This was our class Xmas dinner at a very nice restaurant at Cardiff Bay called Porta Tunisia. We had hoped all MSc students would attend but many actually managed to come out yet it was extremely cold particularly on that night. Nonetheless, we had a great time and got the opportunity to mingle, socialize and make new friends within the group! A very worthwhile experience. I certainly looked forward to such a gathering because most of us never actually meet outside the class - and there's a lot to share especially since we come from different cultural and academic backgrounds.. The encounter was really enjoyable! The food extra-ordinarily divine!... read more

My 3rd weekend on the trot out of London, and I was supposed to be staying there now. But this event was pre planned a long time ago. Beth and I caught a coach to Cardiff on Thursday evening and were staying with our gracious host from home Laurence. We started our first rally day nice and early only to hit our first road block - the hire car place we had booked with wouldn't let us take a car without proof of address. Despite pleading and explaining we were from NZ they wouldn't have a bar of it so we walked to the nearest other places and managed to find a car at the 4th one! So it had begun. It was a long drive out to the stages from Cardiff but having not driven ... read more

Having just recovered from our weekend away in Paris (and my first week working in months) it was time to set off to Cardiff to watch the final game of the tour - AB's v Wales. This time we (me, Lou, and Mark) drove down and the good old Tom Tom lead us straight to the doors of our hotel in Cardiff. We then grabbed a taxi into town. The city centre streets were all closes and there were rugby fans everywhere. It seems that Wales enjoys its rugby as much as we do. There was almost a carnival like atmosphere and everyone was in high-spirits, including us after a beer or two :-) We met up with a few friends for a couple of pre-game beers and I was stunned to bump into a ... read more

Go the All Blacks!!! Clean Sweep of Europe :) The trip was pretty cool. I went with my Cousin who came back from France with us. But the day didn’t exactly start off too well. I had been out the night before for a “couple” (well that was the plan) and ended up having a fairly large night. So getting up at 7am to catch a 8:15am bus was none too pleasant. The London Tube lived up to its name and once again was delayed, so we made it only just in time. Sitting on the bus as we left London I was feeling seedy to say the least. Luckily our two tour guides we known to me so I was singled out for extra ribbings and mockery…..just what you need when your hungover. There was ... read more

On this trip I travelled to Cardiff with a colleague to set up Aussie Rules Wales. We had some very good meetings and I believe it will a great success. Time will tell. Train travel in the UK is ridiculously expensive. If you want to travel via train on the spur of the moment, forget about it, it will cost you an arm and leg. Thankfully there are other options. We travelled via Megabus to Cardiff from London, a journey of 3 hours as opposed to 2 hours via the train. Total cost for two people, including return trip to London, was £20. Absolute bargain! I am a big Dr. Who fan and, like many, spent a bit of time hiding behind the sofa when I was a kid. So I could not pass up the ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well I'm finally able to update things. It's been so long and I apologise for the long delay. Lots has happened and there's been lots to do and not enough cheap internet access around, or USB access or burning facilities. Anyway, let's begin......... From my last entry I'd been staying in Kent with some of Trevor's family and I was lucky enough to get a lift to Exeter in Devon. I stayed there for a week and kind of liked it but kind of didn't. So I went to Plymouth and after being told how awful it is by a number of Australians (never listen to other people when it comes to what's nice and what isn't) and I really like it there. I ended up staying there for 2 1/2 weeks and scored ... read more

Yes, i happened to arrive in cardiff the exact weekend of the mardi gras - very interesting start!! After checking in, I went to the hostel bar for a nice beer.
