6th January 2018 Moved to Norwich today. Drove via Wells at the Beach. It's a very cute seaside town. Went for a walk along the marina thing to the beach. Freezing! Nearly died of hypothermia. Walked back quicker than a Londoner lol. 7th January 2018 Went to Eaton Park for breakfast. Very nice walking around. I like the symmetry and clean lines. 20th January 2018 St Peter Mancroft Church Norwich castle - now a museum Norwich cathedral 28th January 2018 Went to Horesey Beach. Saw seals. Very cute. Lovely day. Went to Cromer. Ate fish and chips from place with massive line. Turns out the shop with no line was actually Michelin star restaurant. Wonder if it tastes better? 4th February 2018 Went to Lowestoft. Most easterly point in England. Was not impressive. Went to Gorleston. ... read more

Up and packed reasonably early this morning. We wanted to get to Holkham Hall so that we could see the house and gardens and possibly get to York in time for evensong at 4.00pm. A big ask given that it was about 3 and a half hours from Holkam to York. Weather was quite pleasant, although cool. We set off and arrived at Holkham about 11am. Had morning tea ( and then a chat with Clare and Katrina which was not planned, but good!) and went to explore the walled garden, as the house did not open until noon. It was a bit of a walk across to the walled garden, but what a surprise! It was huge!!! The garden itself had many "rooms" and within those rooms, lots of hothouses and beds, and flower gardens, ... read more

After breakfast and packing up we moved on from Cambridge. Grantchester (of the TV show on the ABC) was just a couple of kilometres away, so we stopped in at the village before getting on the highway to go just past Norwich to our destination for the next couple of nights at Crostwick. The village was not the village of the series, but the church was. We wandered around it for a little while. It was quiet and old, and the graveyard seemed to be very haphazard. Leaving Grantchester, we next aimed for Ely. We wanted to see the cathedral there. It is very old- Norman in its earliest parts - and is not such a decorated cathedral as the gothic ones. It has a wooden ceiling- which is beautifully painted- and at the centre an ... read more

Tomorrow, the lovely Gill and I set off for our adventure - travelling to Bangkok and exploring Cambodia. I still need to pack, as I love a last minute job, but wanted to set up a way to stay in touch with friends and family. If you want to see what we are up to, we will try to blog at least every 2 days. Dawn x... read more

Well here we are - our last day in Norfolk. Our last visit to a stately home. We arrived in Sandringham and I did wonder why I had chosen to stay here. It should not be our cup of tea. Being Welsh we have a what some would term a warped view on our royal family. Wales has always been downtrodden by English Kings. Castles were built to overpower us. We would never like royalty with their privileged lifestyles paid for by taxpayers like us. They live in some kind of cloistered environment coming out now and again to survey the world they inhabit. Wales is not even on the British flag. So why on earth are we here. It is only going to make us dislike the rich life the Royals lead at the expense ... read more

What a lovely morning. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, farmers are filling the lanes with tractors and harvesters. What could be better? It is certainly a great day to visit the city of Norwich. Breakfast is a delight with fresh eggs, cereal, toast, marmalade, tea and coffee. What a superb start to the day. We negotiate the agricultural machines through country lanes before getting on to a more direct road to Norwich. It is Monday, sunny, and summer. Everyone should be at the beach. Not today. Everyone is shopping. We get a great car park in a large shopping centre and then head off on a mission. One team member needs a haircut. We are used to hairdressers in large shopping centres. Not at this one. A helpful young man at the information ... read more

Plan for today. Enjoy a delightful breakfast. Collect our washing and drive to a laundromat in King’s Lynn. Discover the Norfolk beaches. Finish the day with a Sunday roast at the pub. What a grand day out. Unfortunately reality kicks in. We wake to the sound of rain drops. It could still be a day at the beach. The locals do it. But first we do enjoy a delightful breakfast. Not quite the full English but certainly some aspects of it, especially the farm fresh eggs that the hosts’ hens have just laid. The rain is not heavy but might interrupt the day’s activities, we’ll see. We leave our little house and drive to King’s Lynn and the laundromat that we have identified as the perfect location for the travellers’ wash. We are confronted by a ... read more

It is time to leave Suffolk and head back into Norfolk and our penultimate destination. Near to Kings Lynn we are heading for a picture perfect postcard stately home Oxborough Hall. I have been before so this is not a first time visit however it was so long ago that I can barely remember much about it. 1985 or thereabouts we drove with the kids to the Hall. I remember the road up to it. I can remember the moat around it and I remember going into the shop and paying around £20 (a lot of money in those days) to buy a pencil and ink drawing of the hall to hand on our cottage wall. Apart from that I remember very little . Sally Sat Nag is behaving herself. The new model has lot of ... read more

Day 3 - Today felt a little bit like being in Nafpaktos and trying to make a connection between a number of unrelated facts. What is the connection between yellow and green canaries , the cook Delia Smith and Edith Cavell? The answer - Norwich . Norwich City Football club is called the Canaries and they play in yellow and Green. Delia is their chairman and Edith Cavell was born here. I came to Norwich in the mid 70's. We had the mad idea of going to watch Liverpool FC playing Norwich. We often went to both home and away matches in the late 1970's. The distance didnt matter . It could be Manchester or Birmingham or equally Norwich. Sadly though we only drove a mini which was notoriously slow and we didnt get to the ... read more
