We have completed a circle and are now back on our second home, the place where we met, lived for many years and where Ella was born. Even though I really liked being in Spain and closer to my family, I am very happy to be back here, as I feel like I developed as a person here and it's the place where my real life happened. We've been here for over a year now and have been busy adapting to living here again, although it kind of feels as if we never left, and getting Ella used to be here as, even though she was born here, she was only three weeks old when we moved to Spain. Being the list-nerd that I am, I have made one with all the things and places I ... read more

We visited Winkworth Arboretum, Surrey in 2003. Our lovely memory brought us back there in 2016. We got up at 7 o’clock on 19 November, and took the train from Waterloo to Godalming. I remembered the town centre and the market hall where the market was held on Saturday morning. From the town centre we took the bus to Winkworth Arboretum. At the reception, we showed our membership cards. We were asked if we had been there before. We said, ‘Yes, but in 2003.’ The receptionist told us that there had been a lot of changes and extension of the course over the last few years. She showed us the map and recommended that we would do the 3.6km course, challenging route, so that we would see all the attractions. For being good at following the ... read more

Today we had planned a whistle stop visit to Bracknell to complete our shopping list, but there has been an accident nearby, so it would be too risky time wise. We have most of the items we want, so everything else will have to wait till next time. Not so bad really as we are nearly up to the maximum 100 kilos luggage hold baggage we have for our flight to Tenerife. After a lazy morning packing all our new purchases, we popped in to see George´s cousins Cliff and Mary and share some of holiday stories with them. We have also put some of our better photos together for them to look through on a slide show. It was nice to catch up with them, as we have not seen them since our holiday last ... read more

Visit to The Homewood with National Trust colleagues I joined a trip to The Homewood with National Trust colleagues on 2 September. I met up with seven of them at Waterloo station. We took the train to Esher and caught taxis to Claremont Landscape Garden. I remembered Racecourse at Sandown, which we walked past on the way to Claremont Landscape Garden a few years ago. Upon arrival at Claremont Landscape Garden, we were offered complimentary refreshments including a chocolate cake at the National Trust office there. We were told that The Homewood has been opened to the public since 2003 but shown by only the guided tours, and the booking appointments have been managed by the Claremont National Trust office. Having known that we were volunteers at 2 Willow Road, the staff kindly offered us free ... read more

We've really had the true British experience - English gardens, cows, sheep, rain showers and hot sun within the same hour, chocolate digestives, red phone boxes, castles, cruising the Thames by speed boat and of course a decent amount of beer! Our first day back in good ol' blighty was hot and sunny, similar to the weather we'd left behind in California. Unfortunately, time change had meant that we'd gone to bed late and had also been up for two hours in the night with Jake screaming the house down. This combination led to us sleeping in until gone midday. We needed it but it was a shame to miss out on such a lovely day, especially as my brother Gary had taken this day and the next off work. When we were all finally up ... read more

When we stayed at Theresa´s sisters before our holiday we did quite a bit of shopping, then left two hefty 30kg holdalls with them whilst we went away. This morning we had to merge the shopping into the luggage we had brought home from our holiday. Luckily we had not bought very much whilst we had been away. But we still have six 20kg bags to go into the hold for our flight home. Not a problem for us. After a quick stop at the supermarket in Camberley to pick up supplies for tea tonight, we headed off to Gatwick Airport. Our rooms at the Premier Inn at the North Terminal were not ready when we got there so we had a quick coffee at the Costa Coffee shop in the hotel before heading off to ... read more

We had a bit of a disturbed night last night as the couple in the room above us got in about 1am and made lots of noise for about an hour. When we checked out, we mentioned this and they credited the cost of the hotel room. They do offer a good night sleep guarantee. George walked back to the Enterprise office we had found last night and collected the hire car then came back to the hotel and collected Theresa and all the luggage. First port of call is a local supermarket to get some drinks for the journey and a couple of further items that we need for taking back to Tenerife. Next we visited George´s newly discovered Cousin Cliff and his wife Mary. George´s Dad and Cliff´s Dad fell out many years ago, ... read more

On Wednesday (22/07/2015) I visited the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey. It is a really nice collection of native British Wildlife in enclosures that are fantastic from the animals’ point of view. The collection has all Mustelid and Owl species that are found wild in the UK as well as 13 rodent species along with four deer species, two reptile species, shrews, foxes, buzzards and a few others. The general grounds are very nice too with a countryside setting and lots of nice greenery. The enclosures are very natural looking and seemed ideal for the inhabitants of them (apart from the owl and buzzard enclosures which were pretty average). This did however make viewing lots of the animals rather difficult and a lot of time is needed to watch and wait at the rodent enclosures to ... read more
