Despite the mercury still hovering around freezing at 10am, it was bright and sunny outside, so we went ahead with our plans for the day - a visit to Glastonbury and The Tor. Situated about 40klm south of Bristol, it makes for an easy day trip. Glastonbury is best known for The Glastonbury Festival, a music festival held annually since 1970. With an entrance fee of just £1 back then, Glastonbury 1970 was held the day after Jimi Hendrix died. Around 1500 people attended, and it was headlined by T Rex, stepping in for the Kinks who failed to show up. Tickets for last year's festival sold for £228 each ($385) and the five day 2017 festival, to be held in June, has already sold out. Glastonbury is reputed to have had the oldest Christian Church ... read more

As my flight prepared for landing at Heathrow Airport in London, the pilot's announcement rang through the cabin - 'one degree and foggy outside with visibility of 400 metres'. Welcome to winter in England! Long haul flights can be trying and I was feeling sleep deprived and headachy by the time I passed through immigration and made my way through the airport, following the signs to the bus station. My journey wasn't quite over, I had a two hour bus trip from London to Bristol yet. I was pleased to be able to change my booked ticket (an extra £8) for an earlier service once I'd found the National Express desk, and was able to hop on a coach leaving in five minutes. Bonus! How wonderful it was to see my daughter Petra, her husband Ben, ... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745Today was such a lovely day! We had a tour scheduled to visit Stonehenge, Bath, and some other “secret places” which ended-up being much more than we had imagined and this day was one of my all-time favorite vacation days ever. There is no way I can write about everything we saw or did but here's a rundown….We took a taxi to our meeting point for the day and as our taxi paused for a stoplight… my breath was taken away at the sight of Westminster Abby! Yay! I had no idea thetop of the Abby is gold. It was regal and everything I always thought it would be. We also saw the British military in their camo clothes and tall, black, furry hats. We met our tour group at the London Eye. As ... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745We left Cardiff and headed out on the M4 having successfully escaped the parking building with no damage. Target destination - Stonehenge which we achieved with only minor deviations from our course. Stonehenge and the museum are pretty jolly impressive and well worth a visit but I do have to do a rant about British traffic management.About 2 miles from Stonehenge, traffic goes from two lanes to one and grinds to a halt. Yes, I get that they have to preserve the heritage site but really? Can't they do better? But wait, then you get to the lovely new visitor centre and I cannot begin to describe the chaos of the cafe. A million visitors a year and they could sure learn a thing or two from Macdonalds. They have buses that take you ... read more

Tintern Abbey was the highlight of my day. This remains of a massive abbey, was as moving for me as any of the cathedrals I have visited. A back story for me was all the white pigeons. Some of you may know I raised pigeon as a kid. White does not last long in the will, as it is genetically recessive. Then as I read the various plaques around the site. The Cistercians arrived in Wales in 1131 and founded Tintern Abbey. It was from their custom of wearing undyed habits that the Cistercians became known as the White Monks’ Bath is a major city for tourism, with many attractions which are perfect for a weekend of sight-seeing. One day to go until our visit to Japan and either my suitcase has shrunk or (more likely) I am trying to fit the usual four seasons worth of clothing into one medium sized case! Let's hope I have an iron in the room at the other end as my clothes now look vacuum packed! So why are we going to Japan? Tricia (medical director) and I (executive clinical lead - community services) have been invited to lead a two day conference in Tokyo and visit numerous palliative centres in and around the area. How lucky are we? The first thing I should say is thank you to my colleagues who will be covering my absence and for doing it without any grumbling (well when I was in the room at least) - silk kimonos will ... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745Viewed the prehistoric setting of Stonehenge and later the Roman Baths in get this the city of Bath (makes sense huh). But Bath is also a Georgian city with extensive architecture built largely during the 17th and 18th century.Stonehenge is actually small, but it is remarkable that people without the wheel or equipment with which to hoist could have developed this place. These stones were moved over many miles before placement. ... read more

Decyzja zapadła by pojechać do Cheddar Gorge. Normalna cena to £19.85. W cenę biletu jest wliczony przejazd autobusem ... read more

I only have two pictures of Stonehenge because my camera was set to only expose when steady. Between the wind and my own shaking body, it took me a half hour to get these to photos! It does make you wonder how the early Britons managed to survive on these plains. After a much needed tea break, we took off for Lacock village which looks like something out of central casting. Several of the homes in this village of 200 people have been used in 'Pride and Prejudice' (1995),' Cranford', the earlier Harry Potter films and even the upcoming season of 'Downton Abbey.' We walked through this village like usurpers afraid to make a noise. Didn't see many locals as the day was cold and dreary, but met an intriguing fellow at the local artisan studio ... read more

I finally got an appointment at the Thermae Spa for a massage and a chance to bob around in their version of the Roman Baths. This was a cold, but thankfully, dry day. My good old #1 bus got me to within a couple blocks of the spa - only which blocks? Sunday mornings in Bath are pretty quite. I wandered around the same neighborhood nearly all by myself for twenty minutes ("Alone, I'm all alone. . ." I can't get Spamalot out of my head) until I stumbled on the nondescript square that housed the spa. I really expected them to give me a prize for finding the place, instead I got a rubber bracelet that was to be my only form of identification while at the spa. The first thing you lose are your ... read more
