Right folks. A history lesson set in stone - that is what the blurb told us on the leaflet we were issued with when we arrived at Chepstow Castle. Join me on the first of a journey through the first of many castles we will visit on our trip. Now I am going to sound like the commentator on the news who says "Look away now if you don't want to hear the football results". If you don't like castles - it is time to look away. For a few blogs at least. Matsuo Bashi wrote " The past remains hidden in clouds of memory". Certainly we agree as we are spending more and more time in the past and in those clouds of memory. Sorry for the delay, but we have been without internet for a couple of days! This day started fairly early as we had about an hour and forty-five minute drive (about 90 miles) into Chepstow, Wales. The weather was quite dreary when we left, but cleared up as we got closer to the castle. It was a nice day for a walk around. There were very few visitors except for the 2 busloads of youngsters (probably 7 through 9 years of age). They were very well behaved, but still very chatty. We tried to keep our distance from them most of the time. This was not difficult as the castle grounds are fairly large. After leaving the castle, we headed for Kingstone Brewery. We were not able to keep a good signal on our Google Maps, ... read more

Testing testing.. Just thought I'd try out how this blog thing works. I can't believe we've only got four days to go until we leave - it's come around so quickly! Getting very excited, especially since its just been drizzling in England for the last week. It'll be nice to see some sunshine! So today I'm doing my preliminary pack. I have everything I want to take on my bed... I don't think I can take half of it. Joe is in Sheffield at the moment and I'm back down south and its a little weird getting ready for our joint trip on my own but it makes leaving even more exciting as I get to see him again! OK - hopefully this works and everyone will be able to keep in touch and see what ... read more

June 28, 2008, Saturday Train from Chepstow to Cardiff The walk to Chepstow is about 11/2 miles, so off we go to catch the train at 9:27. Cardiff is the official capital of Wales since 1955. From the train station we found our way to the Cardiff Castle. This fortress hides insides the vast walled yard and follows the original fort built by the Romans. Long after the Romans left, the Normans invaded and made their additions, a mote, a keep, towers of domestic buildings, etc. However it was in the late nineteenth century that major changes were made by one of the richest men in the world, the third marquis. He commissioned, his friend, William Burges, an architect and decorator to overhaul everything. A lavish fortune was spent on this upgrade. the marquis and his ... read more

Minehead, Somerset, England to Chepstow, Wales Today we enter Wales! Up early, we were trying to avoid traffic on A 39, but I think we both are finally beginning to get used to driving on the left and the need to go slow and wait for larger vehicles to go ahead. This is the way things are done here. The Cardiff area is very busy this weekend--some sort of auto race, so we called the Info Center in Chepstow and Liz was mort helpful. She suggested a B & B that has a field for caravans (that is our name in the UK). So we travel to "Sedbury House B&B" outside Chepstow. Lovely people welcome us to the camp area behind the B&B, complete with electricity and bath facilities. We even get a map to the ... read more

Day 14 Chepstow- Abergavenny 29 miles (419) An early start to catch the train up to Chepstow meant that I was on the road by 9.15. After the initial pull up the hill out of Chepstow I followed the quiet B road out to Mynydd Bach where I turned on to minor roads through Shirenewton. A steady pull brought me up after about ten miles to the large Went Wood where the road skirtedthe northern edge of the wood. The bright sunny morning showed up the trees at their best and I had glimpses of fallow deer and also of hare in the fields. An exhilirating four mile decent brought me down into the small town of Usk where I stopped for a cuppa in the quiet main square. A gentle run following the Usk ... read more
