I finished up a long day with an afternoon matinee of 'Spamalot' and I still have that silly song running through my head. The most fun I've had in a very long time. I miss Monty Python, don't you? No photos of the show, of course, but I should have snapped the Royal Theatre Bath - a lovely venue. It must be great to play there. Better part of the day was spent at the Roman Baths. Briefly, the Romans discovered the hot springs in the first century and built a temple to Minerva and a complex system of bathing rooms as was a part of their custom and society at the time. Discovered in the 18th century, the British have excavated and preserved the Roman structure through the centuries. After a few priviliged (and some ... read more

I devoted most of Thursday to Jane Austen. I visited the center at 25 Gay Street where her family lived for a short time after her father died in 1805 and shortly before they left the area for good. The guides are all dressed in Georgian period costumes and bear name tags like "Lizzie Bennett" or "Catherine Moreland," Very knowledgeable, they led us through the Austen family, parents and children, and their links to Bath. As you may know, there is only one portrait of Jane verified to have been drawn from life - an unfinished, unflattering attempt by her sister Cassandra when Jane was about 35. But the center has obtained a wax figure likeness of Jane that does a remarkable job of bringing her to life in about her mid twenties. The rooms are ... read more

Also while in Bath we took a tour of the Bath Abbey bell tower. This tour was fantastic. It was a slow day for them so Brendan and I were the only ones on the tour. The tour requires going up and down 212 steps in a spiral staircase. We went to the bell room and yes, we did get to ring some of the bells. We also went up to the belfry and also went up behind the clock. One really cool part was looking down through a small hole in the ceiling. There is also an incredible view from the tower roof. The last picture is a Pana rami view of a famous bath building called the crescent.... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745Today I started off by ducking down to the train station to get my tickets for tomorrow and Friday. On the way back from the station I spied the local catholic church and decided to pop in for a quick look. It was a church...I really gotta stop visiting them, it's just not working for me anymore. That being said I went to Bath Abbey after seeing the church, it does dominate the town center, I could hardly avoid it. It was another one of those churches which has graves under the floor, so I was walking around on the inscriptions. So many of these are worn completely down. All that money they paid to be remembered for an eternity, and their stones are as worn as if they were out in the open ... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745So this morning I was headed for Bath. But first I had to find my way to Paddington station. Thanks to my trusty train guide (Trish) I knew which trains I had to catch and made it there around 10am. There was a 10 o'clock train but there was no way I was making that (still had to buy tickets) So I found the ticket selling machine and purchased my ticket for Bath. No sooner did the ticket spit out but an announcement came over the PA that there were delays to all stations west of the city. I went to the info counter to find out "something" had jumped onto the tracks at Slough. I was told There may not be a train until after midday. So I went and got myself a ... read more

We arrived at the Lighthouse Guesthouse, Tytherington after a quite stressful journey- the road map and Sat Nav having conflicting views. Mum trusted the Road Map; Dad the Sat Nav. I was glad when we finally drove into a gravel courtyard with a Barn converted guesthouse surrounding it. We received a warm welcome and a quick tour around, even though it was getting on for half past eight. Our room was quite basic but clean and comfortable. The whole place had a peaceful vibe, herb teas and decaf coffee on the tea tray in the room. Reading the info booklet, we discovered that all the food was gluten and diary free. We hadn’t expected such a health inspired stay, but we were up for a new experience and as my Mum has Coeliac disease it was ... read more

Tightly packed in the car with mum, dad and sister, as well as a panting dog squished in-between us is not the best of fun, but there was a sense of excitement as we pretended to be sardines with so much luggage (we never travel lightly). Cornwall awaited us! En-route just a stones throw away from the M5 we stumbled across the village of Brent Knoll - Somerset, when trying too look for a place to walk our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Elmo, who had stored up more energy than the 'Duracell Bunny'. Although only a 5 minute drive from this major motorway, the village resembled a picture book setting with cosy cottages and a village shop- a time capsule to the past. After asking a jolly gentleman behind the counter we headed up a steep ... read more

I woke up without an alarm this morning and it was fabulous. Unfortunately, a girl in the room took the outlet near my bed so I wasn’t able to charge my stuff up. It was a rough night of sleep because people kept coming in at every hour of the night. Praying my hostels will get better! I took my time getting ready and grabbed a breakfast bar before I headed out for the day. I walked around the city and got to see most of the cool sights. I saw the Roman baths building, and partially in it. I was too cheap to pay 14 pounds to see a huge pool. I saw the Bath Abbey and walked around some of the cute little shopping streets. For lunch I ate a Cornish pasty, this time ... read more

Today was my last day with the Kents so we got to relax and spend the day together. We played my new favorite game, Settlers of Catan, so many times that I was actually able to win once. I had a great last day spending time with them. The next morning I woke up with enough time to play one last round of our favorite game before I had to catch a train. We drove to the train station in Reigate and waited about twenty minutes until the train to Reading came. I said my goodbyes and tried not to cry. Once I got on the train, I put my luggage up and sat down. Once I got to Reading, I had to get off the train, validate my rail pass, and then get on the ... read more

Today Laura and Joe and I bid farewell to our wonderful friends Ulf, Andrea, Anne, and Lars, and got on a plane for Bristol, UK. From there, we took a bus and a train into Bath. Our first day in Bath was pretty uneventful. We ate lunch, checked into our hotel, and pretty much collapsed for a couple of hours until we decided to go for a short walk around the town centre. Tomorrow is our first Mad Max tour, where we'll be visiting Stonehenge, Avebury stone circle, Lacock Village, and Castle Combe--Can't wait!... read more
