Hiya Everyone, So after over a year, Ness and I were back in the air and traveling yet again. This time returning to Dublin in the Republic of Ireland and Belfast and Derry in NI. We went back specifically for our graduate program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution this time so we spent quite a bit of time in lecture at Queen's Uni and Uni of Ulster and going on educational tours, but we still had a great time outside of learning quite a bit. Here's our photos. Much Love, Kaitlyn... read more
So to Boulder Beach we went to see our lovely, awkward, tuxedoed friends. Some random penguins facts and observations: They can't fly. They mate for life. They don't just shuffle around in the snow. They often don't look where they're going when they swim, get stuck in the kelp and get very confused. You can't touch them at the beach - which includes when they start swimming at you - so you better backpedal quick before the park warden gets you! They love sunbathing and getting their pictures taken. --------------------- And nothing else to really say on that - just some adorable penguin photos. You know you love them!!! Love and hugs, Kaitlyn... read more
Greetings from the Bottom of the World to All and Sundry! I know...I know...this has been a long time in coming. As you have all made very obvious to me with your thinly veiled threats to my life. So here they are. May I introduce to you Hout Bay So these pictures are all of the place where our program advisors Andrea and Kevin Patrick live with their little son Ben and their huge Rhodesian Ridgeback Arno (who is actually a dog, not a small dinosaur like his size and name would suggests). They took us out to Hout Bay to go to our little Arcadia orientation in the beginning of the semester. Well first we went to the Africa Cafe in Cape Town where they serve traditional foods from all over Africa. Then Becky, Vanessa ... read more
And we land in South Africa, all be it a little late. Upon our arrival in Cape Town we were picked up with the other Stellenbosch students that had been on the plane with us, but of course Arcadia being what Arcadia is we had a completely different game plan than they did. It involved us (being Vanessa, Liz - another Arcadia study abroader, and I) getting into a sketchy white van with some Afrikaner student who didn't speak English all that well, being driven in the dark through the outskirts of Cape Town and dropped off in the neighborhood of Observatory. All the while having no idea what was going on until we got there and were greeted by Alex (who's a full year study abroad at the University of Western Cape) who got us ... read more
Our First Blog Entry from this Adventure! Greetings everyone, so Kaitlyn and I are safe and sound Stellenbosch South Africa but the journey here was a little longer then expected. It started out fine with a night at my Aunt Ruthie's and Uncle Steve's in Newark NJ. The next morning we found that a few inches of snow had fallen and it was COLD out. But we made it to JFK International with plenty of time to spare. We had a two hour layover in Senegal after our seven hour flight. The landing was ruff, but I have experienced worse and thought nothing of it. As the crew changed we all dosed off, it was about four in the morning. So we taxi on the landing strip/runway and sat for a few hours because, as our ... read more
Adventures formally known as: Welcome to Dublin. What the F**K is that!: Where are all the Irish people at? and-- Give some magic tits, Christmas? Sláinte chugat! So Kaitlyn ad I flew over to Dublin in order to start our Ireland adventure, an adventure it was. We landed around seven and were greeted by this strange half completed structure that looked a little- well sketch. We have traveled enough to realize that every airport basically the same, you are not going to walk out and be greeted by a quaint Irish village but, what we later found out would be a new terminal, was a little off putting. So to make a long and cold story short, we missed our free transport bus (they changed their pick up times and failed to inform anyone) but we ... read more
Otherwise known as... The Flat Saturday Agreement... The Red Black Hack Tour... And... Are You Sure We Aren't In Gaza? Hiya everyone, So our second full day on that Green Isle that floats off to the left of our home away from home in Edinburgh brought us to the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland, which, for those of you who don't know, is still a part of the United Kingdom even though Ireland itself has been an independent nation since the 1920s. I'll explain a bit of the conflict history a bit further down for now I think I'll explain the lead of to the first of our secondary titles for the day. We left Dublin bright and early in the morning, though in actuality the sun hadn't even come up yet as it was ... read more
Hello All, So Kaitlyn and I took an Arcadia free trip down to the borders. Our bus made a stop at Traquair House, the town of Melrose and Roslyn Chapel all the while following the River Tweed. Traquair House is the oldest standing Catholic household on the main land of Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots and her baby son James stayed there, so did Bonnie Prince Charlie who the reason why the front gates of the house will never be opened again, at least until a Stuart once again sits on the English throne (unlikely that). All the furniture, knickknacks, and most importantly the harpsichord and tapestries are all authentic to the house and the Stuart-Maxwell family, that has lived in that house for over six hundred years. Not only does the house hold treasures beyond ... read more
So this one is less of an actual post and more of a picture receptacle. Nessa and I took a wander up to the top of Arthur again because we wanted to see over the city at sunset. The other ones are just pictures of Jack's office at Holyrood where I work. Up soon...The Scottish Borders...Dublin...and a flat tire...I mean Belfast. Yours, Kaitlyn... read more
Hiya! So, following my sister's request for pictures of absolutely anything, especially the most mundane aspects of daily life here, Vanessa and I made the 5 mile hike down the the Firth of Forth snapping pictures of all and sundry types of mundane things - most of which we see every day and never even take a second glance at anymore. So that's what is being bestowed upon you today - everyday usual old Edinburgh. It was an absolutely gorgeous day by the way - in Scotland standards for the middle of November that is, about 50, cloudy and windy as anything. Yeah, so not really much else to say, except enjoy the pictures of our two hour excursion across old town and into suburban Edinburgh. Love as always, Kaitlyn... read more
