Last weekend was the final round of matches in the Apertura Season and I went to the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona in the La Paternal Barrio to see the Argentinos Juniors v Newell's game. Argentinos was Diego's first profesional club and his prescence is everywhere in and around the stadium. Argentinos were originally founded as the 'Martyrs of Chicago' in homage to the anarchists that were imprisoned or hanged following the haymarket riot in Chicago in 1886. The clubs ability to produce world class players such as Maradona, Riquelme, Redondo, Julio Arca, Coloccini and Cambiasso has seen them been given the nickname 'El Semillero' (the seed garden). Argentinos have not had the best of seasons and in the week leading up to the game some local newspapes had reported that the Bravas had been threatening the ... read more

On Sunday I travelled to the Estadio Islas Malvinas (no not The Falklands!) in the Floresta barrio of Buenos Aires to see the All Boys v Velez Sarsfield match. Going into the match All Boys were in 14th positon whilst Velez were joint top with 3 games left. All Boys is one of the smaller clubs in the city about the same size as Argentinos Juniors. Its less intense at these smaller clubs although we still got held back for an hour after the kick off to give the Velez fans time to disperse. After an even first half with few chances, All Boys stepped it up in the second half and missed a hatful of chances including hitting the bar twice. They were made to pay for these misses with Velez scoring 2 late goals ... read more

On Sunday night it was off to the Liniers Barrio to catch the Velez Sarsfield v Boca match. Velez were top of the league by 3 points with 4 games left to play. I went with a few guys from the Spanish school led by one of the teachers who is a big Velez fan. It was really easy to get tickets - we just arrived at the stadium a couple of hours before kick off and went to the ticket booth. It was 12US$ for a ticket, not bad for a top of the league clash. We left at 4 and got back at midnight and thats without any pre or post match beers! This was my first experience of standing in the popular section (the area behind the goal) and I have to admit ... read more

Bienvenidos a Buenos Aires! OK enough of the travel stuff. I mentioned to a few of you I was hoping to attend as many football games as possible whilst I'm here and give the blog more of a football slant (which was well recieved). There are six primera division teams in Buenos Aires itself - Boca, River, Argentinos Juniors, Velez Sarsfield, San Lorenzo, All Boys and another six in the Greater Buenos Aires province - Quilmes, Tigre, Independiente, Racing Club, Lanus and Estudiantes - so should be able to get to a few games! In Argentina there are two seasons during the year, the Apertura (final) and the Clausura (inicial). The Apertura season is well underway now with 14 of the 19 rounds completed. Velez Sarsfield currently lead the way. On Sunday I attended my first ... read more

I made a side trip to Harpers Ferry, the famous historical town on the confluence of the Shenadoah and Potomac rivers. Its a fantastic place to visit and really is like a trip into the past. I then drove down through the Shenadoah Valley and did some hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Also visited some places I have to admit I'd never heard of before such as Harrisonburg and Winchester. I was heavily reliant on the old GPS! Some chat on Harper's Ferry below (sorry I have run out of time!). Next stop Buenos Aires. ... read more

Whilst in the DC are I spent some time touring the nearby civil war battlefield sites such as Gettysburg, Antietam Creek, First Bull Run and Fredricksburg. All these sites are national parks and have been extremeley well preserved. You can do self-guided tours of the battlefields by car or foot or even run the trails if you want. Ended up spending at least half a day at each (think Gettysburg took me 6 hours to get round). A very insightful and humbling trip and my knowledge of the civil war has improved a lot... read more

Despite living in the US for 7 years I never once made it to the nations capital! Although managed to visit Vegas 6 times - what does that tell us!). I decided to put the record straight and stopped off for a couple of days on route to Houston. Its a great city to walk around and easy to see all the sights.... read more

As part of my time-off I was hoping to see my team Hearts play in some exotic part of Europe. Who did we get drawn against? Only Liverpool! Turned out it was a great trip and was good to visit the famous Anfield. I managed to snag a ticket from some dodgy website which amazingly was waiting for me at my slightly sketchy hotel! With the aggregate score at 1-0 for Liverpool and 0-0 on the night an incredible thing happened....we scored!... read more

Went back home for a few weeks to stay with my folks and catch up with family. Had some cracking days walking in the hills in the beautiful border countryside. Trained for the Great Edinburgh 10K run. Got nowhere near my personal best but enjoyed the run - too many hills compared with the runs I did in Houston!... read more

Stopped off in Copenhagen on my way back to Scotland. Very expensive - 6 euros for a pint - but a beautiful city and very friendly people. The people all seem very happy here and everyone seems to behave themselves! The highlights of this visit were the Danish resistance museum, the harbour (Nordhaven) and the local beer (even if it was expensive). Oh and yes I did see the pesky mermaid!... read more
