It was a lovely day. After breakfast we went for a great walk around Melrose on the Tweed. We walked along the Tweed River. We went around the magnificent Abbey and saw the flowering gardens around town. Dave walked us to the beginning of the Camino de St. Cuthbert which I am sure we would have missed on our own. We saw the beautiful Melrose Church, Church of Scotland and had lunch. After lunch we drove through the countryside where we visited Bowden Kirk (Church) which we will be walking past tomorrow on the “Walk” and the old Melrose Abbey site dating to early 7th century, back home to a great salmon dinner. Tomorrow we start the walk. The forecast seems ok for less rain till Monday. Pray we get good weather. Cheers. ... read more

Terri had a restless night and waking early was packed “almost” before day break. We ate an awesome breakfast and took a walk around Asenby and Asenby ‘s lovers lane. What a nice hamlet in central north England. Tony and Jacqui drove us to Northallerton station to catch the train. We travelled through the country side with a bite and drink as my grandfather said “ going to beat the cars”. It was a pleasurable trip, very relaxing with 4 seats all to ourselves. We traveled past Holy Island on the English coast where our final destination will be for our walk ?and our good friend Dave will pick us up. We arrived at Tweedbank via Edinburgh where Dave picked us up and enjoyed a great risotto dinner with him. Inevitably conversations ended about the Camino ... read more

Jet Lag? We Don't Got No Stinkin' Jet Lag Up early and, if not bright, then at least with a little glow, we ate breakfast (full English of course!) at the hotel restaurant before taking everything out of our luggage and packing it back in so that we can leave most of the suitcases in the car for the next few days. Driving on the left was, again, second nature to Tony, and we fell back into our habits of Anne as Navigator, and Tony just trying to get into the correct lane to exit the roundabouts. Our first goal today was to head to Hadrian's Wall. Tony has wanted to see it since he was little and living in England. Michelle is interested in the Roman history surrounding it. Anne wants to go because walls ... read more

Blog 1 22 May 2019 Dear all – the travelling golfers are currently in Scotland enjoying cool sunny weather. Arrived in Edinburgh on 15th May. Picked up a hire car at Edinburgh Airport and drove straight to Crail Golf Course which is on the sea about 30 minutes from St Andrews. Had a nice round happening until we hit the tough Par 3’s and a few long Par 4’s on the back nine holes. That soon wrecked the scores and by then the sea mist was rolling in making it difficult to see the ball. It was an amazing course that had some quaint and interesting history attached to it. For example a cave where centuries ago Constantine was killed by the Vikings and a beach where a ship with the mother of Mary, Queen of ... read more

Went back home for a few weeks to stay with my folks and catch up with family. Had some cracking days walking in the hills in the beautiful border countryside. Trained for the Great Edinburgh 10K run. Got nowhere near my personal best but enjoyed the run - too many hills compared with the runs I did in Houston!... read more

We drove down to the Scottish borders today to visit a few abbeys. First we visited Jedburgh which is a lovely border town, when we arrived we went for lunch at the coffee corner which is a great wee spot to refuel before going to the Abbey. Jedburgh Abbey is a stunning building, the first church was built on the site at 830, then a bishop from Glasgow built the existing abbey in 1138, vaults, undercrofts and cellars were also built in the early 1200's within the grounds. Jedburgh Abbey had to endure four major attacks between 1409-1523 which destroyed most of the complex. Now there is much conservation work being done to keep the remaining buildings in tact and what is left standing is very beautiful to see. We also walked round the ruins of ... read more

Thursday 3.12.2009 Day 50 Kelso We woke up to it snowing out our window. It was sooo nice. We did not let the snow stop us from going out and exploring. We went to the town of Rutherford and Kelso and saw the Floors castle. The castle was originally built for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe, in 1721. The site for the building of Floors Castle is a natural terrace overlooking the River Tweed and facing the Cheviot Hills, the heartland of the family's Estate. It lies on the opposite river bank to Roxburgh Castle, once the strongest fortress along the former march with England. In 1721, William Adam was commissioned by the 1st Duke to make additions to the eastern end of an existing tower-house to create a plain, but symmetrical, Georgian country house. The ... read more

Hello All, So Kaitlyn and I took an Arcadia free trip down to the borders. Our bus made a stop at Traquair House, the town of Melrose and Roslyn Chapel all the while following the River Tweed. Traquair House is the oldest standing Catholic household on the main land of Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots and her baby son James stayed there, so did Bonnie Prince Charlie who the reason why the front gates of the house will never be opened again, at least until a Stuart once again sits on the English throne (unlikely that). All the furniture, knickknacks, and most importantly the harpsichord and tapestries are all authentic to the house and the Stuart-Maxwell family, that has lived in that house for over six hundred years. Not only does the house hold treasures beyond ... read more

We went down to the borders to pick up our new car! We were really lucky and had brilliant weather, but cold. Jedburgh has a really big Abbey that was built by King David in the 1100's to show England how tough Scotland was. Then the English trashed it. About three times.... read more
