10:30. Turns out the Sisteen Chapel is closed today until 1:00. The tour usually arrives there at 12:30 so the guide said she could take us to some of the halls we might not usually see. The carriage one was particularly interesting. We made it into the Chapel (with all the other tours that had been doing the same thing). Jam packed. Because Mike was about worn out from all the steps, the guard let us sit on a bench in the back, away from other folks. No pictures, of course. Then a lot more steps to get out. We ... read more

Today Renata and I headed into Central London to explore. We made our way to Platform 9 ¾ and discovered the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum. We ended our day going on the Harry Potter Studio Tour. Renata and I are fairly big Harry Potter fans. We named our cat after the titular character. So, we were excited to see where Harry Potter was filmed. On the tour, we saw various costumes, breathtaking sets and interesting props. We also tried our first taste of butter beer, which was delicious I must say. I could have spent all day at the Harry Potter Studio, but we were on a time limit and the night was getting dark. We had to head back to central London to take the train to Norbury back to our cousin Jean’s ... read more

We left on Thursday, December 31st in the evening and arrived in London the next day. We were staying with our cousin Jean for the next couple of days. On the first day, we meet our cousin Clifford from Mom’s side of the family and our Aunt Delphine and Uncle Willy from our Dad’s side of the family. The next day, we went over to our Uncle George's place for lunch and hung out with his daughters Evelyn and Shirley. Our granduncle George also has a caregiver who helps him with his daily activities when his daughters are not around. After visiting our Uncle George, we met one of Mom’s friends from her school days who had an amazing garden in her backyard. If only I could be that great of a gardener! The next day ... read more
