Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Well, it’s been 3 weeks since I was meant to be on that flight to Toronto with Anne & Denise and I’ve got to say that I’ve been surprised at how well I’ve coped with the disappointment of not going. This was probably down to the fact that I had postponed my flight to the 15th July and again had a date to focus on and look forward to. As I couldn’t change the destination of my flight, the plan was to fly to Toronto, stay 1 night and get a flight the next day to Ottawa to meet up with [View Full Entry]

Hay, things could be worse!

My best pondering pose!
My best pondering pose!
I know......I've had a lot of spare time on my hands.
Saturday came and went and I can’t believe that I am still in Wales, led on my sofa pondering. When will I get better? Did Anne & D make it to Toronto? Did they drink a toast to an absent friend on the plane? Did Denise go through with her idea to shave her head to save time when getting ready and to make her luggage weigh less by not carrying shampoo/conditioner and a hairdryer? (mad woman)! Did Anne go for the luggage with wheels or the classic backpack and more importantly did she fit everything in? Is Niagara Falls as [View Full Entry]

With less than a week to go, I have faced many dilemmas. · Whether to start watching Big Brother knowing that I won’t be able to see the whole series. · Whether to have malaria tablets with possible side effects of psychotic/suicidal thoughts or a skin rash that’s sensitive to sunlight. · But more seriously I have had to make a decision on whether to actually fly out on Saturday. My preparations have been seriously hampered by being ill for the past month and even though it looked like I was getting better last week, I’ve had a set back and [View Full Entry]

Planning and prep is well under way after it seemed that we were never going to book our flights! Following a couple of confusing visits to the travel agents we have settled on a departure date of 21st June from Heathrow to Toronto. If we’re lucky we’ll be reunited with our backpacks before setting off across Canada for 2 months. We’ll then spend a couple of weeks dodging hurricanes in Mexico and Costa Rica before starting our South American adventure through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. I’m sure we won’t be at all disappointed to lea [View Full Entry]

We travelled from Uyuni by train overnight on 24th/25th December and walked the 3 km from the train station to the bus station (quality town planning - not!) in Oruro in the early hours of the morning. After getting ourselves on a bus leaving a few hours later to Santa Cruz we enjoyed another overnighter (17hours) and arrived bleary eyed at Residencial Bolivar in the heart of an eerily quiet Santa Cruz. Rich went for a quick Christmas 5 minutes snooze and surfaced 7 hours later while San t [View Full Entry]

The big approach

‘I was sitting, waiting, wishing’ Ok, so I guess this is the beginning! Its Tuesday the 26th September which is one calendar month away from the big day. Beijing!!! Its crazy…… the defining moment of realisation today was something simple. Well there were three that stand out but to begin I would like to mention and put a big shout out to my first Larium tablet (the anti malarial pill). Its funny because I have so many issues, as my family would know, about taking any type of tablet for any reason!! Christ I worry about taking two paracetimol instead of [View Full Entry]

So behind my blogs that it seems to be a bit of a lost cause - however maybe if I make a little effort and spend bank holiday Sunday night on the computer you might slightly forgive me. Apologies also if your email is one of the 112 unread messages in my inbox (I am not kidding). Just chilling back in Essex - had a bit too much to drink last night, even got kicked out of a bar for being too drunk, and I was IN ESSEX!!! I must have been bad.
