Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Waiting for my ride to go climb
Waiting for my ride to go climb
Here I am waiting outside to go climbing. This day, I was climbing with Dave and his dad. Both excellent climbers.
I love England! I love Sheffield, and considered it my 'home town' for a period of about 3 weeks. I love the friends that I've made (my home-boys), and the fact that there is England's best climbing only 30 minutes away in the Peak District. I have a slew of people to call on to go climbing during the day, and some of the best of Sheffield to call on at night for some great company and food. I must make one thing clear: I have been in Italy for a week, and for some reason, I have started this blog [View Full Entry]

This baby lamb was so cute! Sheep only have two nipples, so if they give birth to three or more babies then, all but two will survive. This one was adopted, and I fed it some milk out of a bottle wi... [more]
Well, it's been only 8 days since I landed in England, but it's seems like I've been traveling for ages. Let me give you a short recap, and then I'll begin by telling you about my travels, and my recent trip to the A & E (Accident and Emergency) where in America, we call it, "the ER." I started rock climbing in Thailand in Tonsai when some Kiwis took me rock climbing, and to cool off from the climb, we jumped into the ocean. I found it challenging and exciting. Once while climbing with my brother and Mark, Mathew climbed to [View Full Entry]

Having expected to be in Sheffield for 7 days it has actually been 14 and still counting. The tyres mended the next problem was apparently no electrics to fridge('tho gas runs it!). Unfortunately though I had my suspicions whilst at Kells there was no real time to do much and so I crossed over and hoped.I should have known better. The other major problem revolved around yet more delay from Dolmen. Having messed me up re covernote, the same day a letter arrived saying the documents would follow.Contact with Kells confirmed that they had had no such docs so I tried ringing Dolmen. The [View Full Entry]

Can you imagine riding one if these for your job?
Once again I was up early taking “Chet”, my German Shepherd Dog out for a walk before I headed off for the day on the bike. Today was the Bike Safe course that I’d booked onto quite a while since and something that I’d been looking forward to. The course was run by the South Yorkshire Police and was to commence at 8-am sharp from the SY police workshops at Chapletown near Sheffield and was to finish at 5-pm later that day at the operations centre at Catcliffe, Sheffield, the place where the Egg Run started from a couple of [View Full Entry]

Well I found the lights, negotiated the A75 and kipped down in one of the lay-bys.Bed is very comfy.3 hours later I made my way down to Westmorland Farms services(M6)(tremendous decor worth a visit)where I supped on coffee, donut and toasted T cake then travelled on to Cheshire making for Deva orchids.1 diversion later and circuitous routing I purchased several orchids and went on to Joan and Den's.Had a lovely long visit and they accompanied me to the M56 to make for Sheffield.Having given me a correct route I appear to have pocketed it and then thought Joan had kept it(appologies). Also [View Full Entry]

Here we go again! Since my last entry I have had still more hassle as tho' the van arrived ok I have found it much harder to handle than I expected.Time to departure date got steadily nearer and I waited and waited and waited for the insurance covernote to arrive. By 3/5 it hadn't.I then rang Dolmen(dublin) and they said it had been sent but (at my suggesion )they would send an e-mail copy. Great I thought now I can complete my errands('messages') in Ballymena and pick up the tax disc. When am I going to learn!! I continued to mooch [View Full Entry]
